Call me spoiled by MXO's combat *rofl ill get flamed for that one im sure* but does this game seriously think its innovating something when npcs have little shields that just mimic the last place you hit? Maybe im just not completly understanding this system, which I really want to say is the right answer, but really its just going to be spam skills that are opposite side directions and you will blow through any npc. So basically, is this more than spam left forward right and calling it innovative to have to watch npcs shift thier armor? I dont mean to make fanboy's angry or anything, but I seriously want to know because to me the combat system is the make or break deal, and so far its def losing me. |

My personal impression from my experiences in the pvp weekend was that it wasn't that great. Not as different as it was advertised and not as exciting as i was hoping. But there were also many people that did like it, and thought it was the exact opposite of how I felt. So I think its entirely dependent on the individual, everyone seems to get something different out of it, so you should try it and not just listen to someone elses review. Ideally, a free trial that doesn't involve you putting down any cash. |

The combat moves on to 5 directions later in the game and combos get more advanced as you level spanning multiple directions. The shields are for regular melee strikes where later in the game you would be using combos, or spellweaving, or spells, etc. to fight. Direction of attack matters as well. It's also twitch based so if you swing your sword and are out of range it doesn't hit them. It's not like a normal MMO where you queue attack then run around out of range and do nothing, but go in range and auto attack kicks in. This is a very cool fighting system in my opinion, but the casters are a bit too much like other MMOs for now, but with Spellweaving I think they will be really cool. |

Originally posted by jackman1118 you probably will. The combat system isn't bad. But it is bad when compared to what it was hyped up to be. It gets the job done and is just as fun as any other MMO you have probably played, but you arent going to find anything new with it. It may "look" different with how it is setup, but it is the same structure as many other MMOs and is not going to bring anything really different to your experience in combat. |

btw I have been playing it, I got to level 7 as a conqeror, 6 rogue 6 necro 6 demo. I was just wondering whether it did get more complicated or not. Supposedly It does, so I will stick it out and level to 13 with the beta to see if I can fall in love with it. |

Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic |
it might not be innovative or anything but Its more fun than auto-attack imo. |

It is a lot more involved than any MMO out there, and combined with what I personally believe to be excellent combat animations make the whole combat part of AoC a delight. I hate grinding but found myself just getting into fights over and over to enjoy the animations and look for fatality combos. Excellent combat system in my opinion, not revolutionary but evolutionary enough to make it stand out. |

of course it is more fun than auto-attack....since you know, it has skills and abilities.....just like pretty much every MMO out there. (some have auto attack, but none have just auto attack) OP, GL with trying the game out and I hope you find that you enjoy it. Everyone has had different MMO experiences and like different combat forms so this definitely could be the game for you. |

I'm going to say that I was too disapointed although I do not hate it. It was different then I imagined and actually requires more button mashing then a regular MMO (altho it takes more thought in this game) I believe that the way it's set up is kinda cumbersome, you have to set up your shields push the attack button then push your combo button. I think this will lead to someone running around circles stabbing you and you not being able to counter attack because you can't get a combo off in time. I thought it would have been better if lets say you pick 5 combos and you activate them by doing the right order of directional attacks and if you activated them all you do a cool finnisher move. It would have been less combersome IMO and could lead to ways of creating better looking combos. |
