Sigils answer to everyting... "can you bumpmap that?"

PvP battles in Eve online.

Imagine you and your team warping in to a battle with expensive ships with expensive modules. If you die you lose all of your stuff. If you win you can salvage the enemys loot. But there is more. Its not just a fight for a bit of loot. Its a fight between huge alliances for domination of space. The fight is happening in a solarsystem for its control. The winner gains hold of the system, the loser has to fallback and regain strength. The battle has a meaning and will change the landscape of the universe. Now imagine you being with 400 people in a voice tool fighting against another 400 player fleet. The fleet commanders are giving out last overall commands, the scouts are reporting movements from neighbouring systems, the enemy is smack talking in local chat, the covert ops are moving in position on the battlefield. Then the fight starts. We only have got this one chance, there is no coming back. Its now or never.

Bah EvE sounds great when put like that.. but I just cannot stand the game, or space based games as a whole.

Hehe, I understand you. Maybe the upcoming upgrade with avatars on stations/ships could interest you. (stations with shops, bars, casinos). You can walk around like in your typical fantasy game, speak with friends, play poker in a bar, etc. Its a social tool called ambulation and is coming 2008 (early I hope).

About the fleet fight: I overdid it a bit. Smaller fights are great, but the big ones tend to have too much lag which is a fun killer.

As much as I avoid PVP in most MMOs I have to say it was 2 strictly PVP MMOs that really got my blood pumping., WW2 Online and Planetside. Also, EQ2 used to get my blood pumping back when you could be killed if you travelled to far and the nights were pitched black and you had to run back to get your corpse.

...Aye! A roar he cried frae the bottom of his heart that I would nay fall but as dead, dead as 'a can be by his feet; de ya ken?...and the wind cried back.

Definitely the castle sieging in Lineage 2 when you and hundreds of others are battling it out either trying to defend or siege.

I would also say L2 but not the castle sieges as much as the unexpected PvP that would happen while leveling. In sieges the PvP was expected and anticipated but out in the wilds when you're just hunting and you all of a sudden get hit with an unexpected spell or arrow the adrenaline level goes through the roof. These were the times when you had to react quick or death would soon follow. It was the fact that you constantly had to keep an eye on your back that kept me coming back for more.

For me pvp does the trick. Mostly when playing a caster class or with someone else with low def but good dmg. Having a near death experience seems do give me an adrenaline rush.

Only Ultima Online has given me that real Adrenaline Surge and I've tried a lot of other MMO's.  From the moment you leave a city you start to get that adrenaline surge, though it is when you approach & enter a dungeon that it spikes (it really spikes when someone run's past you yelling "pk" and seconds later you see a group sweeping the dungeon).  It is item loss coupled with the unpredictable nature of pvp (trammel screwed that up) that made the game the single most intense MMO on the market (PvE is and always will be lame compared to PvP).  Shadowbane is / was second to the extent that if you die you loose everything in your back-pack (not the items you are wearing) though .

Nothing PvE gives me an adrenaline surge either.  The only times I felt twitchy was after PVP in Granado Espada and playing a tournament in Albatross 18.

Grumpy old huggable wolf

I'm afraid that there's only really one MMO these days that can give me an adrenaline surge. EVE Online. As frustrating as harsh death penalties may be, they do a great job at ensuring a kick@ss adrenaline surge when you watch days, weeks or even months of hard work being blasted to bits and pieces.

EVE online - the MMO that takes PVP to a whole new level. Everything you own can and will be ganked, including your boot.ini.

So, what in mmorpgs, gives you that adrenaline rush, that surge of chaos and hot blood through your veins?

For me its alot of pvp moments....

I have played many MMORPGs, both good and bad, but the only game that actually gave me that adrenaline rush was Dark Age of Camelot RvR combat.

Just stepping out into your own Frontier or into the enemy Fronter was a real rush, fraught with danger and very exciting.

This is the reason I am hoping EA Mythic's Warhammer Online will be well made and offer some of those good old RvR thrills and chills.
