Right now I have a beginner knollege of c++ and a pretty good knowledge of java, like I can program Windows apps etc. I was just wondering what i should do to best help myself get into the industry in my later years. ie- What would the best language be to know the most? etc.

Well, to the best of my knowledge, C++ and C# are pretty much the 2 that I've heard is most widely used in programming games. It is good that you are learning C++, and I would say get yourself very very familiar with C++/C# knowledge (in fact they are based on C language, and you should know it too.)
At least that's what I've learned and still doing (I started learning C++ in high school also.) I'm GSP (Game and Simulation Programming) student in DeVry University, so from what I seen in school, C++ and C# are most useful in game programming and such. Java is good to know too. Anyway, good luck to you. P.S. If you even get any chance, go to GDC (Game Developer's Conference) to see what it is about. It'll help you in getting into the game industry. (GDC 2007 was last month, so it is over. But they do have other smaller conferences. You can go online to search for it and see where you can go) |

The only difference between a Troll and a Fanboi is which side of the fence they stand on. |
C++ is still #1 in the industry. Whether you're using it for all functions or not, all engines revert back to it.
Python is another popular one. If you know C++ you can learn Python in a weekend basically. Most Scripting languages for game engines (Unreal Script, Torque Script, Hero Script) are, for lack of better terms, Python. Lua... but like Python, Lua is simple to pickup if you know C++. C# and other .NET variations are sometimes used for Tools Programming, which is entry Level for programmers in the industry. Good luck! |
