What do you think of no leveling in Darfall?

Do you like the normal leveling or advancing the skill you want by using it?

I prefer the way it is! I want to hear your opinions in this subject!

Do you prefer the advancement system that Darkfall use or the normal one?

Yes!
No!
I don't care, leave me alone!

thats what is good about this game.  theres no combat levels.  you learn skills and spells directly from other players and NPC.  and the more you use the skills you learn the better you are at it.  so a noob might learn a very powerful spell while some veteran doesn't know that spell yet but have something to counter it.  this is why this system will be useful to protect yourself from players that want to kill you for no reason.  this is also another reason that will support the no safe zones idea i talked about in "zones" topic under the wishing well forum.

I love it..

One of the main reasons being the first MMORPG I played was Ultima Online..

and I still consider that to be the best game I've played up to this date..

I'm really looking forward to Darkfall, though..

Hoping it'll be the game of my dreamas <3

It is definately going to be a milestone in the mmorpg market if they can back up everthing they are saying they are going to implement into the game. Also the skill system will be awesome! Finally a game were I can weild any thing or wear any type of armor without have to be a certain level.....yes I may not be good at weilding a mace because I specialize with my recurve bow but nonetheless I can weild it. I am really looking forward to this game.

If sharing my all knowing knowledge offends you I apologize........kinda!

Skill system i'm all for it. Played tons of games that had levels and countless hours hunting the same mobs for hours just to get to new content or the SWEET SWEET armor and weapons you couldn't get because its requirement is lvl 60 but your only level 1 and you know that months and months of grinding/quests are between you and that armor and weapon.

The skill system will hopefully change this...I haven't played UO so I don't know how it was like in there.

It's definately a great idea just because it's unique. Only good things can come out of it. For all the hype, this game better be what their making it look like.

i'd go for the skill system too, but it would be good to know if there will be a skill limit like in UO (not only a cap for every skill, but also a total skill cap)

There has to be a total cap!!! imagine being 120 every skill in UO it would take forever but then u would be a god! if they dont put a max skill cap, it can cause a big balance issue.

The devs haven't said a whole lot about how their skill system works - except that they've got hundreds of skills "on paper".  You would think there would have to be something in place to prevent people from being able to max out and use every skill on a whim.  Personally I hope they go with more of a GuildWars type model, in that you can only take X number of skills with you on the field, than doing what UO did with skill point hard caps.

Looks great to me, I love the idea of a game where I can get right down to the nitty gritty.

There's not gonna be a hard limit in skills in DFO, only a soft cap. That means, you can learn as many skills as you want, but as you advance, its gonna get harder to raise your skill.

From what I thought I read was the cap was going to be at 100...but you can learn whatever you want as long as it is not species specific...ofcourse tho I could be wrong since I am half asleep and have been reading about 100 different MMO's this past couple of days since I gave up SWG!!!

I like the idea of a skill point 'pool'. It means each individual can build his/her character the way he wants to play, without giving a completely unbalanced disadvantage to those who can't play 24/7. It means that just like in real life, there are choices to be made involving tradeoffs and investment of time.

A suitable alternative to a skill point pool would be a maintenance requirement - if one doesn't use a skill, it slowly degrades. That way, a person would have to REALLY stretch to try and keep top notch skills in broad areas i.e. Magic and Swordplay or Combat and Crafting.

Its a trick question

"Do you prefer the advancement system that Darkfall use or the normal one?"

So if I take yes I am then saying yes to both?

Do you Prefer to advancment system, Yes or the normal once, Yes

Darkfalls, No Normal one, No

You see its a trick question since its two questions at the same time with a yes or no answer! :D

Darkfalls system is far far superior however

Darkfall has hard caps on individual skills.  So sword swinging or whatever can be 100 max.  You can max out perhaps 5-6 major skills give or take.  Once you max those skills out, it starts to get harder and harder to level up new skills.  So, a noob might get lvl 2 in mace after hitting a mob 10 times.  A person that already has a few maxed out skills might get level 2 in mace after hitting the same mob 11-15 times.  The more skills you gain, the longer they take to level up each point.  So, you could theoretically get 100 in all 500 skills.  Of course you would have to play for a century to do so.

That sounds like an unlikly system and one I would argu agaisnt to the darkfall devs, also I would like to see a game where chosing to increase in one skill makes another skill offlimits for example necromancy and nature magic. Also however I do believe they have said some skills will be alignment specific. I hope they also make some racial racialrestrictions such as no swords or bows for dwarves and no axes for the elves.

I hate the see a game where people who start playing 2 years after release have to wait 4 years before they can catch up. I would rather they put a cap at like 5 skills to 100, 15 skills to 75, 30 skills to 50 and all other skills to 25. I dont like the idea of people creating chars that are everything and is as good at everything.

Look at me im the super arcrobat, necromancer, priest, tank, ranger, wizard, arrow making, siege engine driving, merchant king, barbarian. Probably no one has played Horizon and seen what a horribly idea this is but I hope they dont make that mistake and it would actually be far worse in a pvp game.

Otherwise however we will see a game where every last person has some stealth ablities, everyone will have heals, everyone will have buffs, everyone will have heavy armor, everyone will be masters at magic, bows, swords, axes, hammers, spears and hand to hand. Have to say that will not create a very dynamic interesting game imo when everyone has the same character.

As unlikely as you may find that Krogan, that is how it works.  Go do a little research on the DF boards, in dev interviews, etc.

Soft Cap.  You have a skill pool, and each skill is given a weighted value(I am going to make up some random weighted values and pool limits).  Lets say 1 point in sword is 10 points to the pool.  1 point in cooking may be 5 points in the pool.  1 point in heavy armor is 12 to the pool.  The first tier of the pool is lets say 5000 points.  That means you can level up as many skills as you want, so long as you have less than 5000 points in the pool.  Once you surpass that pool limit each new skill point will be gradually harder to get.

You max out 20 major skills and you end up with a pool that has 20000 points in it.  The next skill point you get is going to be exponentially harder to attain than if you had gained that same skill point back when your skill pool had only 4000 points in it.  That is the system as it was last described by the Developers.  You have a wide range of freedom but you can't master everything in the world.

This may seem to put you at a disadvantage as a noob, but the person with 100 skills can still easily loose to the person with 5-10 skills.  For one, most if not all spells need a reagent to use.  You have limited backpack space.  Second, certain combat skills will get in the way of magic skills.  A plate steel wearing mage is going to take probably twice as long to cast a spell as a robe wearing mage, and the plate wearer will probably fail his spells more often.

You won't need to catch up to compete, you need only attain competence in a few areas and work your way up towards greater diversity.

Darkfall does have a system similar to what you describe in necromancy vs nature magic.  If you learn fire magic, you can't learn ice magic.  If you learn necromancy, you can't learn holy magic.  From what I have seen, this system is limited to magic schools.

There are alignment hits for using certain spells such as a few found in the necromancy school.  You could probably gain positive alignment by casting holy spells.

You cite Horizons as an example, but did you ever try to make one of those all in one characters?  I had a character that had 15 levels in all 5-6 starting classes.  It took me like 2 hours to make a single level at level 15 with that many classes.  Can you imagine how many hours it would take to make a single level on a character if I had 5 lvl 35 classes?  It could take an entire day.  Now imagine repeating that 5 times over.  5 days to make all your classes level 36.  Now imagine taking that to level 100, with it getting harder and harder and harder to advance.  It isn't feasible.  Long before you get to that point the game developers have long since closed the servers.

And that isn't even addressing the fact that of those 5 classes you couldn't possibly take advantage of more than 2-3 of them at a time.  You can't cast a fireball, swing an axe, and heal yourself at the same time.  You can't wear a robe, platemail, 3 different helmets, or whatever at once.

In darkfall the really dedicated power gamers will master 1-3 class types AT MOST.  After years of playing they will have a few classes mastered.  They aren't going to be significantly more powerful than the casual gamer who has mastered a single class type.

The house of peace is built on the foundation of war.

You must conquer the land before you build you house and live in peace.
