I was hoping some of you could offer your insight for the best MMORPG to play with a dial-up connection? I'm currently playing Last Chaos and it is fun, but I'd love to have a good backup for when it gets too monotonous. I do prefer 3D games and am not interested in playing Runescape (or similar games) or Guild Wars (lost interest). Thanx in advance for any/all suggestions.

I played EQ1, WoW and EQ2 on 24k dialup for six years. 90% of the time it's fine. The other 10% (huge raids, prime-time big cities and occasional lag spikes) sucked, but were tolerable. If you have the luxury of 56k dialup it'll be even better!

Upgrade your dial-up with cable then we can answer you?

lol, seriously, I'm pretty sure you can afford that upgrade, maybe you will get less lag in game,

And get some better MMORPG with fees like WoW or Vanguard(lol joke )  quality of servers might give you a better online experience. But do what you want, ignore what I just said if you disagree.

:sigh:

As a niblet of advice to you, one should always consider location, not affordability, as a key factor to the reason for currently having a dial-up connection.

Can I afford cable? Hell yes!   However, I live in a rather remote location, it is literally impossible to have cable/dsl out here.

Also, I am aware that I could get a satellite connection, and if I ever run across a deal where they'll do the installation for free, or for considerably less than it normally costs, I'll definitely get it. I'm just not a proponent of paying $400-700 dollars to have some guys come install a dish.

So, thanks, but no thanks on the advice. If people like you would worry about being more constructive (or not posting at all), it would surely help keep the count of needless posts down.

unlike the douchebags, I applaud you for toughing things out. I played Counterstrike, diablo, starcraft etc for years without high-speed with negative kill ratios always.

Anyhoo, last chaos is pretty graphic intensive, if you can run that and are ok with it you can probably run WOW which is the best all around mmo. DAOC is the best mmo period but I noticed such a huge difference in my pvp ability from the jump from t3 to dsl, I'd worry. If you have a sick gfx card that might make up the difference, try that out.

Extremism in the defense of Liberty is no vice.

FFXI is optimized for 56k connection. Whether a person has dial-up or broadband, servers/client only transfer data at 56k/sec. So, that would be a very good choice.

I know way back in the day, I was playing UO on a 28K connection for years.  If your interested in a game like that I'd give it a try.  Its funny when I play UO today, it has the same familiar dial-up feel on cable, as it did years ago on my modem.

Any non-twitch based combat MMOs would be playable on Dial-Up.  Games like Dungeons & Dragons and Planetside wouldn't be.  The reason for it is because mmos are designed to send as little information as possible.  Each packet is incredibly small, like less then 1KB.  The problem would be patching.  This kind of makes some games like Vanguard unplayable on Dial-up because any change would be a large patch.  Also with in-game housing it would also mean you need to transfer large data then as well.  But most mmo should work fine on Dial-Up.

A friend of mine used to do the 40 man raids in WoW with Ventrillo and had no problems.

More than half of America ar still using dial up internet so MMO developers are not going to exclude them.

i would have to agree that u shouldn;t just tell someone to get cable. I know for a fact that places out in the boonies don't have high speed yet. So just make do with what you got. and a 56k connection will work fine with any game that isn't high graphic based, such as vanguard and eq2. stick to the older ones or ones that don't need a super computer to run.

That is very inspiring, indeed!

Well, so far, from checking out a few that you guys have mentioned, EQ2 looks really good. To make sure I get everything I need, I will need to buy EQ2 Classic and the Echoes of Faydwer expansion, right? And when I say 'need', I mean, to be up to date with the latest and all that.

I'm still no 100% sure I'm going the EQ2 route, but it looks promising. If anyone has any further suggestions, my ears (and eye ) is open!

By the way, thanks for all the suggestions and help thus far, I really do appreciate it!

Well if you want to play EQ2 you can buy it with all the expansions from here

http://www.direct2drive.com/6/4362/product/Buy-EverQuest-II:-All-In-One-Compilation-Download

The only thing is that you would have to download it and it will take a while with 56k.

Thanks for the link. I may have to end up doing that if I can't find it in-stock at a local store, because of the seriously long download time I'll be look at.

Does anyone know if Roma Victor is playable on a dial-up connection? I have my doubts about that one, but supposedly they have serious sporadic lag no matter the connection, dunno.

The Echoes of Faydwer RETAIL box is the full game.  Try amazon.com.  No need to buy the base game.  If you need the full game, DO NOT buy the download from the Sony website because they do not include anything with it.  As someone already said, your greatest problem is going to be download time.  Your initial patch is going to last quite a few hours even if you had DSL.

Someone in my guild in LotRO plays via dialup and seems to have surprisingly few problems. He lags a bit going into instances, and sometimes when there are a lot of people around (or enemies in an instance), but overall he plays the game fine and you wouldnt know he was on dialup if he didnt tell you.

Ceol and Duri - LotRO (Landroval)
Kili - WoW
Eol - Lineage 2
Camring - SWG
Justinian, Camring - DAoC

My apolozgize captain, I live in Canada and everyone or so have cable, i don't live in a desert and so i don't care about the careless messages I post on this forum. I post what I think and it might be stupid as well but oh well I don't care.

I played eq1 for years on a dial up with no problem whatsoever then when daoc came out I played that for 2 years on dial up..No problems in rvr at all except for the 100 man raids we use to do in the beginning but overall in wasn't a problem at all.  So you should be good on quite a few games I'd imagine.
