Decimauts, you seem to be uber pro and know alot about this so im going to ask you a question. Can i master witchcraft, arcane magic and ritual magic? or i can only learn some of them? im not sure if witchcraft is evil magic or w/e. And if i do go 100% mage will i be some how gimped? or will i be sucessful in pve and pvp combat? Also i would like to know if u can unlearn a skill. Cuz maybe i wont be able to learn Greater Magic at first so ill have to settle with lesser magic so i can kill a few mobs and become strong till i get to Greater magic. But than having learned lesser magic, greater magic and lets say wtichcraft and arcane magic it will be harder to learn ritual magic. So can i unlearn lesser magic and make some room in my " pool skill point thingy " ?

Wittchcraft, Ritual, and Arcane, almost certainly. Witchcraft isn't necesarily evil, since Necromancy is usually referred to when they mention evil magic, but there could be some evil spells in that school. Arcane and ritual magic aren't mutually exclusive to evil magics anyway, so there shouldn't be an issue. 100% mage shouldn't be "gimped" since magic is very important in the game, however it is really hard to say at this point. I think a mix of some kind will be appropriate, even if the mix is only to the effect of 90% mage and 10% other. Last I heard you could unlearn skills, though that may mean going through a quest to do so. The devs have tried to make clear that you can't gimp your character and will always have the option of switching gears to adapt. Lesser magic is a requirement of Greater magic, so if you want to keep Greater magic you will have to keep something like a minimum of 45 points in Lesser magic. A point I should make is that we don't know whether we will even be able to see the skill pool. So, you could be riding your softcap and not even realize it other than thinking to yourself how skilling up got slower.... We also don't know exactly how tough the softcap will be. It could slow down skill gains by only 10% for the first mastered skill(beyond however many mastered skills you could fit into the pool), and maybe 30% for the skill after that. It could be a steep grade, or it could be relatively shallow. The point being that I think you should be able to squeeze in a 4th or 5th spell school without putting yourself into a horrible grind. Probably slower, but not too bad at first. We get a better idea once we actually get into the game. The house of peace is built on the foundation of war. You must conquer the land before you build you house and live in peace. |

I cant play any MMO that have levels and classes. SWG didnt have it...but they put it in
Seriously, skills is what the freedom is all about. I mean whats a damn level?? "you need to be lvl 20 to use this item"?? or lvl 10 to have a mount?? What does that mean?? In DF you can pick up anything and use it, some items might need you to learn the skill first..but still, its more close to real life So DF will truly be a fine game with the skill system they got.

If you're going to stick it out there, don't be afraid if you get it cut off. |

But dont worry, in DF you will only have the skills you want. You dont have to do anything you are not interested in. This may scare some players that are used to letting the game telling them what to do. If you really like short sword and arcane magic..thats what you will gain...skills you dont like (never is used) you loose...so they dont cost skillpoints for the good skills. And if you used them..that means you like them..... Maybe you think "but i want all skills!" then i say it again....what do you want to do? then you do that |

it's awesome because your char never has to die. you can just pick up a new weapon and go at it.

You won't have to worry about skill degradation for many years to come.

Nothing is better than a skill system in my opinion. Levels are for people who may be gamingly impaired but need to feel a sense of achievement. "I Cant even button bash you to death in pvp, but im lv 100 so i OWN YOU!" To be honest i cannot see why levels would be implemented. Its bloody obvious from uo alone that the skill system is still very popular. If not for some unfortunate shifts in the direction of UO then i would still be playing it. I still play osi and pre-tram free servers but only because every other mmo is level based and i can't just jump into a game and start fighting because i need to spend 2875 hours to get to lv XX so i can grind for some XX level gear to finally be able to use my 9 hot keyed skills and kill people with exactly the same gear, stats, skills as me.
Hell i really hope this game comes to the pvp community. So i can finally go back to a game were i have to have some sort of a brain and skill to get by. Whats fun about grinding static mobs that spawn in the same place and with no fear that anything can kill me except if i accidentally overdose on speed and cola because the game bores me half to death. Get my adrenaline pumping, instill fear into my heart. A big reason i think pvp does not work in many games now is because of the level system. You cant just jump into it and start killing, open pvp would not work because you have no chance against someone 5+ levels above you. Game producers wont learn. Its going to be 98% emulation of wowcrap for a few years until people start committing suicide, and trying to assassinate SOE ceo's. Huxley had potential until i found out it was instanced battle and nothing like a rectified planetside (r.i.p) Here i am blabbering on, maybe i can waste enough time and then realize DFO has been released? Currently playing: Planetside, Americas Army.

spending all your time leveling is gay, spending all your time pvping and killing stuff in order to grow strongers ... uberness :D and the fact that a noob, who just made an account CAN do damage to some guy playing for months makes me wanna say "WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAH"... Skill > everything here, and thats why i liek darkfall. Played almost everything... |
