The Lucasarts website has released a new press release today in conjunction with Bioware. The press release announces that the two companies will be collaborating on "an interactive entertainment product".

While it should be noted that there is no specific mention of an MMORPG, but the mysterious announcement does come at a time when speculation about BioWare's Austin's MMO being the much-prophesized Knights of the Old Republic MMORPG is at an all-time high.

Managing Editor Jon Wood contacted Lucasarts this morning and was told that at this time, they "aren't releasing any details about the actual product".

SAN FRANCISCO, CA and EDMONTON, CANADA -- October 30, 2007 -- LucasArts and BioWare Corp. today announced that they have entered into an agreement to create an interactive entertainment product. The product, details of which will be unveiled at a later date, will be developed and published by BioWare and LucasArts, and will push the boundaries of the gaming market by utilizing the strengths of both companies to deliver an innovative, high-quality experience.

"LucasArts has a deep commitment to developing compelling stories and characters for the unique medium of interactive entertainment, and we have been searching for a developer that shares this value. We found this in BioWare," said Jim Ward, president of LucasArts. "Through our previous collaborations, we know that BioWare has an impressive ability to blend gripping stories with technological advancements, and we believe that our upcoming product will deliver an experience that will span the traditional boundaries of video game entertainment."

"BioWare's mission is to deliver the best story and character-driven games in the world, delivering powerful emotional experiences to our fans." said Ray Muzyka, chief executive officer, BioWare Corp. Added Greg Zeschuk, president of BioWare Corp., "The collaboration with LucasArts allows us to combine our passion for creating high quality and innovative experiences with those of a company dedicated to bringing only the finest games

I think it would be hilarious if it was some type of interactive program for the new TV series of Star Wars that Lucas is supposed to be making.

Or even funnier if it was a Pirate game... Monkey Island Online.

Currently playing:
LOTRO & WoW (not much WoW though because Mines of Moria rocks!!!!)

Looking Foward too:
Bioware games (Dragon Age & Star Wars The Old Republic)

Darkside points FTW..........

Hello KoTOR Online, Goodbye SWG! If it is KoTOR Online this would be the final nail in the coffin of SWG, may she rest in peace.

As much as I'd kill for a KOTOR MMO, I'd be just as interested in something original. So long as it's not fantasy :\

Where does it say its not?  I saw no mention of KotOR or the like anywhere in the press release.  Heck, it could be a Howard the Duck mmo for all anyone knows.

Well its one step towards the news that most of us have been waiting for. Now all we need is an official game announcement . KoTor  or SWG 2 ?   Oh and the next piece of the jigsaw would be when estimated release date will be & Smedley can finally rest in peace .

What makes a good MMO? Good quality, good customer service, good business model, good fun.

Hey thanks for the update Stradden ^_^.  I'm still doing the wait and see thing, but I can't help hoping another company is given stewardship of the StarWars saga for the MMO game genre.  It would be very nice to see the story and its history--along with its fans--treated with honesty, integrity and a shared love for what's become a modern day classical mythology.

If it's a StarWars MMO, that'll be great.

If it's a StarWars MMO that doesn't delete professions, years of quest progress, change core game mechanics unexpectedly, or sell an expansion for the game system they're planning to delete within a few weeks, that'll be priceless ^_^.

If it's Bioware and they are working on a Star Wars title, I'll be happy no matter what it is. Fps, MMO, RPG, whetever... It'll be awesome.

Obviously, *looks at sig* I hope it's going to be a MMO

Here's hoping. I know Mass Effect launches within the next few weeks, so hopefully after that, we'll get some idea of what this is going to be.

Woot, what ever the game is, woot

Games I would want to see as MMOs

Sam and Max the MMO

Day of the tentacle the MMO

Full throttle the MMO

The DIG the MMO

And the best IP of all.  Indiana Jones the MMO.

Well, it's official. I asked the Magic 8 Ball if Bioware was developing Kotor Online and it said "Absolutely!"

Then I asked it if Kotor Online would suck and it said "No Way!"

Rejoice!

I think that is a strong possibility actually.

And that is why...

Conservatives' pessimism is conducive to their happiness in three ways. First, they are rarely surprised -- they are right more often than not about the course of events. Second, when they are wrong they are happy to be so. Third, because pessimistic conservatives put not their faith in princes -- government -- they accept that happiness is a function of fending for oneself. They believe that happiness is an activity -- it is inseparable from the pursuit of happiness.

Heh, now is time for phase 2!  Everyone has built up their expectations for a KotOR game, now whether it is or not, everyone WANTS this, or that, or whatever... so now when everyone does not get exactly what they want, even IF it is the game build they wanted, so many are still going to cry and be disappointed.  I wonder how long before people liken it to SWG.  "OMFG!  They do not listen to their players because what *I* wanted is not in" heh... I can hear it already.  I think I need to go buy more popcorn.

LA  is just as culpable as SOE over the CU-NGE, as with a lot of IP partnerships, the owner of the IP has the final say of what goes into the game.  So what that boils down to is LA giving the green light to, or even orchestrating, the whole CU-NGE debacle.  There is nothing stopping them from doing it again with any new Star Wars mmorpg and turning Bioware into the next whipping boy of angry Star Wars gamers.

Here to hoping that Bioware have a little more 'executive' control of what goes into the game.
