So far this game is awesome. I love the quests, and the fact that I actually have to think during them. I love the combat, its fast, fun, and exciting. I've grouped a little bit and that was a lot of fun too.

I don't see why this game gets such a bad rap. I mean sure its heavily instanced, and there isnt much exploration but as a game it is hella fun.

My thoughts exactly LOL!

In all fairness, some of the "bad rap" comes from it's own mistake of having a pretty light content level at release...sadly, a lot of people have no idea that it's been doubled since then.

EXACTLY! And the thing is I am having more fun than I've had in an MMO since EQ1. I mainly have been soloing though because I don't play for long stretches (my girlfriend lives a block away =P so she demands my full attention) but I've grouped quite a few times and its all been a lot of fun.

Now, the game does have it's faults, just like any other but they are few and far between in my eyes. It basically reminded me of LOTRO only fun. I played LOTRO for a little while, but got bored really fast. This game has a lot more action than any MMO I have played thus far and that is a good thing!

The trial is a huge boon to DDO, IMO.

I really question any game who doesn't have WoW like numbers that isn't offering one.

The instancing in DDO is a double egded sword.   Without it you would not have the awesome DM narrations and pathing.

The combat mechanics are fare superior to anyting I can think of currently availble for online gaming.

The main downfall is what feels like a lack of dynamic content and a persistant world.

I just started the free trial and so far I kind of like it. I like the depth of character development and I think the dungeons are very well done.

I have not grouped yet as i have tried a couple of different characters to get a feel for their differences (Wizard, ,rogue, ranger).

So far my only complaint is that the world seems a bit smallish (tho I understand there are large open outdoor areas)

My other gripes is that I have a the great ability to get magic items of no absolute worth to my character (My mage got 2 magic 2 handed swords lol)

Soling is a bit on the easy side. XP gain seems slow (I actually dont mind that..well not yet anway)

I may pay for a sub (still debating...)

Trust me, if you haven't grouped yet (which means you haven't done Waterworks) you're still in the Harbor...which is only about 5% of the city of Stormreach...which is only about 10% of the scope of the game.  Lots more to see.  Also, those are all introductory quests so they are definitely a bit easier, but try running them on normal (even if you're solo'ing) or even hard for more exp and more challenge.  Loot, well...it's D&D brother, it's a random loot table just like the PnP game, but you'll have no shortage of shiny stuff you can use soon.

DEFINITELY start grouping though, just for the experience of it...it's a whole different game, and this is definitely a game built with grouping at it's core.

p.s. Bear in mind, while grouping you still get the exact same amount of experience and loot you do when soloing...probably more exp and loot because you can enter the quests at a harder difficulty which scales both.

People should never listen to detractors, especially the unenlightened ones on this board. Try games for yourselves! I'm glad the OP did.  DDO is a fine game, and I'd play it if I didn't already have two other games subbed.

The combat system is arguably one of the best in online games. It's a system I wish Turbine would port over to LOTRO.
