"We''re not making a game for Trekkies" Daron Stinnett, Perpetual Entertainment

The developers are on record as saying this will be a P2P game but have not ruled anything out.  For arguments sake, let's say DFO goes self publishing with a F2P/mini-mall business model, will you play?

Discuss.

For that to work you need a massive amount of items and variety.

I personally don't think DF can work as P2P at this point anymore. Maybe if it's like $9 month or something and is actually half way decent to play.

They stated there will be no free to play. No point in speculations. You have to pay monthly subscription fees.

15 replies to Will you pre-order and only three replies on this topic.  Honestly, I expected more from this crowd on this topic.

Only if, for arguments sake, Darkfall turns out to be a 60 foot tall land walking death-squid with tentacles made of solid gold!

And not just any gold! It has to be Swiss-speaking Welsh gold!

Why the **** would Darkfall be free-to-play?

It wouldn't and with the "gear is just gear" philosophy of this game it would have the worst Item Mall in the history of micro transaction games. It might work on the limited subscription model (ie, only letting paying customers get half of the content like Runescape does) but the Item Mall system just wouldn't work, period. I think however that DF will be a normal subscription based game like it's western counterparts so this whole argument is pointless to me.

I don't believe it would work with an item mall because of the fact that there are most levels.  Most item malls sell things that help people gain experience quicker, but that would not be possible in Darkfall because there is no experience to gain.  Another thing would be that all of the best items are crafted, so they could not sell "uber gear" in the item mall, since people could just make them.

I guess they could sell money & less powerful items, but I doubt they would go with this approach.

Tasos never mentioned self publishing  and he talked most of the time about free to play business model. He wrote pages full about how well mini-mall business will run.

He is not to trust when he mention Pay to Play. Either he is joking  or he dunno what subscriptions means because well he is greek  you know  greeks  dunno what year currently is on  and i doubt he know the concept of months and days. Where do greek lives ? have they buildings and that like ?

He said he will publish that  personally and run  a mall  in Athens. You have to fly there to buy you a copy. You have to contact him before and appoint him for that tho so he has enough time to setup hawkers tray. Then this will work Tasos said, pointing to his mini-mall.

Glad i could answer some serious questions...

Cash shops can destroy games too much.  It gives unfair advantages to people who do not pay.  So many games on the market are "free to play" but, as you play more, you find that you will be paying more and more money.  In the end, many players wind up paying more than an actualy subscription.
