Firefly and the movie were great- I could envision the game being like the Privateer, the old PC title.

"What I mean by this is that sure, there were many people who enjoyed it, especially after the DVD release, but it didn't have the mass popularity of a Star Trek or Stargate."

Star Trek was not very popular.  The only reason it stayed on the air as long as it did was because it was produced by Lucile Balls company.  It only become massively popular starting 10+ years later and you had movied and spin off seried.

Firefly does have a problem.  Its name recognition will not get it that far outside of a small core audience that liked the series and likes mmorpgs.  Further, there is going to be a problem in that the wit and hummor are not going to be in the game because that comes from the main characters.

In order to pull this off I think you will need great developers as well as an experienced mmorpgs team.  Neither of these is likely to happen.  As much as I would like to see a Firefly MMO, I am not sure it will see the light of day.

Can you imagine what I would do if I could do all I can?

Don't under estimate the fans of Firefly. There's alot and Firefly keeps going up everyday. It's the kind of Sci-fi that can be compared with a good wine. It's good but the more you listen to it, the more you taste it's flavour.

I don't think Firefly is going to be able to compete against the big dogs but it's a good sci-fi direction to take for  anyone making an MMO. Face it, Firefly is also a very 1875 western culture and that is another interesting perception to look at. The only thing that made me shiver a bit is the website of multiverse. For a company that tries to present something professional, their website, screenshots and such are very amateur to be the least. Then again, I do not know them but from a marketing view, it's a very bad start if their image is already dodgy.

My point is, firefly is full of potential but I clearly see that the game is going to have a hard time due to poor marketting. Again, this might change in the following months and I do hope it does.

Firefly wasn't cancelled because it didn't have what it takes to be popular.  It was cancelled because Fox botched the presentation of the show by airing the episodes all out of order.

Most American TV shows are like an amusement park -- you can go to the rides in any order and they're just as fun.  Picture watching a random Star Trek episode -- the Captain's Log bit at the beginning gives you all the background you need for the episode.

Firefly is more like a novel.  Imagine picking up Fellowship of the Ring having never read it before and instead of starting with Chapter 1 you start with Chapter 2.  Then you skip to Chapter 9.  Then you go back to Chapter 4.  Sure each chapter is interesting in and of itself, but the true appeal of the book only comes across if you actually read it in order.

The television show was cancelled due to a problem with Fox's inability to find a suitable airtime for it.  It changed several times throughout its first season and because of that, received bad ratings.  When Fox's people saw that its ratings were no good, they decided to take it off the air midway through its first season.

The film, Serenity, proves, though, that the series had the potential to become wildly popular.  It was a surprise sleeper hit in the box office and DVD sales of both it and Firefly have been substantial.  Rightfully so, because it is arguably one of the greatest science fiction films of all time.

The name recognition argument I saw previously in this thread could definitely be a problem, especially since Fox still owns the rights to the Firefly name.   I don't know if they gave Multiverse the rights to the title or not, but if they did, you can bet this project probably doesn't have Joss Whedon's approval, which is going to make it very difficult to succeed, especially if die hard fans want to side with Joss.

A Firefly based MMO has massive potential if done correctly, but Multiverse is not exactly one of the best production teams in the industry.  Their previous endeavors in the MMO world are notoriously clunky and unattractive.  We'll have a better idea of what to expect when they announce who they've got working on developing this thing.  I, personally, am crossing my fingers that it's a few ex-Blizzard employees or something equally promising.

I'm not really up to par with all of the companies that produce/make MMOG's ( Only know a few really.), but looking around on this "Multiverse" site kinda made me feel nervouse about how this project will turn out.

Some of the previous concerns have already been mentioned, so I'm not going to waste time mentioning them, but I will say that even if Joss Wheden has other plans at this time, I really hope he has at least SOME say on how this game will turn out. He doesn't really make games and from some of his interveiws and such, I kind of get the impression that he wouldn't know how to approach developing a good RPG system for it, but I do know he's a great writer, and could probably help find out a way to make the game fun, while still keeping everything in the Firefly Universe.

But if I had a game company to pick to make the new Firefly MMO, I would pick Funcom. With the time I spent on Anarchy Online, I know that they could create a unique and interesting game out of the Firefly universe.

I have high hopes for this, being a large Firefly (And Joss Whedon.) fan. I would even give up WoW to play a good Firefly MMO.

Groovy.
