ok a new tip that worked.

Go into the aoc install directory

delete shader.cache.temp, local and any other shader files you see their might be 3 of them.

Now run simpleconfig and make sure you are running in windowed mode.

Do NOT run the regular AoC startup this will redownload the shader files.

Look for the AgeOfConan.exe file.  Run this file.  This will start up AoC without the patcher.  For me this improved performance hugely and it also made the initial loading screen much faster.

that really worked for me too.

at start i only had long loading times but when i tried all the otehr tips from forums and official i started crashing, game sctarted currupting drivers...

now after reisntalling drivers i thought i will give this a try and it really works, guess the shaders cahce taht gets downloaded is the big problem. i am not even getting much stuttering when i enter new areas now (which they told us was due to compiling shaders), intial start of game has speed up by insane amount...

now i think i even might keep my preorder if things keep running like this in the next days.

I added the cache deletion tip into the first page of tips.  It's number 7 and it is working really well.  I don't even crash when I exit the game at least sometimes I done.

the only thing iu find strange is taht i don't even get stalls when getting to new areas so its not really the compiling of shaders thats causing them (without shaders.cache files there should be no precompleid shaders), i guess its more a problem that there are shaders compiled for wrong settings in that file than having no compiled shaders.

also found out it i don't get stalls even with shaders set to 3.0.

glad to hear it is working out for you.  It is really amazing how much better it runs.  I think it was copying the downloaded cache to local and then trying to build from there.  Problem is I think something in the cache is bad and basically screws up everything.  I've been timing zoning and I don't think zoning ever takes more then 10 seconds and as you say the stalling problem is hugely reduced now.

put game in windowed mode....still nothing.....

I have posted this problem about 6 times on the official forums and a couple of times here at mmorpg.com (where I won the beta key) also emailed tech@ageofconan.com twice and nothing....I have seen others with this problem no answers posted......
please help.....My drivers are up to date....every other game I have runs fine.....

amd +3500 2gigs ram 256mb x850xt

I know its an old system but low settings should be doable..it meets minimum....
I'm having the exact same problem - my flashes are black, not blue. I've searched far and wide for a solution for this, tried running windows - with all manner of resolutions. I'm not able to see any start up graphics/introductions and i can click the mouse till it reaches what i assume is the login screen. This then loads the nice snowy mountains in the background with some floating tree's and some spazzy blue expanding thing, i will post a picture - this is utterly unplayable.

I'm using the same graphics card as you are, Ati Radeon XT 850X 256mb - starting to wonder whether this is a graphics card issue.

AoC support forums are utterly useless as i can't log into them even after registering.

this here is what it all looks like after clicking past the black line crap.

Very Frustrating.

Game Mechanics - Setting Resources

"this is a portion of the guide that may continually become outdated and require change. So, take from it what works for you, and notify me if something changes so I can update it"

"Currently a work in progress"

Video Options

Default Resolution: The higher the resolution, the more performance hit you will encounter. Using windowed mode, and lowering your resolution slightly will improve performance greatly.

From my own numbers, decreasing resolution to "half" of your normal value will increase your FPS by 20 to 25 frames.

Also, for those of you using dual view versus horizontal span for your system video cards, there is another adverse hit for dual view users. I've seen a 5 to 10 FPS positive difference using horizontal span versus dual view. This really only applies to those of you with 2 monitors. I'm pretty certain this has to do with the drawing mechanism in place between monitors.

Overall Quality

If you click on Low, Medium, or High, it will completely erase any custom settings you make. Therefore, you should set one of these to start with before making custom changes.

If you are on a low-end system or medium-system, start with Low and work your way up through the custom settings.

If you are on a very high end system, go with Medium and work your way up through the custom settings.

High should only be used if your system can truly handle it. You'll know right away when you enter the game and find that you are showing 5 FPS, then you will want to change this. If you set this to high and go in and find yourself averaging 20 FPS, you are doing "GOOD" but you may want to lower via custom and increase your FPS to 35 FPS which is a very playable state.

Anti-Alias Quality (Recommended none or 2x)

Controls the jagged appearance around objects. You can set this to none, 2x, or 4x. The higher the setting the better visually the game will appear, but you will be hit with 5 to 7 FPS decrease per setting. This may differ on your system.

View Ranges (recommended: 2000m)

Controls how far you can view in the game. If you increase this greatly, it will decrease performance. This is something you will have to tailor for yourself. I personally think 2000 m is a good start. Work your way downwards/upwards depending.
