Not sure if people are more upset over the NGE or the fact that SOE rolls out games before they are ready.  I will say this.  If they roll out this game before it is polished it will fail.  No one is going to wait for them to fix it later.  Not going to happen ever again.  Take the up front hit to the bottom line and get the game right or don't release it.  If it is released before it's time we will call it out as such and to the parking lot you will go.

No BS about "MMOs are never finished."  That does not cut it.

SOE has no control over setting the release date for the game. They also don't have control to change any part of the game, so if something like the NGE happens, it is FLS's mess up, and not SOE.

Make no mistake.  SOE controls the release date and it will be according to getting their return on investment.  Don't be confused that this is an SOE game.  FL may be a good set of guys and made a good product but this is an SOE game now, not FL.  SOE.

What investment is that?

Only SOE knows the details but I would imagine that setting up the network, servers, hiring people to staff and monitor it is not free or cheap.  If the game goes bust, SOE is left holding the bag.

Plus I would think there is some development work to integrate with the station launcher, set up the web character website, etc.

So SOE has (as in present time) set up the network, servers, hired people(?) without gotten a release date from FLS. You saying that hey now we are done where our game? That would be like the pizza guy showed up without me ordering it in first place.

And uhm they get their fair share of the subrevenue just to do that in the end.

I ask again what investment are you talking about?

Servers are being handled by FLS. Billing ,marketing and customer service will be handled through SOE as well as the launcher. That's it. If anyone is familiar with Platform Publishing you would know it is SOE's new way to mass market independent studios games and have no control over the game content whatsoever. A'la God's and Heroes and Vanguard(which went horribly wrong, but the game rocks still).

Actually CS is going to be in FLS's hands:

MPOGD: Congratulations on finalizing this deal! I know that it’s been in the works for awhile. Can you give us general details of SOE’s involvement?

Williams: Sure. We’ve handed over the delivery pieces to SOE, which are retail distribution, localization, marketing, billing, and the launcher. We handle building the game, running the game (the actual servers), community management, and customer support.

Sorry to disagree here, but Sony isn't running our servers.  They're not buying the hardware, setting up the network, hiring staff to monitor it, or anything else.  We're running our own servers, both in the US and in Europe (the areas where SOE has distribution rights).   And just because there hasn't been an announcment to the public doesn't mean that FLS and SOE haven't been discussing the release date!  It's not like you can run a marketing campaign without knowing the target release date.

Of course, this being software, it's possible that the release date will slip.  But Sony would much rather we slipped and released a solid game than release before we're ready and tank.  Sigil (and I repeat for the people who keep saying otherwise, SIGIL) picked the release date for Vanguard.  Sony wasn't happy about it, because they knew the game wasn't ready.  But Sigil controlled the release date and chose to ship because they were broke.  Sony has been doing their best to pick up the pieces from that fiasco, but they have no interest in our following Vanguard's lead.

Much as it might surprise some people to hear it, Sony would actually prefer to have a successful game and make money than not.  I know, I know, it's hard to believe that a company might want to make money instead of go broke, but it's true.

WTF is a pocket monster?!? Think about it for a while.

This thread needs to end. It's getting out of hand IMHO.

First off...you became my new favorite person for that last sentence.

Secondly, i must admit that I'm surprised that a higher up from a game company is coming to the boards and interacting personally. It's actually kind of nice to see. I have high hopes for this game. At first I was not interested at all because i thought the whole pirate thing wasn't for me, but after reading through the site I'm actually excited for this game. I was really worried when I found out SOE was involved but after reading the little Sony FAQ you put together I'm actually hoping this game becomes incredible.

You should make a new thread with this information. Its highly informative but probably wont be read by many this deep in this thread.
