This has been burning in my head ALL DAY. I remember some game was supposed to be a trilogy with the third game being a MMO but for whatever reason the trilogy was never done. I can't for the life of me figure it out, but I know for fact there was a game series that was going to do this, but never did.

Searching for mmo and trilogy on google has turned up incredibly fruitless.
