From what I've seen these two are the only web-based games that resemble in any way true MMORPGs (WoW,DAOC,EQ etc). All the others seem to be text-based strategy games and stat calculators falsely using the 'MMO' tag to attract players. The question is, what do you think is a better platform for web-based MMOs to run on... Java like Runescape or PHP/AJAX like Eternum?

I've never heard of eternum but judging by its 2d screen shots I'd would say java, but I wont because java is terrible runescape lags and stutters and can only achieve a couple of frames per second, independant of your rig. |

I think AJAX is a brilliant platform for online games. There's more to a game that graphics and Eternum's gameplay is a lot faster and less frustrating than Runescapes. Having said that Runescape isn't exactly the best game ever and I'm sure someone could implement a more fun game using Java if they really tried. |

Personally I would take detailed, 2d graphics over Runescape's 3d graphics. The field of vision is so small in Runescape you can barely see more than three feet in front of you... it's impressive for a java applet but I don't think the technology is there yet for decent graphics engines in web-based games. Playability is the key here.

To all the people who insult runescapes graphics I say: Have you played it recently since the graphical updates or are you judging it by the old engine? IMHO Runescape is rivalling WoW or even some of the modern MMOs such as Age of Conan in terms of graphics these days. === It takes a real man to learn the truth... it takes the truth to learn a real man. |

Writing a MMO in Java is like chaining your chariot to a 1000 kilo boulder in a chariot race. There are far better computer languages for games than Java. |

Quote of the week, if not the year. The day that a browser game looks as good as one of the best looking MMORPGs out at the market is a long long way from becoming reality. |

Now that google have released chrome, I'd be interesting to see if we do see a surge of decent browser games such as Eternum. Javascript running on a virtual machine rather than being clumsily interpretid should makes these sort of games run lightning fast ;) |

Kinda wrong. With JAVA you only lose 5-15% of system resouces for identical code. Which is more than made up for by being OO from the ground up instead of top down. With the fact that it is just all around easier to program in it means that you can finish your game earlier or decided to efficenitize past the origingal 10% lost. Eventually Java will end up being just as efficent than C(whatever) compiliers in part to do SUN+Friends new implementations and that eventually every computer will have a few processor cores While C(whatever) compiler developers have to navigate around the moster that they've developed so that every case no matter how small is handled. The real reason why Java loses out is because since Oak up until a few years ago SUN has almost completely ignored the game developement market and that market ignored them for that reason. So there aren't nifty tools out there like there is for C(whatever) so most the stuff you're going to used is going to be looking at stuff from a bussiness perspective. Which is great for servers, bandwidth allocation, machine clustering, all data, and deployment. But pretty bad for Graphics unless you build a system for yourself.
Also the reason why Runescapes graphics suck is because it's a browser you really can't afford to put lots pictures/textures and animations in that thing without wasting a lot of bandwidth/money on your part. Wurmonlines graphics aren't the best because only two people programmed it. |

Not a joke... are you sure you've seen the latest graphical updates to RS and aren't just thinking of the old classic gfx? Runescapes graphics are now detailed and atmospheric, more realistic than WoW's cartooniness and as dark and moody as the art direction in AoC, possibly WAR too although that looks like it may be taking some of WoW's cartoony styling. === It takes a real man to learn the truth... it takes the truth to learn a real man. |

OMG! Dude seriously! Have you seen AoC or WoW? At all? You must be in serious need for glasses or something because even with the new and improved graphics, runescape is one of the worst games visualy wise, dont get me wrong i loved it for a long time because of its gameplay but the graphics are just pathetic and to compare them to AoC is like saying........well there is no comparison because thats just ridiculus |

I'd say that www.nodiatis.com is better than both in their current states. |

No I'm not some blind fanboy... I have played AoC, WoW and LOTR at length as well as runescape so I am in a position to compare them graphically. AoC and LOTR both have really great and detailed graphics, but runescape at maximum settings still blows me away and it's at least on par with them. === It takes a real man to learn the truth... it takes the truth to learn a real man. |
