Originally posted by SioBabble Far too boring? LOL. How do you know how AoC is going to work? Do you have a crystal ball, seeing into the future? Do you read MMO players minds? Haha, you dont, so stop making these assumptions. You cant be precise in a video game, it doesnt work that way.....sieges may have lasted for years in real life but guess what? THIS ISNT REAL LIFE!!! lol. Its a video game, and the developers want to make it fun and hopefully it will be. Im sure the bombardment stage wont last all that long so the real PvP starts. But this isnt real life...I mean come on, the whole premise of MMO's are ridiculous becuase of dying and respawning. If you are complaining about realism go ahead and complain about that before you complain about the time length. Rofl. Where are you getting this twisted logic? And also, these "FFA PvP loot psychopaths" would probably put up with that gameplay considering its mass PvP, and last time I checked they like mass PvP.

His post said the same thing you tried to state in that he hopes the developers make it fun and not the traditional or in other words a realistic view of a siege. He did not state the game was going to be boring or anything of the sort. So before trying to post with your lol's, hahas try actually reading what the poster says so you don't look foolish in the end. Then again you just may enjoy being viewed like that and if so more power to you since you seem to be doing it well. |

Originally posted by Ghost12 So tell me, smart guy, what exactly this "siege" is going to be? All I've got to go on is the word "siege". Having studied history, I can only draw upon reality to define the word, and reality is that sieges were usually calculated events that, given enough time, would give you certain victory, provided that the siege was not lifted by some external force (the proverbial cavalry charge that saves the day). Frankly siege warfare, given the nature of MMOs, does not seem to me to be a very dynamic concept to be putting into a game. Old paper and cardboard wargames did sieges, and the games were not popular, because aside from a historical study, there's very little interest in them. MMO players tend to have short attention spans, and a siege is not a short attention span sort of event. I expect the AoC devs have something else in mind than a classic siege simulation, because yes, they'll want to make it fun, and the nature of siege warfare is not what most people would describe as "fun". Sieges were methodically caluclated military operations with very specific, almost stereotypical tactics. The proof will be in the pudding, because unless they've put out a playable AoC siege minigame for us to try, we don't know how it will present itself in actual play. |

Originally posted by Zhauric Really? Okay, first of all before we go into analyzation lets quote it right here so you can read: "I do hope the AoC devs are using the term "siege" as somewhat descriptive of their own unique game concept, and not literally as a siege, because sieges have been described as "mathematically calculated certainty" to execute. This makes them far too boring for most MMO players. Like I said, if you've got some nice little Illiad style side activity going on that gives you some action, well, this sounds great. But historically sieges lasted for YEARS. I cant see the FFA PvP Loot psychopaths putting up with that sort of gameplay." He says that he "hopes that the AoC devs are using the term 'siege' as somewhat descriptive of their own little unique game concept" if you go to read on, he says that the sieges in AoC are going to be really long and boring becuase thats what it was like in past history. It sounds more like hes seriously doubting the developers conceps and that they are going for something more traditional. He goes on to reinforce that by stating that "Like I said, if youve got some nice little illiad style side activity going on...But historically sieges lasted for YEARS" it goes on to reinforce the fact that he implies that the developers are going in a more traditional realistic game concept. He goes on to CONFIRM my speculations by saying that "I cant see the FFA PvP loot psychopaths putting up with that sort of gmaeplay". Meaning that he is assuming that the developers have indeed gone that route. So, I think you should take a scoop of your own medicine before posting a rather quick response such as that. Work on your reading comprehension before you go on posting a reply. What a waste of time. Who is the fool now?

I dont know exactly, dont ask me. But, they did show a quickened version of a basic siege via the demo. It looked pretty cool there. I dont know what else to tell you, I'm not a developer, but they did sieges in DAOC and that came off as pretty fun. Using battering rams, trebuchets, and catapults by players is all quite fun in RTS, and now theyre transferring that over to AoC. But I dont know where you get the idea that MMO players have short attention spans. If anything, they have the longest. What is longer than a boring 4 hour raid in Molten Core? These long raids and instance farming all points to the idea that MMO players if anything have long attention spans and are quite patient, not to exclude the fact that it takes days to advance a character. I think it would go off great. I think alot of players would get a kick out of controlling a treb to knock down a wall and then charging inside. And Im sure that it wont take all that long or all that short, I'm sure they would find a happy medium in the beta. |

I suspect they are aiming at something like the "siege" of Minas Tirith as depicted in Return of the King which was pretty far from the reality of sieges. I mean, when the orc army's catapults smashed the walls of MInas Tirith as if they were constructed of playing cards, that had nothing to do with actual warfare. But then again, regardless of the era, cinematic depictions of warfare have absolutely nothing to do with actual warfare. |
