Hello,

I have some questions about actually getting into the gaming industry.  I'm 32 years old, Active duty US Navy.  I been in the Navy for 13 years now and plan on retiring at 20 years.  I have an A.S degree in computer systems and plan on going back to school for my B.S degree.  Since I deploy every so often, i have to do most of my school online.  Do any of you recommend any online schools that are pretty good?  I'm  interested in a Production or management type position.  Coming from the military, I believe I can be beneficial in leadership and management.  What should I focus on in school?  Do I have to know somebody to actually get a job in the gaming industry?   I just want to finally get involved with something I love when I retire from the Navy.  I will still have to start another career path once I retire, so i might as well do something I have enjoyed since I was a kid.  Video Games.  Any help you can provide, it would greatly be appreciated.  Thanks.

The only difference between a Troll and a Fanboi is which side of the fence they stand on.

The first sets of programs I ever built in C++ were when I was in the Med on DDG-57.  I'm not sure what type of ship you are on, but 13 years you must be at least a First... if you're on a larger ship I know you get plenty of time off as long as you're not a DL.

Learn as much as you can now.  I suggest over the next 7 years you take part in all the different facets of game development.  Start with something simple like programming or art.  Work your way to full fledge design... good design exercises are to write a design document for an already existing game, it keeps you from making amateur mistakes like writing "like it is in *insert game here*".

Work your way through all the different facets so you could potentially manage anything, including the whole project.

Good luck, and thanks for sticking it for the haul.

PS: what's your rate? (just curious)

Hey thanks for the reply.  I'm an AZ (Aviation Maintenance Administrationman) on shore duty in Oklahoma with a year left before I go back on sea duty.  I see these game design schools being advertised on TV all the time and was wondering if that was a good way to go?  I mean of course I have Tuition Assistance, but some of those online schools are costly.  Thanks for your iput, I could use all the help I could get.  Its scary because I was never really good at programming in High School.  I took Pascal, Fortran back in the day and just did terrible.  So I hope it changed since the 90's.

Check out this link....

Actually that whole website is a wealth of information.  Look at the beginner forums.....someone asks questions similar to yours every day or so.  Additionally it is frequented by programmers/developers and the info in the forums tends to be fact vs opinion.

One of the mods there is starting a workshop on C# on 7/01/2007, something else you might be interested in.  I believe C# and XNA are going to bust open the game industry.  It's a remotely new SDK (software development kit) released by microsoft to create games for windows and the Xbox 360.  Both Visual C# express and XNA are free from Microsoft.

Check these out too....
