Ron Meiners is hard at work on the task of bringing the dream of Myst Online back to life in URU Live. The Cyan Worlds community manager spoke to our own Aaron Roxby at AGC.

1993’s Myst was an important game, but I don’t need to tell you that. If you played computer games during the 1990s, you most likely were aware of it, even if you didn’t play it. It has sold over six million units to date and was the world’s top selling computer game during most of the nineties, only to be dethroned by Will Wright and his Sims. Developer Cyan Worlds created four sequels, with the main storyline coming to a close in the appropriately titled Myst V: End of Ages. A new, massively multiplayer sequel, entitled URU Live was scheduled to be released in 2003. Unfortunately, that release never happened. Publisher Ubisoft was not happy with the number of players participating in the open beta phase and URU Live was cancelled in 2004.

This is not an unheard of tale in the volatile world of MMO publishing, and is where the story usually ends. The thing about Myst fans is that they are a passionate bunch. The URU community, those that had played the game during the beta phase, weren’t going to let it die that easily. Fans of Myst are by their nature fans of puzzles, and with URU cancelled they faced a though one. How to keep playing URU? Almost immediately, fan-run servers began to spring up. Not only did players find a way to continue playing their game, they began to independently expand it, creating new content to add to the game. Groups of URU players began to recreate their community in other virtual worlds. This phenomenon was the subject of recent dissertation by Celia Pierce.

I personally can't wait 'til LIVE comes out. Good article. Lots of articles on URU bash it around, but this one was unbaised as far as I can tell. Good job.

D'ni Calls, it only costs $9.95USD/month to answer

"Wheres the violence....wheres the bloodspray?!" -Zorak on the Brak Show

I would hope they would re-realease the game too. I never bought Uru, because I just wanted to play the regular style of myst. After playing the demo of Uru I was very displeased with the way I had to control my character.

I did however love the graphics, bgm, voice acting, and character customization. I love the myst series, and playing online would mos'def override any kind of kinks I don't like about single player.

Gunblade, Uru: Ages Beyond Myst is available right now on GameTap, along with the original three Myst games, Myst, Riven and Exile.

I have all the other mysts. 10th anniversary Edition, Myst, Myst Masterpiece Edition and then IV and V. Uru is just one I never picked up after playing the demo.

Nifty! I think part of the reason people often had problems with the controls, is that they weren't the standard MMO/FPS movement controls. So there was an expectation of how it should move, and it didn't. I had just the opposite problem, I started with Uru's controls, and then when I moved on to other games, it drove me nutso trying to learn the new controls. I got used to it, though.

Wow. That's an amazing story ! Kudos to the fans !!

Not a chance I'll ever play this game, though.

A minute to meet someone, an hour to know them, a day to love them, but a lifetime to forget them.

Sorry to hear that you'll never join us.  I'm a fan of Myst from a long time ago, and haven't really ever forgotten it.  Although I wasn't aware of the development of Uru honestly, until just when the original Prologue was starting.  I am so looking forward to going onto Uru Live!

Well done to Cyan, GameTap, and all the visionaries who have brought us this far.  I toast you with my glass!

URU lives! Mystralia date set for July 29/30 http://www.mystralia.com for details.
