I logged onto WoW yesterday just to see how BC was going, stayed about an hour then logged off totally disgusted. In that short time I heard nasty and abusive language, sexual innuendos and bullies shouting down anyone that had a different point of view. Ryzom had a GM monitoring its channels all the time and the atmosphere in that game was amazingly good. I have noticed in Vanguard a little of the Wowishness creeping in, my question is : Do you think we should start demanding GMs monitoring our chat channels or does that interfere with freedom of speech? My own thoughts are, we should because bad and abusive language actually in itself interferes with our freedom of speech. Would be interested to know others thoughts on it.

Before anyone should be able to play an online game there should be a course they would have to take, and that would be to learn how to freaking behave around other people!

Thought I would resubscribe for a month to WoW, logged in and within about 5 mins I had to turn off the general channels. |

Originally posted by ammie The GMs in Ryzom only monitor the help Q&A chat channel (admitedly the only game wide channel in Ryzom). The other channels aren't directly monitored so you'd have to report the bad/abusive language and then a GM will show up in a few mins to take a look at what has been going on. |

I for one would like to see it.
If i sign up to a RP server then i really dont want to see people write "lol" or "pwn" etc. I realise people have difrent way to RP .. but seriusly how hard can it be to do a /laugh instead of writing "roflmao" |

Bad Language is something that never bothers me, or do dodgy jokes or sexual inuendo, unless it is directed at people. These games are for late teens, and if parent's don't have control of their kids or don't care what they are doing then thats their fault not ours. |

I don't think the OP is arguing who is at fault, but what can be done to stop the steady stream of rubbish in the WoW airways. And she has a point. I play several games and WoW is the ONLY one where it's almost constant. And yes, after a while I turn off channels, too although, like Dalmont, those sorts of things don't bother me much. It's the constant stream of it that grates. I don't think that monitoring a public channel in a game is necessarily abusing people's privacy rights. Monitoring a private channel might, but a public channel in a game, just like in a forum, has some rules. Flaming, profane language, obscenity, racism and hate mongering... these sorts of things have no place on a game's public channels, which is why they're against the TOS. These games aren't for teens, they're for everyone over a certain age, including teens.

Do you know how many GMs it would take to monitor WoW? - "If I understand you well, you are telling me until next time. " - René Levesque about the denial NO on the poll to his dream, project and goal. (Free translation) |

Not that I expect it to be done, but for some reason I think Blizzard could afford to hire more GMs. It might just work if they have enough to respond to complaints about that sort of behaviour in a timely manner. If word spreads that it's not tolerated, it could help quite a lot.
