General Discussion

There is currently a wonderful discussion going on at my favorite blog, Pharyngula, concerning [THIS] post.  It refers back to [THIS] article from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.  Hey, feel free to even contribute to the poll that is currently set up there. 

Anyway, do you feel that this is blatantly racist? Harmless fun? Something else?

It is, or should be (or wait, wouldn't it be nice if it wasn't?), common knowledge that the term "monkey" has been used as a racial slur toward African Americans (and other races in Asia and the South Pacific).  So, please, don't pretend that it doesn't exist.  

I guess the most surprising part to all of this is the current results of the poll.  If it had not come to the attention of a popular blog, I dare say that the majority of the participants would have no problem with the t-shirts.

Sadly, I think this country has a long way to go before we eliminate (err, minimize) racism.   It is a shame that such ignorance is still alive today in our country.  I imagine it could, and probably will, cost Obama the presidency.  If it contributes, even in the slightest degree, that will be a shame for our country to carry for decades.

Given my remarks, I think you know where I stand on the poll in question.  Let's hear it.

I think it's just plain stupid.  I mean, really, defending the choice to use a monkey as saying Obama looks like the monkey?  I don't like Obama, but come on...

Nothing racist about it.

But the reactions that it is racist is another good reason to NOT vote for Obama.

Now Tom Blumer has discovered images of Wright’s radical newsmagazine Trumpet—and look who was featured on the cover of that magazine at least three times: BizzyBlog - Attention Stanley Kurtz, Re Obama, Wright, Trumpet: I’ve Got You Covered.

Here’s one of the images, featuring pictures of Barack Obama, Rev. Wright — and Louis Farrakhan. Isn’t that cozy?

And if you think Barack Obama didn’t know he was featured on this cover, I have a bridge in Brooklyn I’d like to sell you.

Wow. How hypocritical. It's racist when it's against Obama. But it's funny when done against Bush?

It's funny, even as I typed up the original post I knew that someone would run in and comment on Bush being called a monkey.  It was too obvious. 

Can you say that it is racist when used against Bush? Of course not, because white people have not had that slur used against them for hundreds of years.  Is it an attempt to insult one person? Yeah, it is.  Not really a good attempt, and not really funny, but that is what it is. 

Now, take a black man who currently has racist remarks made against him and whose campaigners run into racism on a daily basis, and call him a monkey.  You've got hundreds of years of oppression staring you in the face and shaking its head no.  It isn't okay.  There is a difference.  If you must, then find something else.  If you can't see it, it's not because you're color blind and above all of that. 

Stop making excuses for racism.  It's not funny anymore.
