Does anyone at MMORPG actually program MMORPG'S?

I think it would be cool to actually collect a staff of programmers and create an MMORPG, you know as a side project or something.

The team would have to be relatively big, and it would take awhile before anyone actually started programming because we would have to plan what kind of game we are actually going to make, create a background for races, characters, NPC's, monsters, etc.  Also we would have to assign roles such as; 3D artist, coders, someone for storyline, etc. Then there would be the designs for the characters, monsters, etc.

I could go on and on.

Seems like a good idea, but a lot of work.

It would be nice to see some people actually interested.

I myself am not an advanced programmer, but I have read books on programming languages, I have made games in flash, which is totally irrevalant since creating a 3D MMORPG is totally different.

Maybe we can get a team together and just chat about it in IRC at designated times , just discuss it until we are ready to get into action?

If  enough people are interested we can start assigning roles and creating a story.

Please list what game experience you have or any role you can fill in game design, that way I can make a list of anyone who's interested.

Iv come across a number of programmers on these threads.   I program to an extent, C#, C++, VB.   DOT NET 2.0.     Unfortunatly Iv only done business type (Database and organization) work.    In the mean time you could start on some ideas by yourself, jot down some thoughts and possibly a story line.  If you come up with a great idea you might peak some peopls interest

I'm intrigued.

However I have no knowledge of programming whatsoever.

But I am a talented artist, so I could do concept art and write the story.

I'm good at playing games and talking about them. I'm also good at telling Chuck Norris jokes (not that there's anything funny about him.)

Well jot down some notes on a story or possible characters/races.

And maybe draw some sketches for them?

Take your time, I can program to an extent and I know c, c++, learning c#, and some actionscript. Everyone who is interested will be given some jobs and a role.

Nothing set in concrete right now, we are all just spit ballin, any ideas for what type of features in the MMORPG can also be thrown out there.

Possible Roles:

Beta tester?

Won't be until awhile though, a long wait indeed until something like this gets finished.

A few friends and I tried to make an mmo about a year ago. I think one major point you need to get across is do you want to make this game for fun or to make money? Some people only will work on a project like this if they get paid. Or their main motivation is to get paid at some point.

We got as far as  a storyline and some drawings on potential UI setups. My point is the people involved have to be on the same page.

And yes the type of MMO is also important.

- FFA PvP
- Corpse Looting (100%)
- No Levels
- No quests
- No classes (just free play for everyone! Work up whatever skills you want to work up and create your own character how you want.)
- No radar or coordinates (navigate by land features)
- Able to swim
- Able to fly somehow
- FPS
- Housing (decoratable)
- Boats
- Insta-ban for spamming, cheating, farming, selling gold (or whatever currency)
- Graphics match loot (if the creature looks like it has an axe, it has an axe on his dead body)
- Good AI, roaming creatures not confined to one area (and repeatedly spawning in the same spot... instead, let them roam around and kill each other and loot each other too! Then the loot can be special and make its way around the world!)
- No instances
- Truly rare magic items (there aren't entire guilds running around in uber l33t gear)
- super-realistic (you have to eat, drink, rest, wear appropriate clothing, etc. Tactics include wind direction, true sounds, fatigue, high ground, fighting into the sun, etc.)
- Destroyable/buildable persistent world where players can actually affect the map
- Player-run economy, with vendors and crafters, etc.
- A reputation system to categorize and control mass-murderers (pvp griefers) and make them "free kills" for others and they're outlawed from civilization until their PvP kill count cools down and they can re-enter society

I'm no programmer, but I'm sure what I want is probably not possible or someone will complain that it's "too hardcore." But it's my wishlist!

Id like to add an addition comment to this...  Posting or looking for people to help on MMORPG will lead to the money issue.  If you havnt noticed the community here isnt the greatest.  I would 'for now' just say the project is fun and for a learning experience.
