I honestly have nothing against WoW, I am pretty open and neutral. I realize WoW is the most popular and a majority would be playing it. But to those who dislike WoW. What are you playing (MMO or not) and why?
I am honestly just curious to see what games you play and why you play them. (Try to give a good explanation as to why you play/like it.)
Once again. I am not a WoW fan boy, it's honestly a serious question I have.

I used to play Guild Wars till all my friends left and then it sadly got boring.... This is mostly because it was free. 2) It was more casual and no grinding (I hate grinding of almost any kind. Can stand quest grinding for awhile but only for so long). 3) It focused more on skill rather than gear. I loved it and I still occasionly log in to check on things and maybe play a little pvp. Right now I play LOTRO. This is because 1) It's free (Ok not really but I bought the lifetime from the very start and now the time for $200 has basically passed so I really only have to buy expansion packs. Makes it pretty much free to me. 2) It's casual 3) It follows LOTR lore like crazy. 4) I basically just want to chill and see what middle-earth looks like. I'm looking for a 2nd MMO to play alongside LOTR. I've tried a few... even trying to try WoW again and I just can't stand WoW.... I think this is mainly because I played Warcraft:orcs and heroes. Warcraft 2: Tides of darkness and Warcraft 2 expansion pack: Beyond the dark portal and even Warcraft 3 with the expansion pack. Warcraft 3 was dissapointing in my opinion. They lowered a lot of the strategic depth I felt and made maps seem small. The story was not too bad so I was pleased there. The frozen throne just seemed like something made to make WoW more popular or something. So add this all together and sadly the world developers made many things in WoW just far too small. I remember battling in Theromore and it was huge and expansive in the WC3 and just a tiny fort in WoW. Now I realize things get scaled down in MMO's but still.. it felt too small. Plus I felt they just added things to add things. Sort of sad and dissapointing. I can stand the game somewhat but after awhile it's really grindy and boring. I'm in the AoC early start... all patched and ready to go... hoping my computer will be able to handle it a bit better this time... so hopes are up.... else I may look into EQ2 or Vanguard.... would almost revisit EQ1 but my account is so old and gone I can't remember it. |

I am currently no longer playing true mmorpg games, I can go as far as saying that I now honestly Hate all true mmorpg games. I play Phantasy star universe, and Hellgate london, both online action games, Very casual and simple, easy (you can max out in each in about 30 days) casual play. I also play Unreal tournament 3, I like the PvP in UT3, I love the simple non elitist feel of PSU, where gear and overall popularity or guilds don't mean anything. Hellgate I play because it is free, If I had too choose 1 game to stick with 1 online game that is, I would pick Monster hunter, Because it is a very casual online adventure game, that really gives you that feel of Guild wars or Phantasy star but it was free 2 play. (Cant wait for MH3 on Wii) |

I'm playing Vanguard. Played The Witcher for a while. Great game in many respects, but the fight system is really repetitive, boring, and too simple. Was planning to get Mass Effect (PC). Maybe it was a bad idea, because its a kind of egoshooter. Anyway the copy protection they are planning for it is absurd - I'm not going to support that. Hopefully they dont get a copy protection like that for Dragon Age, too. Never ever tried WoW. I was thinking about it in the beginning, but then a friend made me start Lineage 2. And in the end, WoW is just another Starcraft or Diablo, and I never understood what people see in those games either.

After playing DAOC for a few years, and then moving on to City of Heroes and Final Fantasy XI, I've decided that I don't like the way current MMOs are basically playing follow the leader with their design. They incorporate grind elements to keep people playing rather than creating a fun game that makes people want to play it more. Also games that make you pay a monthly fee and then make you pay for expansions on top of that really piss me off. I'm waiting for an MMO to truely shake up the marketplace with a different...something. In the meantime, I will be playing Age of Conan, which hopefully seems to be a step in the right direction. I'll find out in a couple of days... Other than that, I will stick with free online games, the only ones that seem worth the money I spend on them (Guild Wars, Titan Quest, Hellgate, Diablo II and other such games). |

Originally posted by tvalentine Im hoping that some day they make an mmorpg without levels or very Monster hunterish, Casual, no real grind, and no real way to hack it because all rare or valuable items are Bind on pickup, and you play online with people. And the off topic forums are fun to go to. |

I don't exactly dislike World of Warcraft. Its a well done game and I enjoy the Warcraft universe. However I could never bring myself to like the class choices in the game and how they were setup. That was THE major turn off for me with the game. If don't like what I"m playing as then there is no reason to continue playing. Ever now and then I reinstall the game but then I have to force myself to remember why I quit playing in the first place. I want to play the game since I enjoyed the world but didn't have fun due to what I was playing as and I recall trying all of the classes and race combinations. Nothing seemed to click. Curently I'm playing Vanguard: Saga of Heroes again and while I'm enjoying myself I don't really have the time I want in order to really play the game so I might end up leaving once my current subscription is up sometime this month. I already canceled it just in case I forget the date. The game has come a long way I feel and I like playing as the Vulmane but it too suffers from the character class issues I had with World of Warcraft. So far the Dread Knight and Druid classes are the ones I like the most. The only other game, and I just might go back to it soon, that really grabbed me and didn't let for a while was Dark Age of Camelot. I stayed with that game long enough to reach the max level and was able to start working on my champion levels. I was a Warden and I found that class to be the best setup for what I was looking for. Melee, buffing, healing, and defense either for myself or an entire group. I felt good about playing that class and haven't really gotten that feeling from any other in a long time. The setting for all the realms were great. It was clearly fantasy but was unique since it had a real world connection to it. Also RvR was great. I like PvP but with a purpose and structure. I just wish it looked better and was given more attention by EA Mythic. However with Warhammer coming out i wouldn't be surprised if they simply let it died or canceled it. EA is has track record of doing that with mmorpgs. I would play Everquest 1 again (as it was my first mmorpg and I did have fun during it and I'm more open to grouping as I've gotten older over the years) if I had a guarantee I'd have plenty of people to group with and to talk with at the lower to mid levels. However that isn't possible since the game is so damn top heavy and the developers and publisher don't seem care at all about bringing in new players or returning players starting with nothing and how their expereinces will be. |
