Just about to come back into the game, and cure my altoholism. I have been away for a while and haven't seen the developments in the game, but I used to play both Fighter and Wizard. I bought a new copy of the game to come back, create one character, and play it alone for the rest of my DDO life. So, before I commit I was curious as to what everyone has been playing and how do they like it.. what is an overplayed class and what is needed in the groups these days. ...and a wee poll. Thanks for your help! Oh yeah, any server recommendations?

I love playing a Rogue when I want to group. If I'm strapped for time I love playing my cleric and paladin and do a few solo instances. I'm trying to figure out how effectively play a wizard and not suck/die. Casters are a bit a challenge for me in this game. Servers don't matter much anymore. May depend if you want to play in a perma death guild with an alt or a main as to what server you choose. I don't know of any overplayed class. Somehow it will be like in a group and you're needing a healer and there is not a one to be found, other nights it can be full of healers and no type of tankage. Seems that way to me atleast on a few occasions. But really you should play what you find the most fun and not because one class is over or underplayed. It's a game have fun with it! You'll find you'll be making many alts anyways to figure out what you enjoy the most and maybe what you feel like playing at that moment.

hello krogg, If you like the fighter and wizard type chars,you could build a dual class fighter/wizard or wizard/fighter the first class being the more "powerful one". As the level cap is now 16 you can go even levels or staggered so the build is exactly the way you want it. One thing to remember is that wizards get access to more spells. Sorcerers get more spell points,but fewer spells. Have fun. |

I play one character a Warforged Ranger, mainly because I like to solo and short of a lot of offensive magic it seems to work a treat. I am intrigued to try a Warforged Monk when they come out (well probably when the numbers of monks dies down). |

Basic premise is only a level or 2 of a fighting class to get you weapon prof's and help with maybe a feat or 2 and go rest Wiz or Sorc, basically you retain ability to cast higher level spells and rely on self-buffs to boost melee capabilities, I recently got the opportunity to watch nick (the originator of the build) play it in the shroud, very nice and effective build. |

I see as an altaholic you are relapsing :) As Hvymetal pointed out, there are many possible builds that you might enjoy - the Search function on the DDO site isn't very good, but there are a few good threads on builds for characters. Maybe just try in the Classes forums...
Edit: I noticed that you left "Multiclasses" off your poll... So I went with Cleric, which is my highest class. |

If you like the concept of a Combat Caster you'll be glad to know that you're not nescesarrily required to pick up any levels of a fighter class to be effective. My Elven Sorcerer (main character) is not the best tank and doesn't do a tonne of melee damage but it's extremely effective in nuking and debuffing. Cool thing with DDO is you can build characters that fit your playstyle rather then having to alter your playstyle to fit a class. The trick is going to identify what and how you would like to do things then build around it. Weapon proficientcies for a Sorcerer or Wizard aren't that big of a deal. By default you will have all simple weapon proficienties not including racial allowances; Elf additionaly gets Rapier, Longsword and Longbow. There's also a 1st level spell which grants weapon proficientcies. As an example not to be taken as scripture: my sorcerer wears mithril chain shirt, uses a large shield and wields finnesible weapsons (ie: Dagger, light mace, sickle, rapier). The weapons I use have VERY specific effects on them such as Strenght Sapping, Cursespewing, Shattermantle and/or Destruction, to name the main debuffing choices I normally employ. Having the feat Finnese allows these weapons to recieve a ToHit modifier from my Dexterity (22) instead of the penalty I recieve from my Strength (9). The arcane aren't going to have a good Base Attack Bonus (BAB) so you'll need a little item that's probally the most overlooked "clicky" in the game: Divine Power! Divine Power basically turns what ever class your using into a hybrid for the duration of the spell. The clickies usually last 45 seconds, not seen one longer, and it grants the buffed character the same number of attacks and BAB as an equal level Fighter along with a +6 to Strength. This ability is far superior to the Tensors Transformation spell that prevents casting. And AC, there's a trade off at some point and the debate of it's value continues on the official forums, but I believe a high AC is noticible throughout a dungeon. I have a screen shot showing my Sorc with a 51 AC at level 15 and I've since improved upon some of the items I use and wear. In the end, your character is going to be dependant upon the effects and bonuses of the items you're using. It will make or break your character more then putting a few points into the wrong skill or attribute. DDO is a loot centric game and character development is highly dependant upon it. Thankfully, you can still be damned effective without the uber raid gear, but having it will make you Invincible! (just kidding.) Another good option for fighter/caster combo is a Bard with the Warchanter enhancement. I'm playing a Warforged Bard right now with Adamantine Plate and a level of fighter. He can turtle up with a Tower Shield and use intimidate to tank and still cast non-somatic spells like Blur, Blindness, and Otto's with no spell failure. |
