News
Ubisoft Readying Tom Clancy MMO

The name "Tom Clancy" was recently purchased by Ubisoft and now they are in the process of developing an MMO using his name, according to Gamasutra. By owning the Rainbow Six and Splinter Cell names, Ubisoft is exempt from paying royalties and can now develop a 'branded' MMO using Clancy's name.

Moreover, Guillemot revealed that the company has the technology in place to begin developing as soon as team sizes are appropriate. "We have the technology to create MMOs, and we have lots of our games that are on the Clancy franchise that are already multiplayer," he said.

"So to create an MMO, we need to have larger teams to actually spend the time and to create it. So it's more a question of decisions and teams, and now ,because we have the knowhow so we can go for it now."

Though Guillemot declined to say when the MMO might be coming, he estimated it would cost between $40 and $50 million to develop.

I reject your reality and substitute my own. -Adam Savage from Mythbusters

As long as the Tom Clancy games are good, it doesn't matter.  I like Tom Clancy and I can't wait for the Rainbow 6 and Splinter Cell movies too.  Hopefully they make it a true MMOFPS and not like some of the other games they consider MMOFPS like Warrock which I wouldn't consider an MMOFPS at all.

Considered its them say they are "looking at it" as an option I can see why it may not have been covered.

Reading the article they are ambitious to try and get all the game modes in clancy titles into a single experience.

Good Luck to them

July 28, 2007: A day the silent majority spoke and brought down the communications of the US Capitol

Although promising, I will play the "half-empty" glass card on this one.

My reason is the associated cost, of $40 to $50 million.  That means more expectations, to compete with WoW, greater complexity and therefore greater chance of failure.  This is entrench management, leading to deconstruction.

MMO's do not need to keep going up $5 to $10 million dollars a year (so it seems like) on average.  Rather think smarter, lower the cost, and provide a quicker development cycle.

I'll go ahead and call it, that it will fail to reach the market.

And that is why...

Conservatives' pessimism is conducive to their happiness in three ways. First, they are rarely surprised -- they are right more often than not about the course of events. Second, when they are wrong they are happy to be so. Third, because pessimistic conservatives put not their faith in princes -- government -- they accept that happiness is a function of fending for oneself. They believe that happiness is an activity -- it is inseparable from the pursuit of happiness.

As usual, I agree with Dracus.
