Originally posted by eks Agree, there are several wonderfull ones to choose from, most obvious the legendary Fallout setting, though I can imagine a setting with less convenience, like Ergo Proxy, Chrono Trigger or even the recent Resident Evil: Extincion. BTW anyone noticed the date of the OP? :) Subscribtions: EVE, SWTOR Female Dwarf player: WOW, VG, WAR, DDO |

My choice would be High Fantasy followed closely by Sci-Fi. |

"Low fantasy is an umbrella term, describing various works within different sub-genres of fantasy, to contrast specific works with high fantasy. As such, it can indicate fantasy that tries not to emphasise magic; fantasy set in the real world; fantasy that contains realism and a more cynical worldview; and dark fantasy – among others. A prominent example of low fantasy would be Robert E. Howard's Conan the Barbarian series.[citation needed] These stories take place in a pseudo-historical setting and, while they contain powerful examples of magic, fantasy elements are rare and dangerous with no fantasy species, such as elves or dwarves, at all." ____________________________________________ |

Snap! I cannot bear to play yet another generic high-fantasy MMORPG. As well as innovative game-features that has an impact and measurable effect on how one plays a game, I'm really spell-bound by setting. The best setting that I have seen (from an armchair perspective, as I nearly, but never managed to play the game) is Saga of Ryzom. The game looked beautiful, and managed to merge fantasy and sci-fi artwork / feel into an hauntingly original hybrid. The only game to appear on my radar from a game-play innovation perspective is The Chronicles of Spellborn - but yet another fantasy (if more medieval) setting. *** see addendum below *** The odd thing is that until Peter Jackson's LoTR adapation, Sci-Fi - in cinema, but especially television - makes Fantasy to be the archetypal red-headed step-child. Yet that trend is completely reversed in the video-game market. I too, have fallen in with the herd. My first love was EQ, I then had a subcription to Eve Online on 3 separate occasions over 4 years, played AO for 2 weeks as a Froob, then played EQ2. If I look at my single player RPG games I find Baldur's Gate, Morrowind, yet I still haven't experienced Deux Ex, The Nomad Soul, et al. I still have the DNA of a 14 year old D&D player in my choices! Go figure. Regards, *** Just discovered Fallen Earth *** "If you think I'm plucky and scrappy and all I need is love, you're in way over your head. I don't have a heart of gold or get nice. There are a lot nicer people coming up. We call them losers." |

I am waiting for a good freelancer-ish MMO with a reasonable death penalty and consensual PvP. I like the idea, just not the execution of the current space games. |

Lately I've been feeling like we really need more sci-fi games. I mean, with space travel and all that, not just a futuristic looking gameworld. Playing the different pirate games, I've found myself thinking this would be so much cooler if these were space ships. We've got EVE, of course, but that's a niche game more for its gameplay than the setting. Was also recently thinking it'd be nice to see a real urban setting in an MMO. The big metropolis, or even megalopolis, where it's all entirely within the overwhelmingly huge city, from safe market districts full of NPCs, to dangerous ghetto areas, with some sort of sci-fi spin, cyberpunk, coruscant-like, or whatever. I know that's been done a little, but not much, and not very well. When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world. |

Originally posted by Riotgirl My problem with SciFi is: the atypical sci-fi mmo is still limited, due to little imagination, to 2D characters (bipedal). Course, while there are a plethora of fantasy races that aren't just a human with pointy ears, the programmers tend to not deviate from the "EQ" model ("Who would want to play a centaur or Naga?"). Now, I like both settings (Scifi can make new races, and fantasy can have fantastic race settings), but I simply grow weary of the EQ clones. Right now, I split between Myth War and Fiesta Online, but am watching for a real fantasy MMO. "Of all the things wrong with today's RPGs, 2D characters on a 3D background is the worst." |

Picked the sword and sorc one based on the assumption DAoC is also in that category. I don't play it anymore but it was my favorite during its peak year. I like the fantasy genre all in all but am getting ready for a break threw sci-fi when or if the time comes. Have never played one yet. |

Wow, what a necropost! Half a year old! Either way...I guess I am like everyone else, high fantasy is where it is at. MMOs Played: I can no longer list them all in the 500 character limit. |

You left out some categories that are definately lacking in games, such as historical, business/economic, and probably a couple of others. |

Whoa! This one back on the first page? Ok, at least I didn't bump it myself. :-p
Yeah, I wish the polls could have 15-20 options, but I just had to go with the 10 I could find fair examples for and figured would be the ones getting most votes had all options been included. I might have missed some that would beat at least those with few votes. |

I would love to see a Wild West MMO |

Originally posted by Jefferson81 Definitely correct, and not really surprising numbers. However, considering the number of fantasy MMOGs already on the market, and that a fantasy game will be compared directly with a pretty polished WoW, I think developers will benefit from making something different rather than the same as everybody else. :-) |
