Suppose that an MMO had an ultimate evil that could destroy that game world, and it was up to the players to stop it. Not something that could happen easily, or in the first couple of years after release. 1) The ultimate evil wins and destroys the world, destroying all characters and assets, and the game continues as a new world where the players all have to start over. 2) The players defeat the ultimate evil, and save their world. Life goes on. New challenges soon to come. How would you feel about it? Would you play it, skip it, be pissed if all your stuffs is destroyed and you have to start over, what? |

As much as I might regret it if it happened.... I must say yes I have always thought an idea like this would be awesome, really give a new edge to a MMO..it would add elements I feel are missing more from MMO's...kinda like how I felt back in 1998 UO...the way their death system worked is in my opinion the best ever and should be copied whenever possible. The world should feel dangerous, and death should hurt. However this game might fail financially because people might whine too much. perhaps make it so you dont loose everything....perhaps reborn into a new char with the same level? but this would cause many complications hmm good topic |

Sorry to be blunt, but what are you smoking bud? The devs are still trying to pass 'Get me 10 wolf meat' quest thingies. And personally I don't like much Armageddon scenarios, the idea just has to many blank spots to be succesful.
For me VETO! |

MMORPG Character Monuments ...When its time for your character to take a well deserved rest... |
I , honestly wouldnt mind a permadeth kind of MMORPG.I suppose the problem in your scenario is that players are dependent on eachother. And lets be honest, with the people I play with...the world is doomed. HOwever, I wouldnt mind the chalenge of fighting for my own individual characters life. Torrential |

It sounds good to me, I'm tired of new mmo's having almost no consequences if you lose/die Dieing should be a bad thing you should have real reprucusions lose alot of items something more than just becoming a ghost and walking 2 minutes to your body *cough*WoW*cough*. I always thought it would be cool if the devs did something like what you suggested, or even perma-death. |

Don''t cry that you''re being walked on, if you act like a carpet... |
There are no reasons why a MMO wouldn't have an end, other then pulling the plug if it has too few customers. I would definitely play such a game if the game play is fun all around. I don't cry when i finish Oblivion, and i won't cry if the MMO i play ends because players are too incompetent to defend the world agaist NPC. (Or against other players. A faction that wins would be refreshing for once instead of that stupid non ending pandora box) |

I actually think that it would be a pretty decent idea. The only other game that I know of like this would be Diablo 2's hardcore mode. I'm sure that there would be all kinds of kinks you would have to iron out, but you're on to something and I would play it. One scenario that I would be worried about is what about all the people that come into the game in the middle? They prolly wouldn't be a high enough level (or such) to make a difference in the combat aspect of defeating the evil. So like Czzarre said, your survival would be completely dependant on the higher levels. I think it's a great idea though. I'm ready for something relatively new. An MMORPG with an actual storyline that you get to participate in? Go figure! |

The "evil" side would need to be judged by the active population and level average (or player rating if levels weren't a factor) to determine its strength and weakness. If you had a low pop server and you had an overwhelming evil side then it wouldn't be fun. If it had something like Horizons had where the blight was creaping over the land and the players had to stop it. There were events on Horizons where the dark side would invade and we had to defend. The ides has been out there, you would just need a game to captivate the players and give them a reason to fight. You would also need to take into consideration if the evil side was about to take over, people would want to jump ship. So there would need to be a limitation on character transfers (if even offered). While many of us (me included) would love to see some of the more annoying players on some games get wiped and never return, you would also run the risk of losing your core players. Maybe if the server got taken over and there was a wipe, there would need to be some sort of perk for players to come back. |
