Moo.

What can you (current or recent players) tell me about your home servers, in terms of personality and population? For instance, newbie friendly or not? Relative population levels during "prime time" (US evening hours) and off-peak hours? Guilds cooperative or competitive with each other?  Is the LFG tool used or do people mainly look for group in the General channel? Any jargon specific to your server? Any information would be appreciated-- whatever you think might be relevant to someone who is choosing a server, and whatever might be helpful to a new player when they first arrive on your server.

Yeah, I know it is an old game, and none of the servers are going to be teeming with newbies, or even alts. Just humor me.

Tomorrow, I am going to resubscribe to EQ1 and start playing a new character.  For giggles, I am going to play this one character for 31 days to see how far I can get without powerleveling or twinkage. Maybe this thread will yield information useful to other people as well.

I've been hearing that Stromm is a good server to go to, and I've heard some good things about Bristlebane.

Lowbie population is... well, there always seems to be folks in the tutorial and there appears to be a very small population in Crescent reach. I've never seen the chat in the tutorial be anything but helpful and entertaining (can't say they don't flame, I just haven't seen it). Their doesn't seem to be much chat in Crescent Reach and I can't say folks group, much. Chat tends to be a cross between friendly and taunting. No flames, but maybe 50/50 helpful vs smart remarks.

I have no idea what the population is like between Crescent Reach and any high end content - sorry.

I do know that PoP is... tough. I can't get groups for my alts in here to get spells or flags. Yet you do see groups in certain areas...

At the high end chat seems to go in waves. For days you'll get nothing but helpful conversation, then something changes, for the next couple of days, it's solid flames. Then back to helpful. Grouping, I've never had problems finding a group, in or outside my guild. I'm also the kind of person that doesn't socialize well... so that should say something... I do use the LFG tool.

I think it's possible, depending on the class, to solo up to at least the low 30's if you follow the Crescent reach exp path. I have a beast that made 35 on pure solo. But the game is designed for grouping and that would make a difference over time spent and what you could do - I had to skip alot of quests and put in extra time on recoveries (but this character was a test for solo'ing). Pick a server and find a friend - even duo'ing is prefered to solo play! :-D

My dog barks some. Mentally you picture my dog, but I have not told you the type of dog which I have. Perhaps you even picture Toto, from "The Wizard of Oz." But I warn you, my dog is always with me.

I'm in between games (and in between gaming rigs) so recently I decided to revisit Norrath--on my Macbook. The newbie areas on the Mac server were empty. Keep in mind that the Mac server has several strikes against it--firstly, it is well, um, A MAC SERVER, and secondly, there have been no updates to that server since Planes of Power. I thought the population might be a little more substantial simply because there are so few MMORPGs made specifically to run on Macs, but much to my chagrin, it was just little old me in many of the starting areas I tried.

I play on the Zek (PvP) server.  It is still going strong with lots of guilds and raiding opportunities.

Try double boxing two accounts and see how that works =).

I might try over the summer to create 2 accounts and double box them all the way to 60 and see how that works. Probably do a warrior and a cleric and hopefully be able to get 4 more people to join me in a group in zones.
