"We''re not making a game for Trekkies" Daron Stinnett, Perpetual Entertainment |
I'll be the first to admit, I have my doubts about DFO. Last night, myself and some buddies at our weekly D&D game started talking about DFO and D&L. We actually came up with what I would a logical explanation as to why this game is taking so long. Remember D&L. That game took way to long to get to market. After everything was said and done, and court cases were heard, we found out that D&L coded mostly by college students on Reunion Island as part of class projects for gaming degrees. What is to say that the exact same thing isn't going on with DFO. DFO is horribly slow with any updates. College finals have been going on. That could explain why there was no update last week. I've been following this game forever and we get almost zero news over the summer. I would contend that DFO is a local college as their junior developers and classes are usually just six months or seven months out of the year. This also explains why we never, ever hear anything on the actually developers of the game. They are mostly college students working for grades instead of being paid by Aventure. This also explains how they can stay in development for so long with what appears to be goverment subsidies as their source of income to stay afloat. That is my theory. I'm sticking to it. That is all.

Want Darkfall now! |
I can only hope you are wrong. When D&L were in development i played SWG, so i missed the whole hype. But D&L did atleast become a released MMO. And i have no idea what was supposed to be so amazing with D&L? It sounds juat as Vanguard. So its hard for me to se anything in common between DF and D&L. We should think about all good MMOs instead, and hope for the best : ) |

Originally posted by ShanniaI have the same concerns you have just stated. I was once a D&L Fanboi. I lived in the hype and swallowed every piece of garbage they threw at us. I was naive then and that experience taught me one thing... until you play the game yourself you know NOTHING. All these people who sit there and say ANY statement as if it were a fact (whether troll or fanboi) really is talkign out of his/her arse. The trolls and fanbois are the EXACT same... The thing is, seeing this with Darkfall is like a creepy deja vu. Everythign i happening JUST like it did with D&L. The rabid fanbois swearing the game was going to put all the other games to shame. The fanbois making up excuse after excuse for devs. even the SAME EXACT EXCUSES. There too busy makign the best game the world has seen to make a journal, they keep pushing it back to make it great the day it comes out. Id rather wait 10 years to play DF then play any other game.... SAME EXACT EXCUSES to the T. Then, D&L released, and let me tell you, for all the AOC bashing I do, I'd MUCH rather play AOC the D&L. Now I have already seen the fanboi defense to this. DF is not D&L blah blah blah we all know its not, but after seeing what I saw there I can safely say that NOONE HERE KNOWS ANYTHING> The trolls, the fanbois, there one in the same, just guessing and assuming. I love the concept behind DF, but the similarity between DF and D&L is just TOO close not to take notice. I have a really hard time believing DF will be what it's bragging it will be. I HOPE it does, but common sense tells me something is REALLY wrong here |

I'm talking about super small development teams taking long to deliver HUGE projects that are actually bigger than games currently on the market today. Let's think about it a second. They say DFO will take 8 real life hours to cross. Unless you go to EVEOnline, none of today's AAA MMORPGs take 8 hours to cross. You would need a army of developers to this. Where else to get an army of developers to do this than college univerisities where people need INTERNSHIPS to graduate with their degree programs. It is free labor for Aveturine in a place where cost of living is already cheap. This slows down the development cycle but greatly expands the work force for the game and lessens the money strains in paying for labor.

You know what's funny? I was going to make a post just like this comparing D&L and DF last night but I figured what's the point... The similarities are great. D&L actually released more info and media though and had people actually playing it. Ha |

If this is what they are doing -- it is a TERRIBLE way to be developing.... and you can forget about ever seeing anything like what they promise. JR programmers building a MMORPG (of any kind) is not going to happen. Let alone one with the feature set of DF. |

Originally posted by Catizone DFO is suppose to be what D&L promised to be. D&L really screwed themselves over in the way they handled customer billings and such. That could have been such a good game, but the fanbase just couldn't trust Farlan Entertainment. I hope DFO builds better trust with the community. I don't know if we'll ever see it released, but here is hoping.
