Age of Conan

I know that it will not be a requirement to run this game. However I have heard that without Vista the game will not look as good and not run as well. Is this true and do you think it would really be worth it to go a head and upgrade to Vista just for this game.

Not necessary to upgrade to Vista yet, though it looks like Best Buy is running some upgrade specials in this week's ads. Basically, the advantage of Vista is the DirectX 10 video card compatability, and all those cards are currently $500 plus. Some look like they are going to take up two AGP slots on your computer, and need additional power to run. If your computer is not up to the new cards, don't upgrade to Vista, just upgrade to a new computer. Check out this month's Computer Games magazine, they have a story on the new Vista compatable graphics/hardware.

Vista also uses around a meg of RAM, I'm not sure how this will work with the upcoming games, like AoC. Vanguard seems good on two megs of RAM, but if Vista needs one Meg on it's own, maybe your computer will be needing 3 megs of RAM? I really don't know the answer to this yet, I am still researching it.

I intend to wait about 6 months before upgrading to Vista, maybe try AoC without it and see if it's okay for me. If it is, then I probably won't upgrade.

If I were you, I'd skip out on buying Vista until Microsoft buffs it up some.  It seems that every time a new OS comes out, it's dreadfully slow because MS threw in all these dandy features and didn't pack them up very well, so everything runs really slow.

With the latest speed diagnostic tests, XP is running about 30% faster than Vista.  Save your money, wait for sales and card prices to drop, then think about it.

I would have to agree here.  I'd wait until after the first service pack to get pushed out before I did anything with Vista.  You know it's going to have a ton of bugs in it, driver issues, etc. etc..

Actually... by the time AoC is released, there just might be VSP1 who knows...

I got my new computer last november cause I really needed an upgrade. (CoreDual2 3.2 Ghz oc'd; 2gig RAM; 7600GT)

I specially got a "cheap" (compared to my pc) 7600 nvidia card for like 150 bucks precisely for the reason that the DX10 cards are coming out right now but no (released) game uses it yet..

My personal reasons to get Vista & DX10 graphics cards are:

-The release of a DX10 game that I really want to play.

For me, as a gamer and as a normal computer user, I don't see any reason I should get Vista except for DX10. So by pushing the buying of those two components into the future for myself I safe myself the trouble of A) Using a freshly released OS with possible problems and B) Safe myself money by waiting untill better and cheaper DX10 cards are out.

For people who are thinking about a new computer, I recommend you *always* ask yourself what you are going to use it for RIGHT NOW. For example if you want to run Age of Conan but are able to run WoW fine right now.. Then it's better to wait untill a couple of weeks before Conan(or whatever different game you want to play) is actually released to upgrade your computer.

Also, with computers.. Don't buy "on impulse". Because the technique goes really fast if you do a "bad buy" then you can see your computer be left behind fast again. What I mean with that is, always check all the current options that are currently on the market. (A current example is buying an AMD3800 that is for sale when at the moment the Intell CoreDual2 processors are so much better performance/price wise.)

NVIDIA's GeForce 8600 series brings DX10 without breaking the bank: "Details of NVIDIA's upcoming GeForce 8600 series have been revealed, with the 8600 GT going for roughly $150 and the 8600 Ultra demanding a $180 pricetag."

OP: I dont recommend upgrading to vista just yet, first generation Dx-cards always have issues & that together with a new OS would means lots of work for nothing. Wait 6 months or so to see how good/bad Vista is.

Umm...I think you mean PCI express slots the SLi technology which is NOT necessary.  Some of the Nvidia 8 series are large and take up more room than past video cards but what do we really use those extra slots for anyway?   AGP is dead

1 meg of ram?! I wish..try nearly a 1gig of ram but only if you turn on all the special GUI features which aren't necessary to run windows just make it extra pretty. 

Games like EQ2 and Vanguard can run on less than 2 GIGS (not megs MEGS .. i wish god i miss those days)  but it really runs best on a machine with 2 gigs.  Meaning in the end ya with vista to run everything at super top notch you'd be good with 3 gigs of ram if you could handle it.

I do agree wait till Service pack 1 for vista there's still alot of compatibility issues / driver updates going on.
