To learn how to use a sword, one must first master when to use a sword. |
The time period that makes the most sense is that of the New Republic, after the movies ended. The reason is that (my speculation) people want the Galactic Civil War era. They want the the empire with the stormtroopers, and the people from the original trilogy fighting against them. People also want Jedi, however, and it is the stupidest thing ever to make Jedi available during the Galactic Civil War. It simply isn't canon, and when they make an MMORPG from a preexsisting IP they should do their best to follow the reality that has been made. So there you go, two factions, New Republic and Imperial Remnant. They need to make Jedi rare somehow because the are the chosen few and it doesn't make sense to have a bunch running around. Like have anyone be able to make them, but the only way to level them is to stay in the temple and train, and it takes forever. |

SWG pre cu/nge wanted! |
Originally posted by andeemann10 Of course we want stormtroopers and galactic civil war. One thing SWG did right was to time the game in the right period. KOTOR is completely uninteresting setting. They might as well make any random sci-fi mmo then. I really hope the next mmo will be based on the movies or just after. Personally I want them to be based on the Order66 period just like the upcoming tv series. What the next SWG mmo really should do is to make jedis hard to get. Simply making the grind really really hard wont be good for the game. It is not about how hard it is to unlock or how hard the jedi grind is. If they want them in the game they should only be open for people willing to shell out 100-200$ and another 50$ pr month. That will limit them. Another possibility is to make them randomly selected on the server, a few every month. Just enough to make an encounter possible but not frequent. I really dont mind UBER jedis if they are really rare. It would make an interesting challenge to meet a real strong character when you are say, a commando or bounty hunter. The key to jedi really is to have them in the game for the AWE factor (npcs wouldnt be the same) and to make them really rare and powerful. This way everyone is happy. Well almost, there will always be whiners. But making certain random accounts forcesensitive could be really cool. Even they could make them forcesensitive with different potential. Say some are little powerful, some medium and some very very powerful.. for diversity.. Also to play a jedi it should be limited so that the player can not have any other characters on that server! Anyways I dream of the day where they will make a new SW mmo. SWG pre cu and pre nge was an awesome but bug-riddled game. I laugh at all the people who wants pre nge and pre cu servers because it would be hell on SOE and a financial abyss. The best thing they could do at this point is make swg 2,0 and bring in the diversity. The second best thing SOE could do is to hire 200 people to update the graphics and the game, bring in more of the old professions, do what I said about jedis above (and let all level 60+ jedis stay and wipe the rest) and put in shitload of graphics, missions, content, monsters, details. It might cost SOE a fortune but it would REPAIR THEIR IMAGE. It would actually be a really sound business move to invest in the community and make the game GREAT AGAIN. They could do it if they had the balls ...

I say start fromthe beginning when jedi used swords and let the whole huge awesome story play out. imo the snore part of the lore were the movies. Before and after the movies were insane |

I think the timing for SWG was just right, In the middle of the classic era, just after the destruction of the first Death Star, but before the battle on Hoth. Explained why main characters could be where they were in game. First off the game was really good, was probably released 3 months to early as it still had some major bugs but it was a very good game alot different from the other MMO's out at the time. What started to kill the game was a few unbalanced proffesions and defence stacking templates that were more powerful in combat (not unbeatable, but coming up against a TKA/Fencer or a Combat Medic/Rifleman was not an easy win fight). Then SOE spent three patches, introducing, then buffing, then nerfing and adding content for Jedi. For me this was the start of the decline. Every man and his dog knows there were only 3 jedi in the classic era, The emporer, Darth Vader and Yoda. Going by EU books and games there were also a few force sensitives around but no one until after EP6 would be able to train them. So having the majority of most game servers actively grinding away to obtain the overpowered Alpha Class at the detriment of all the good stuff in the game ruined the initial good concept. The solution, Jedi could of had a place in game, unlockable factional npc characters would of been a much better way. The whole of the Imperial or Jedi factions had to work together to achieve a set number of goals, upon doing so, when the next big pvp battle started up, random roll, if passed, Darth Vader turns up on the side of the Imperials to greatlly benefit them in the fight. For the rebels Luke might turn up with his fledgling powers, maybe accompanied by Han and Chewie, so you have 3 less powerful guys on the reb side. Would of been easy to do, would of been alot of fun trying to take down Vader or Luke and more importantly would of been keeping with the lore. SWG, pre CU, was a fantastic concept the went badly wrong, whether or not it was having to please people by allowing them to play jedi, or constantly having to keep plugging in movie tie ins. Then the was the whole CU and then the NGE fiascos that ruined what potential the game had. SOE did alot of good stuff that fostered a great bond of community, hence why there's so many guys still pissed off after all this time. Player Cities, great Crafting you had to really work at to get the best results, world events like the Cries of Alderaan that while only giving a silly little buff to the winners, got whole servers trying to win for their faction, alot more of these would of made SWG a competitor to WoW. JTL had potential to really get the game going, but was majorlly lacking in content and again left you with the impression it was only half finished. To summerise for the guys who hate reading long posts, SWG lost it's way, at the very start, while installing it says that the game was to tell the greatest Star Wars story ever told....yours. It wound up trying to make you play a watered down version of Darth Vaders or Lukes. For me SWG was not about telling the story of Darth vader mkII, it was about filling the stuff around the main story, third stormtrooper from the left, what was his story before he got blown away, who's the guy who's flying that Y-Wing away from the Death Star, where'd he come from. There was alot of places to go with the story with affecting the lore, unfortunately we wound up with jedi wars, then CU then the awful thing they call a game these days. Who to make a new one, any company who can overhaul the original concept, balance what needs balancing, cut out the stuff that didn't work, add in some of the newer, better ideas (nge does have some good things, quests, pvp focal points) and bring back the great community that was sadly lost and broken along the way. |
