So I went out to get the AoC preorder, expecting only to pay 5$. Instead I paid 10$ I was a little surprised that it cost that much. Preorders are usually 5$. Then I read the back panel. If you expect to play in the pre-release, you have to pay another 5$. So, *if* you download three days earlier, you will have paid 15$ for a preorder... I realise you dont have to pay the preview if you dont want to... its just kinda strange theyd charge for the client too. Why? Couple this nonsense of the older client for open beta and it makes you wonder if the decision makers at Funcom have rocks in their heads... or dollar signs for irises... probly the latter. |

The 5 dollars is suposta cover the cost of the 16+ gig download. You get 10 days free play so in reality you dont actually lose any money seeing as you get a 40 day free trial before your billed instead of 30.

Originally posted by kitsunegirl Hey! You can pre order from many places without putting anything down. Many places have a default minimum and that has nothing to do with Funcom or anyone at Funcom it is a decision of the distributor. The 5$ is for the 3 day headstart yes, but it is also for 10 days of game time. When it is 15$ a month to play and 10 days = 1/3 of a month and 5$ = 1/3 of 15$ it makes more sense. Also the head start is completely optional. You can instead just play once you get the box! Hope this clears some things up!!! |

They should have noted that on the box, not the card inside the box. >.> Ill likely pay the extra 5 so that I can get the extra 10 days. "free" time is always good. :) |

Yep.. this isn't really a "hardup for money" situation. This is them covering server costs. However, I preordered at Gamestop.com and I have yet to pay anything except the $5 for early access which is game time I would have had to buy anyways, so I'm not losing anything at all. In reality, you're not losing anything. The money you put down for the game goes towards the game purchase, and you can always cancel and get your money back. The early access charge gives you 10 days of free time, which is what $5 will get you for most any MMORPG. |

I already admitted I missed the part on the card, no need to keep explaining it to me. :P lol As for Gamestop... I would have gotten it from them, but they only ordered enough for those that had reserved it. So I went to Bestbuy. |

Retired at 45, are you? |
i typed a small blurb about companies doing this type of viral marketing a while ago, sucking in money from seemingly nowhere, using the hype to silently pull your cash from your wallet while your still smiling with that vacant, glassed over look in your eyes. one thing that players need to keep in mind, no matter what devs say during an interview, no matter what they say about "not letting their bosses make a party line" they do tow it, and happily, as it pays the bills at home, gives them their bonuses, etc. companies are brutal, they will market in any way shape or form to get the last dollar from your wallet, that is unless you stop and think for a moment and dont worry about being the first rabid fan into a money pit. sadly until folks quit being mindless (and hopping like lemmings onto the next big thing), companies like funcom will continue to market this way and take your money, you have a choice, its not a matter as some put it of players being to cheap to spend the cash, those folks are clueless and set in their ways, to those that can spend how they want the point is making the companies start doing and marketing the way you want them to, that takes loss of revenue, not words, words do absolutely didly squat. they need to lose cash before they will start listening. | |
