Hello!

I'm a political studies major at Bard College, and I'm doing a small research paper on the potential of Second Life as a space for political dialogue and deliberation. I'm looking for volunteers to participate in a short online discussion on Wednesday, May 14th, at 9:00 PM Eastern Time (GMT - 05:00).

The idea is not to create a debate or argument with clear sides, but rather to exchange ideas in an open nature, in the hopes of becoming better informed about different perspectives. My goal is to test Second Life's ability to house meaningful discussion about political issues. The general topic of the discussion will be affirmative action; what role does it have in public policy? Should institutions be color-blind? Where do supporters and opponents of affirmative action find common ground?

The meeting will take place in Second Life on "Democracy Island," a virtual deliberation space created in 2006. A simple search within Second Life for "Democracy Island" will allow you to teleport there. The discussion will last an hour and a half at most, and of course you are free to leave at any time.

The discussion itself will be recorded for my research, but anyone wishing to keep their screenname out of the finished paper may do so. If you plan to attend, all you have to do is email me, and I'll keep you informed of any developments or change of plans. Please use an email that you will check often.

If you would like to attend but have a scheduling conflict, please let me know and we'll see if we can arrange a different time.

My email address is: derekvg@gmail.com

You can also reach me via my SL name, Derek Virtanen.

Thanks! And I hope to see you there.
