Well I gotta say! Im really impressed that this game is still holding top position on this site! I was a fan of this game during beta. Havent been able to purchase it yet though (I will when funds free up haha) but Im just really glad its going so strong. Its definately not a game for everyone but Im glad that it is getting the response from mmorpg.com very cool =)

I'm just glad to see that Eve Online isn't #1.

Give some time for the shine to wear off, and the ratings will drop down.

I really think LOTRO is just attracting WoW players who have simply been waiting for the next grind fest.

Seriously though, the way people talk about this game, you get the impression that it's not the repetitive quest grind that it is.

Probably because it's not the repetitive quest grind you pretend it is.

Yes, but it is dropping.

And I just edited my review and dropped it from an 8.5 to a 7.4, mainly due to the very bad CS and the fact that the Euro servers have been down so much. I downrated CS also because Euro players have no access to the Turbine forums.

All MMOs are a grind of one sort of another, this one just happens to be one of the more interesting grinds. It give you a nice immersing story and some good eye candy to go along with the grind.

Back to topic LoTRO deserves to be number one, maybe it will teach SOE and some of the other companies to stop lighting paper bags full of poop on our front porch and calling them games.

Were we playing the same game? Are the quests not "deliver X of this to person Y" and "kill 10 of X and report back to me"?

I'm a huge LOTR fan, and I found NOTHING immersing about this game. But then again, I don't find MMO game's that hold my hand like LOTR does to be immersing. If I wanted something like that, I would play any non MMO game on the market.

Differences of opinion aside, I have a real problem with that sort of blatant lying to people.

Seriously have you played an MMO that doesnt have you plough through fields of enemies on a quest ? or collect a certain number of things? i havent!

The story quests on this are great as are some of the other random ones but ofcourse there ius going to be " kill 12 boards" quests too. What did you expect 2000 different quests all with non repeptitive tasks?

Currently playing Torchlight

There are 2 lines of quests in the game. Normal and Story(Epic). The normal quests usually have an alright at best story line. Somebody needs pillows so kill me 20 birds. Or a neighboring tribe has been fuxing with us so kill 10 and burn down their winter stores. The storyline for these quests is kinda cool if you actually read it. Read, yea I know, weird concept eh? The normal quest chains last anywhere from 1-6 quests while the Story quests are presented in Book form with a dozen or so chapters. These quests are all fellowship quests after the initial couple and carry you through the actual story. These quests are extremely well written and the naration of them is pretty cool. I dont know if your being too hard on the quests, if you don't know what your talking about, or maybe their quests really do suck?>

Only game I can say I've played where it doesn't quest you one after another was Ultima Online before EA started firing all the Origins guys, and the open opportunity of SWG originally prior to patch-6. Hell, i'd like to see games where grinding out monsters is just as convenient as doing quests as to give the option to people, but quests work for the leveling system games have picked up. Yeah, some quests do seem to repeat because there are so many limited things to do within an MMO regardless of what game it has been so far, or hell even games like DarkFall who claim everything that I can only pray hits stores sometime within the next 10 years.

LotR:O brings a unique feel into quests with the Book and Chapter quests, and I believe that this allows for a little more immersion than any other game currently. For all those crackin on it have you tried a book to see how it completely differs from any other MMo quest storyline chain with the ties towards Lord of the RIngs?

There are two types of quests in LOTRO, one is the grind tasks that npcs assigns you to do. The purpose is in order for your character to grow in strength. Give me one example of a level based game that doesn't have any sort of grinding. Level based games go hand in hand with XP grinding. That's just the way it is and i don't think that the basic XP system is gonna change much 10 years from now. Where LOTRO really shines are the epic storyline quests. These quests tie in heavily with the Lord of the Rings storyline and actually have you participate on things that move the fellowship story onward (example: You will be tasked by Strider to go ahead and clear the way for Frodo, etc.)

I can bet those who complains about the XP grind doesn't even bother reading the quest logs (which are full of great little storylines by themselves and give atmosphere to LOTRO) then they just summarily disregard the game as just another grind game.

Seriously, if you want to prove that your argument carries merit then state what you don't like about the game and defend it. Arguements like "It's just another grind game." or "The game doesn't have any story" are weak and false at best. The game is full of atmosphere and lore if you even care to bother to read about it.

Ultima Online is a heavily skill based game. Saying that there's no grind involve is outright false hood as the game DOES have a huge amount of grinding but most people circumvent that via bots and UO macros that automates the skilling up process. The amount of time to max out your character 7x GM without using any botting or automation software takes probably twice as more time than going 1-50 in LOTRO. People saying that UO has no grind is outright lying and you know it.

It all comes down to diversity....not everyone is going to like every game out there. Not to mention we all come with our own preconclusions that weigh heavily on our choices.

I've played many mmos since 1999 after starting EQ. Lately there really isn't anything out there that holds my interest. I hope that changes.
