Times are changing and the games are now starting to outstrip the capabilities of current mainstream hardware.

To fully enjoy the next generation games you will need to upgrade to C2D, or Brisbane(AMD quad core) & Nvidia 8000 series, or the upcoming ATI R600 cards coming out in April.
The Brisbane will be coming out around mid 2007 and will have unparalleled physics processing power.

QQ all you want about Rediculous hardware requirements IDC, The Pentium4 architecture is 7 years old, the Athlon 64 is 5 years old, Nvidia 7000 series is 2 years old, ATI 1000 series is 1.5 years old.

Jesus frigging christ ppl BUY NEW HARDWARE FOR THE BRIGHT AND SHINY NEW GAMES. They are called next gen for a reason. Buy next gen hardware. or invest in SLI/Xfire.

FYI all the big textures can be better loaded from a performance oriented Raid setup. it helps eliminate Hitching.
I agree with everything you said other than the RAID thing.  It is proven that for single user gaming/workstation environments that a single fast hard drive with a small FAT OS/gaming partition at the front of the hard drive is equivalent or faster than a RAID 0 array at half the price.

What about a couple of 15k raptors in a raid?

Actually, battles will range anywhere from 1 vs 1, to guild battles, to 100 vs. 100 player battles.

I have NEVER seen 100 x 100 advertised for this game, and with the graphics in the high end as we see here, I highly dought that.

Ill believe it when i see it, however, Network and graphics requirements makes 100 X 100 + vehicles and effects highly unlikely.

EDIT: 200 hundred now??? I really don’t think that’s true.

I've seen 100x100 advertised for this as well. the interview is at another site with the developer from GDC.

I have seeeerious doubts that this game makes it live. Most developers can barely handle the lag and latency from point and click. I've never played planetside, but I just have a hard time picturing how a game can be produced that has DOOM 3 graphics, fluid FPS playstyle, persistant world, and 100v100 battles. It seems like either something has to give, or this game will be in permanent beta.

Without CSHD can't see a game producing those screen shots with multiple hit boxes and added function on the rpg side for 100 v 100, just an opinion. In a twitch game I cant see how its possible, but they are not the only developers currenty talking about mmofps on this type of scale so perhaps the technology is there.

But most of us have played simple rpg's in avery crowded areas with this degree of graphics with the required cycles and have seen the laggy results. With an FPS those that load is A LOT LOT more.

Still here's hoping.

Yeah, it seems like there are 10+ MMOFPS games that will be released in the next year.  Yay, a welcome change from the high fantasy carebear crap we have been spoonfed.

I love how people claim they know anything about Networking (aka Network Programming), and especially go to the lengths to say a well funded corporation with professionals cannot operate and know their own specifications for their game. I believe every word you say.. yep, why don't you go play your Halo video games and claim you know anything pertaining to Network Design or even as far as Game Design.. yes I have a feeling you will claim that also :)

Lesson learned here, playing video games does not give you experience in Networking.

Thank You. :)

So, you have seen these battles, experienced them? What’s your computers specs? What frame rate did you get? How many of the high resolution player models were on your screen at once?

Seems you know first hand, as you have not given any examples that it is possible, and working. Where as i, and many others in this thread have the common sense to be wary of a companies claims. I gave my reasons for my comments, where are yours?

Anyone with even the tinniest knowledge knows that a FPS shuffles more data through a connection, faster, than a RPG with a cue based combat system. Compounded by multiple hit areas, equipment "slots" trajectories, vehicles, presumably the ability to jump, an inventory and ammo count.... That’s a crap ton of info being shuffled forth, and in a FPS, Packet loss is very bad, as well as ping. Seconds, and Milliseconds matter for game play.

Now, top that off with Doom/quake 3 graphics... 100 x2 Quake quality (Large texture maps, Bump mapping, Secularity, Normal mapping, and included shaders for effects ETC) on your screen.... Yeah.. Even the original Quake on a top end computer cant support this. Even if you lower the number to 20, i se most computers have issues with them, not even including the environment.

So, unless the areas are just so large, your chances of encountering 2-4 people in the 100 x 100 battles must be low. Because there is no way that they can support that many players in LARGE SCALE battles. No ones computer will be able to run it... Not the average gamer that is, and not even the Quake enthusiast that runs the single player game well.

So, instead of attacking me, why don’t you show me your proof that i am incorrect.  The only part that i was incorrect was the advertisement of 100 x 100 players, witch, I don’t believe, and all i had said was I had not read that. I guess because i had not read that, my points and concerns are invalid. { Mod Edit }

Im in, but... these comments of next gen graphics... forgive me if Im wrong, but arent they designing it off the Doom 3 engine? I thought they were for some reason...

Quake 3 Engine.  They mention it in a live demo from 2005 on gamespot.  But Webgen's using their own network code and such so that they can fit 5000 people per server cluster, or 2500 per faction.

EDIT: I suggest watching the vid from 2005.  It's 2 years old, and they point out the design in a guy's hair and some leather armor and it looks damn near close to a CG.

Not sure about the instances and how that's supposed to work.  The only thing I didn't like that they mentioned in that vid that's 2 years old is the scenario that if you're level 5 and a guy that's level 20 wants you in his guild, he can give you kickass gear that you wouldn't be able to get by yourself unless you leveld up.  Not a fan of equipment designs like this, as it removes the ability to play the game without a clan/guild, and you're almost forced into it just so that you can compete with the "kickass gear" that others have.

Hehe, have you seen the videos or screenshots? I would be blown away if they could get those results with the q3 engine.
Gah.  Unreal 3 engine.  Sorry, got my "3"s mixed up. :)  I read what I had wrote just now and was like..... Quake 3.... are you serious?  Did I really say that?

My bad.  Didn't mean to confuse.  When the guy I was quoting said Doom 3, I was thinking of Unreal 3 and wrote Quake 3. :p

So yeah.  It's the Unreal 3 engine.  All confusion aside.  I apologize. :)

EDIT: To Abhinanda: When they talk about the Hybrids they refer to them as "NPC"s that you fight against.

Well I've been looking at Huxley for a little while now. Nice graphic, very nice looking characters and towns. But who ever thinks it's an RPG is very wrong.

If you take a good look at the information out there about it you see that it's like Battlefield2143 with an player trade system added and instead to using an lobby system, they've gone for an 3d version like GuildWars.

All in all, it's Unreal T. with a bit of BattleField 2143 (character classes and player ranking system for access to better NPC seller items) and GuildWars (character trade and lobby systems), hate to say it "but thisn't an RPG in any shape or form, just another FPS with new feature and idea on old concepts.

As an FPS game I personally think it might be worth getting, but will wait to make final view on buy when beta and demo come out.

This is an example of the confusion in mmogs these days.  PlanetSide is not a mmoRPG.  When the point of the game is simply to run around and whack other players, it's not a mmoRPG.

Devs should ignore players who can't tell the difference.

RPG is not a combat system.  RPG stands for Role Playing Game.  You assume the role of a character in game and make the decisions for that character.

Sure, planetside is an RPG.  Planetside has skill trees, character advancement, and different gear you can equip.  How is that different than your RPG?

P.S. Very few people actually roleplay these days.  I wish the industry would stop using the phrase Role Playing Game and start using Character Development Game.

I agree with the above post. Take a golf game. Is that an RPG. Taking the role of a golfer e.g Tiger Woods.

FEAR (fps) taking the role of a combat soldier to kill. An RPG.

YES these are all RPG's.

Planetside where you fight as soldier for army and Huxley will be and are MMOCDG\FPS- role playing games like Golf but with alot of players in which you shoot in first person view.

Games like WOW, 9dragons and Vanguard (hate all of these)  should be classified as different games. I.E something along the lines of MMOCDG's (Character Development Games - This is not a real title for certain games btw, just a good idead) as mentioned above. These are games inwhich a character is developed, skills are learnt etc. SECONDLY it does not matter if an CDG is not in 3rd person view or text based. Im sick of people going ohohoh its an MMOFPS because its in first person view - NO - its because the game designer wanted it that way so you could enjoy the game more.

Lastly, MMOFPS in my opinion, is just an RPG, inwhich you kill someone with a gun in first perosn view with many more online player.

For those who cant read long pasasges:

FEAR, GOLF, RACING games= RPG's (you play the role of someone else)

Planetside, Huxley = MMOCDG\FPS (You develop a character with a gun in your hand in First person view)

WOW, 9dragons = MMOCDG (Develop a character the classic 3rd person view way with grinding and quests etc.)

MMOFPS = Games inwhich you shoot people in first person view along with many more people (Massively Multiplayer Online)

These are my personal views. I grant you yours may be different.
