ok to start out.. i play world of warcraft and i love world of warcraft... but im just pointing out who can beat wow.....

as fair as i seen ..alot of new mmorpgs are comeing out, and non of them are able to rise up and take WOW's crown....but one

i turely deeply think of they done it right and made the game just perfect. with tons of support... i really think Star Trek online could possible take the lead... and take the crown away from WOW.. or come damn close to doing it., with what i heard. and the things people tells me and the leaks i got my hands on...world of warcraft is in for a treat... STO could really take the lead..STO has new things that non of us have ever heard of...i could say a few things but i read a interview from one of the lead makers of STO and he said he wants to keep it in the dark... so i will keep it in the dark... thanks... here is the link to it by the way....

Everyone's different when it comes to their tastes of MMOs.

While I think WoW is "ok" others loves it. It's not really a right and wrong so the topic of will anything beat WoW is very relevant.

Financially speaking, it will be pretty hard to "beat" WoW with a new MMO

Playability, enjoyment"ly" speaking, the answer is different than everyone elses. Personally, I found other MMOs that has already beaten WoW in that aspect.

However, I do agree with you concerning STO. The screenshots look absolutely amazing (providing they are real screenshots and not doctored as similiar to DnL had done in the past).

Other than that, Perpetual has given out very little information since they announced their project in Feb of 2005 so I have no idea whatsoever about how the game will be.  Many, many, many people have their own ideas how the game should be but no one knows for sure.

Check out the interview I did with them back in March of 2005 (we were one of the first sites to interview them here). Pretty much nothing new has happened except for maybe the introduction of 2D linear space combat and a few other things.

If Perpetual pulls off STO and not get stupid like many companies are doing these days, they'll go from an independent game company into a power house.

yeah we dont now much about STO right now.. and myself i like WOW.. but i dont like how the end game about it... you get a raid group of 40... then go get some good items... but most of the time you dont get what you want.. and i hate how you can't solo anything :(.... but dont get me wrong WOW is an freakin awesome game... but i think they could did it a little better thats all...and i think STO has the ability to over power wow.. when it comes out.. the little stuff we heard is just unbelieveable... the screenshots are real and they just  look very nice..... its going to be a good match up......WOW is just pure combat......STO is 50% combat and 50% content... there is going to be lots of stuff for everyone.. and not just for the combat people love to fight but crafters.. and other things in this game...!! wow may be in trouble.. when STO comes out..

Well to beat or rival mmorpg you really got to do basically what they did.Which i keep saying is brilliant marketing.

1)good ads and keep the reviewers informed. Before the mmorpg ads were dismal and mostly web based.WoW got it into the magazines and kept on putting them rather the usual one off.

The press was kept constantly informed and this encouraged regular articles building to release and post release.

2)deliver it regionally.Ok while on paper it looks great to have it all centralized and a global release like EQ2 did it also means you have poorer interaction both thru time zone differences and culture with your international clients. Also i seen many complain about EQ2 poor translation into german for instance.Regional companies tend to have better translators who are more readily avaliable and understand their ground.

For me been british ,i found regional launches to be annoying but seems to work well.DAoC also did incredibly well using a regional launch as did WoW.

3)Never ignore the so called "poorer regions".In the past you would have a north american and western european launch and thats it.You could go to say kiev and you would not see a single mmorpg game for sale there.Blizzard changed all that and saw "virgin" market in places like russia, china ,south africa etc.

Today ,blizzard can boost almost monopoly in eastern european market and a strong hold in china.

4)brand name. You make a mmorpg called "drakoon online" and first thing will be an indifferent yawn and the occasional person ask whats it about.

You say world of warcraft and immediately ears do up  and ppl spam"nice a mmorpg about warcraft!".Getting a brand name attached to your product is very important.

5)must be playable.Pointless going thru all this then you have a terribly buggy and performing product. No matter how good you did on other points this will break the game.

6)keep the game item oriented.Nothing and i mean nothing hooks players more then loot .EQ1 proved this over the years and WoW has used this same principle and done it again. The more loot oriented a game the less the chance a player will leave due to losing all his hard earned loot. This are like real life possessions.

In my time of travelling thru mmorpg i noticed 1 thing ex-EQ1 and ex-WoW players have in common. Its this fond memories (and sadness) about losing their uber geared chars.Indeed i seen quite a few players go back to this games purely because of this as they look on their new semi naked character in another game.

Games like DAoC and less loot oriented mmorpg lack this ability of holding players.Make success highly loot based to hold the troops in!

7)look beyond veteran players. The world has billions of people and 100s of millions playing games. There is always a few million potential clients around the corner.Aim for them!Trying to steal players from one game is much harder and bring in people will experience in mmorpg. This people aremuch more critcal of mmorpg then newcomers.Blizzard kept the game simple and easy to play and attracted the crowd.

8)make pve and pvp an option. Why settle for one market when you can get 2.Just make pve and pvp servers simple!

TBH,long term content or originality really is not as important as all this.Yeah,ok if you got almost no end game content like WoW you will lose a few couple of hundred thousands of veteran clients. But if you play the market well you will bring much more new to the genre players like WoW.

This is very important as this guys have no other mmorpg to measure with.So to them such end game content for instance is how they think it is with other mmorpg .And considering they have to spent many hours to find out this is true in other mmorpg they will not just bother !

Now the question is there any company that has all this things set up?

I think not really.potential runner ups considering they do a good marketting and have a stable game to begin with.

Vanguard- lacks pvp, steep learning curve,no brand name.Best estimate i give it 500-750k accounts

WAR-has pvp, brand name.Hard to say due to lack of knowledge of learning curve. Also EA are notorious for been cheap and might not market this game too well. But on a biased estimate(i love mythic) i say 1-2million.

Might struggle in asian market.Doubt warhammer is very big there.

age of conan-i cannot see this doing so greeat personally .Funcom cannot go on a global campaign with this.I think a good sales in europe and NA but not gonna pass the 500k mark.

star trek online-sci-fi never done well in the past and i can't see it been more then 300-500k subs

LOTR-well lord of the rings is a huge franchise so thats a good start. However, turbine again is no heavy hitter without M$ and will lack a good global campaign. Also their decision to leave out a PvP in the form of RvR will seriously hurt the game.If there was a game for RvR this is it.After all the whole books is a battle of good vs evil and giving people the option to be one or other would have been a strong selling point.

Terbine rep is also in tatters and this will hurt the NA/euro market. They seems to have very poor plans to market it in asia which will also hurt them.

Estimate about 300-600k .

I given all this as my high estimates. But no i see no mmorpg in development that will rival WoW numbers.

I'm looking forward to STO myself, although with some trepidation after SWG. Nothing like an mmo can ruin a beloved story.

I think WoW's a fine game, but I don't bother with or care about WoW's place among mmos. I wouldn't let 'ratings' decide whether I'll enjoy a game or not. For example, most of the top rated games on this site I consider serious snooze fests.

every MMO that came out after WoW launched was supposed to be the next "WoW killer".

most of them never managed to get up to even 10% of the WoW player base.

World of warcraft is just that good, will it stay like this forver? probably not, will it stay that way for at least the next year, i'd wager that it will

MMORPG addict since 1995.

I still feel the only thing that can beat WoW is Blizzard.

I will probably buy STO if it seems good to me, but think about
the average Joe. It is one thing to play a game called World of Warcraft, it is another
to be playing something that has the stigma of Star Trek or  D&D.

Name recognition is one thing, but to get masses playing you can't have something that only
appeals to a certain segment of the population. Warcraft was a great RTS game and had no negatives
unlike some of the bad Star Trek movies.

Back to my point, why do I say only Blizzard can kill WoW? While some may think it is cocky,
they have said that most companies won't spend the kind of money they did in developing WoW.
For all the crashes and loot lag the first week or so of release, they did release a really
polished game. They also took years in developing it. Most MMOs release too early because they need
the income. (Roma Victor anyone?). Blizzard can kill WoW by not making the game interesting enough to keep playing for years. I predict the subscription rate of WoW won't decline until the second expansion. That will have to offer real changes (Hero classes, Guild/Player Housing, new classes, etc) or people will start to loose interest.

As long as WoW continues to keep people wanting to keep playing by dangling that new epic carrot, they won't loose many people to competitors.

agreed WoW is one of the best MMOs put out to this day i think that ultma and EQ1 were the best back in there day in saying that today is WoWs day/few years ... however there is always a newer MMO that has the potincal to take WoWs place i just dont see one as of yet but when i do ill be sure to get back to you

If it is done well and is well thought out (as it seems to be so far) STO is the one MMO that could drag me away from WoW. As most have pointed out, too many MMO's have dissapointed recently, but of they take their time and get it right this could be the one that puts a dent in WoW figures.

BUT! We will have to wait and see. It is still a long way off!

It must be Thursday, i never could get the hang of Thursdays.

It depends what you mean...

If you're talking about the size of the player-base, then no, I can't see any other MMO beating WoW in th enar future.

If you're talking about quality/fun/etc, then I'm afraid WoW has already lost...

I have a feeling that the mmo's of 2007 will probably be cheesy rehashes of it, while Wow will probably be a lot better with the expansion content.  So we'll see I guess.

Well, that's your opinion... I would like STO to not suck and possibly even take WoW's 'crown', as you say, but I still find it hard to believe that the entire Star Trek universe can be captured in one game. Star Wars is easy, their landmarks are recognizeable and it's mostly about a kind of unsecure and rugged environment, you know 'survival of the fittest'. Whereas Star Trek is more concentrated on the utopian perfect society with minimal battles or physical conflict, but very intense politics.

Let's all debate borders with the klingons and defend Data's rights as an android... oooh whee... poor Brent Spiner.

Well, I look forward to see how they can make the game as much unlike the shows as possible while still keeping the essense intact. I can only wonder if they can do it well enough to destroy WoW, though.

On second thought, I don't want WoW to lose it's position as "number 1 most popular happy-rainbow-sunshine MMORPG in subscribers"... you don't want those mid-schoolers to seep into the serious atmosphere of Star Trek and ruin it for everyone.

"Beat" is an interesting choice of wording as WoW is not the best designed mmorpg around (personal opinion, EvE takes that crown), i'll assume you mean "beat" in context of player numbers because the game itself is a pretty average, unoriginal mmorpg fantasy clone with cartoon graphics designed to target a young audience and existing mmorpg players alike (and it worked brilliantly thanks to Blizzards well-concieved gambit).

The problem WoW has is that every new game will drag WoW players away, while other games that have a smaller, more hardcore following for who these newer games won't have the same impact.

WoW is a monster of a game, but so is Lineage 2 in Asia.

Mythic and EA will be looking to take a huge chunk of WoW subscribers with WAR, AoC will rip a large number away, so will Vangard.

Long-term, who knows, short term though Blizzard have plenty of numbers to play with and like it or hate it, WoW is here for the long-run.
