Last week, Managing Editor Jon Wood attended a small press event at the Turbine offices in Westwood, MA to look at the upcoming MMORPG, Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar.

Last week, I attended a small press event at the Turbine offices in Westwood, MA. With Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar gearing up for their "World Tour", which I will talk a little bit more about shortly, it seemed like a pretty good time to get a clear look at what exactly Turbine is up to in this adaptation of a classic story.

To start, I should probably clear up a little bit of lore surrounding the game. When you look at the title of this game, the Lord of the Rings part is fairly self-explanatory, it's the Shadows of Angmar part that, if you're like me and enjoyed the books and the films, but have a shoddy memory, you're probably not quite sure about.

Angmar, as it turns out was one of the kingdoms of Men, led by one of the kings who took possession of the original rings. As even casual fans of this franchise are aware, the original rings corrupted their wearers, and eventually, the King of Angmar became the Witch King (the leaders of the Nasgul, or Ring Wraiths). Angmar, once a goodly kingdom is now a place of evil.

You can read the whole article here.

Yes, a very nicely done article.  One correction, the lifetime membership is $199, not $299. :)

Its 200 for the pre order people and 300 for people who dont pre order is what there saying. The game is awseome but the conjuction crap is a pain in the @ss it really ruins the game if you want to join a fellowship and do quests who ever has the conjuction thing gets reamed and harrased to do one every 2 seconds. A conjuction is bascially simon says type of deal thrown into the game. A player clicks on one and then a box pops up with 4 colors and u have to choose a color now theres a ton of variations and if u can eat spagetti and ride a bike at the same time u can pull this off lol. No one is ever happy with it and u have to listen to people whine about why didnt u hit this color. Other then that ill be opening my little hobbit cafe

*Games on our site will be treated just as we treat people. Unsubstantiated comments about specific or general games will be penalized in nearly the same way attacks against people will. The exception is that you can say mean things about games provided you back it up with reasons.
Example: "Game X sucks." is not a legitimate comment. "Game X sucks, because..." is acceptable.

In the land of the blind the one eyed man is king - LAST OF THE MOHICANz

top notch article and has convinced me that my pre-order is not a total waste of money...YET! I also like the idea borrowed from Guildwars in that there will be cinematic scenes as part of the game. Glad the Angmar deal has been explained although setting it after the LOTR trilogy would have been smarter. Got a feeling that the crappy combat system will limit this games' longevity but time will tell.

My apologies.

The price for the lifetime membership is indeed $199, not $299 as the original draft stated. The correction has been made in the article.

There seem to be some interesting innovations with this game.  And they're the sort of innovations that make you say, 'Hey that's sounds cool' as opposed to 'What the heck?' :)

I really like the idea of the game blog and wiki.  I'll have to check out the Youtube recruiting vids too

While I also think it might have been better to set this after the trilogy, I guess Turbine wanted playersto be able to interact with Gandlaf and Elrond and such.
