Originally posted by Dundee It's more than just not being able to smoke, can't really type that much either, nor read. I may be wrong, I may be right, I may be somewhere in between, but I think Social gammers may be negatively impacted by FPS combat. Just something to think about. --Edit- If I could type ether, all the pain would go away

Hmm, maybe such a MMO would be a good idea. Hopefully all those players we DON'T like to play with, the "WTF PWNage" players would go to that MMO instead, and us casual players, PvP players, RP'ers would be left without grief and harrasment and..uh..pwnage.

MMOFPS's won't be technologically possible until hyper speed broadband (30Mbps and up) starts becoming more common, and even then they might not ever work as well as LAN based or single player FPS games as there is no getting around latency (since the internet can't exceed the speed of light in response time). The NGE combat system is proof positive that this is impossible using the current standard broadband (1.5-5 Mbps DSL or cable), because of the impossibility of the internet at that speed amongst the server and all clients to accurately and reliably track actions happening several times per second. Actions need to be limited to one per second, no more, or reliability is out the window. Without reliability, combat is no longer a fair fight. The NGE combat system STILL does not work, but the devs seem unwilling to do anything about it. Anyone making a MMO who is tying their combat system to a FPS right now is shitting money down a toilet. It simply won't work. Please consult a qualified network engineer (such as myself) before spending money coding it. It's worth noting that STO was originally going to be FPS based for ground combat and they changed to traditional MMO "turn" (actually queue) based combat, probably after observing how poorly SWG NGE's pseudo FPS worked. |

Originally posted by wolfmann FPS combat is for the quick fix melt faces short term kinda game for me..Ive played almost everyone of them..But they never hold my attention for hours and hours..I think SWG had it right with the que combat the states, weapon stats(acc,Range AP ect) and what type of profession you were.It was kinda FPS feeling but wasnt it felt very engaging for me and fun believe it or not..It had the right mix of turned based without making me think it was..I kinda like the stats used based on my gear and accuracy rolls and defense rolls determing the outcome. All those elements rolled into a good smooth engine IMO.. FPS combat needs to be smooth and its too fast paced for MMO setting IMO..The two just dont mix well..SWG had something good going for it when it made it appear to be fast paced(old system)even tho it was turned based dice roll system..I guess i felt it was more thinking on my part and it had great animations..With FPS combat its who ever has the fastest CPU GFX card and mouse finger..Blah..With MMO settings its about player skill,Gear Template buffs and a tad of luck...I honestly dont like FPS combat in the NGE its too fast and its clunky..I think FPS combat makes it feel like im playing a game not part of one. Also with FPS combat its a HeadShot insta kill most times this also doenst mesh well in the MMORPG setting.Unless the system allows for dice rolls Acc and such..Even then youd get Lag spikes causing you to be standing one second and 4 seconds later dead..The Que's in turned based still keep up even tho the lag is there..Based on the NGE i dont like The FPS mix doesnt work for me.. |

Castoro is the guy that brought Forcefields and Ninjas to Ultima Online and two of the most damaging expansions to the virtual world, Ultima Online: Renaissance and Ultima Online: Age of Shadows. The original poster describes Castoro very well in his post. Ultima Online was a world, Castoro's ideas and development degraded it into a mere video game, much like the situation with SWG. |

Originally posted by wolfmannI would like to point out that this is not the case for ever player of the FPS genre... Before I got into SWG, I must admit that I was an avid CS player. In fact, I still love FPS games, much for the same reason why I love PvP in MMO's. It's unfair, however, for you to label FPS players with this general stereotype. I'm not sure if you've noticed, but every game, including MMO's, has that sort of player, "SWG" (and I use the term loosely) now more than ever. Sure, there are a lot of those players in your average FPS game, but the remaining player base doesn't deserve that.
