at this point i dont think he (or she) has contacted anyone about game rights so lets not get ahead the idea is out there tons of us have thought about it because of the potential income it would bring in. for now he would need a design and a business plan to bring to the table so to speak |

Relating to games, the lingo is slightly different from books and other media. I think he means something along the lines of "classic" or a bundled collection of sorts. When games go gold, it means they sold a lot of copies and are being sold again for lower prices in a box with shiny stickers that say "buy me, I'm old and inexpensive!" They do that with the Sim (Maxis) games, and other things like old RPGs, Arcade games, etc. If they collect enough old stuff, they put it all in a box and call it a collection, usually a "Gold Collection". They also do that with games and expansion packs, as with Neverwinter Nights which went Gold (game + first expansion), Platinum (game + first + second expansion), and then Diamond (game + first + second expansion + all official downloadable content). Marketing is funny that way. Of notable significance in this area: Blizzard has been selling their bundles, known as Battle Chests, for years now. "Gold" or bundled collections usually only last a year or two before they're pulled from shelves. |

Evidently, I was mistaken. According to http://forums.bioware.com/viewtopic.html?topic=594411&forum=22&sp=30 EA owns everything, including the MMORPG rights, to all video games Potter related. My apologies for any confusion I may have caused.

Yeah, I meant by saying "Going Gold" was that the game sold so many copies that the game publisher repackaged the game (sometimes with current patches) and at a reduced price. If there was a Harry Potter MMO, it would be the most enticing IP out there to get my spouse's interest and join in on the fun. In support of this thread, I think several quests divided up into the "grade-years" at Hogwarts with the goal for eventual graduation ceremony from Hogwarts would be the ultimate goal for this MMO. But why stop there? Will JK Rowling write future books on Harry Potters Wizarding World? Graduation from Hogwarts is just a beginning. Albeit, more rewarding if it took you a couple of months playtime for each year at Hogwarts. So by the time your Character graduated, they would have indeed grown from a child to a young adult. Aging an Avatar in this MMO would be revolutionary, but also a feature of some magical spells that can alter your age appearance, therefore it should be common place to see age manipulation in this MMO. Buy the limited edition now to get your own House Elf. |

God forbid if EA makes an MMORPG. Here I am saying that, and I'm an atheist. Anyway, no need to apologize for confusion. The link you posted clears it all up, yet also slightly dampens the hope of a good Harry Potter MMORPG. **sigh** Does the truth always have to be this disappointing? Convincing an individual like Ms. Rowlings to jump into something new or different is one thing, but getting EA to make a decent game anymore is like scaling a wall of mud. |

Originally posted by NjaARd Ms Rowling cant lay claim to all wizards and/or schools.... The basic premise is good, the school permits character development (teachers to teach!) and groups easily formed (school chums). You'd have to instance loads of stuff to enable everyone to get in on the action, but the school will have competitions (official and 'kid-sponsored') to grant plenty of PvP. I'd stay away from Dark Magic/Light Magic, and instead just permit the users to acquire magic from various sources... teachers, books, non-teacher NPCs, quests etc and if the magical effect (or the method of casting) is deemed to be 'naughty' then they better not get caught using it. The school system will enable the teachers to prevent 'older-pupils' from picking on the less advanced users, power will increase as each year is completed due to access to more capable spells/potions and access to quests that again will grant additional abilities. If we assume you have a skilled based system (please) with ratings for each spell/skill then we could simply enhance all skills covered by certain classes as each year passes. The users will of course still be able to advance non-curiculum skills by simply using them (spot the naughty kids behind the Leaving school will present a much larger development... but if anyone wants to create it... please dont just copy WOW etc. |
