I have a question.

I am a very big fan of really huge game worlds.  I was wondering which MMO is truly the largest as far as their game world is concerned?

I am not interested in whether the game is a good game, a mediocre game, or a poor game.  I don't care which genre of game it happens to be.

Just from this one single feature, which game is truly the largest?

My top four would be (in order):

1.  Dark and Light

2.  EQ Live

3.  EVE Online

4.  Vanguard

Any input would be welcomed.

EvE of course! I mean it spans entire solar system, those listed below barely contain one full planet ;)

In all seriousness though how would you define large? The time it takes to get from one end of the world to the other? A measure of how many new zones you can visit in the course of leveling or gaining skills? Something with just a huge amount of content that remains interesting to explore?

Good points.

I *guess* I am thinking along the lines of time and distance;  to go from one side of the game world to the other.

Eve is the biggest, but also the most bland. Wallpaper FTL

Assuming we're on a "world" (ie. completely omitting EVE from the discussion) are we staying on roads? Taking a straight line, point to point, climbing mountains and swimming lakes to do it in the shortest time possible? What if there is impassable terrain wherein the landmass may be physically smaller but because you're unable to take a direct route, the travel takes longer?

I'm more interested in studying the actual size of the world, such as has been done with Azeroth and the release version of Middle Earth in LOTRO. And also comparing that with the "content" in the world. Azeroth is jam-packed with mobs; they'd have a helluva time putting player housing in WoW, there's just no extra "blank" space for it. Vanguard on the other hand has a huge landmass, will take a very long time to travel it, but it also feels empty (or does it feel vast?) because of a distinct lack of anything going on. Middle Earth currently has been measured to be much smaller than Azeroth, but you can't always take a direct line from A to B, so does that affect our perception of its relative size?

Eve probaly takes the longest as well but auto pilot shortens that and makes in an uneventful flight. Its space I mean there ain't much to see. It still remains a beautiful game of course though ;)
For exploration addicts I'd recommend get oblivion download a good number of mods including all of the unique landscapes and have fun. Its not online but that game has some gorgeous art to explore.
Guild wars is honestly pretty freakin large too it contains 3 huge maps with all 3 expansions and all 3 are very different and unique. Guild wars ain;t for everyone and not too deep for those who are happy to rp
WoW's world isn't too large but they throw so many easter eggs, referances and things to see it keeps it interesting to explore.
I know those arn't your list but they are kinda interesting to see. Gotta run to eat, more after.

Well I suppose I mean travelling along roads, and discounting zoning times (for those game with zones), but not including the short-cut types of 'public' transport such as teleporters, or balloons, or griffons etc.

There is no place like 127.0.0.1

It is pretty old but Asheron's Call had a pretty huge world, then there is Lineage II as well. But my favorite game to travel in would have to be Final Fantasy XI with a huge world i just love it. Although there is a game you can look forward to with magnificent terrain and wolrd interaction, which i am looking forward to most, Aion.
