"lo bob"

Lately there are too many games coming out that have fees, and you need a credit card for them.(that's all well and good for people who have credit cards), but if you were to make the game so you could have a basic account that is free (like Runescape for instance). then have a members account, then it could give the poorer people like me a chance to atleast explore the world.

please post your ideas thanks.

Orcs have a way of disappearing around worgs and worgs have a way of becoming fat around orcs

Good Idea, thats how Runescape reels in a lot of thier memebrs ,by updating mebers like evry week and keeping F2P the same.Be a good way to experience LOTRO without paying....they could have like a limited time free trial or something at least.

Strength, Courage, Wisdom..which one are you?

Free to play (F2P), while being a good idea for people who may not have credit cards or simply do not wish to pay a monthly charge that can sometimes end up cost way more then the actual value of the game.

But to counter this arguement, the companies who run and matain the game servers need to be making money at the same time. While the F2P system does allow people to explore the landscape and use the basic features, it doesn't encourage the growth of their Members, rather it causes a gap between players who pay and players who play for free.

An example of this would be, take Runescape, Members are entitled to use special armour, much more superior to that of a F2P player. Or also in Rakion, special equipment and summons cannot be used by people who don't pay, giving those that do, a large advantage over other people.

This is turn ruins a game, as I have seen in a few MMOs, the fun you could of had is turned into frustration as players, who maybe be as skilled as the person they are playing against, are constantly being overwhelmed, just because one pays and the other doesn't.

While I don't like the idea of paying a monthly subscription, one method adopted by Arena.net seems much fairer. Instead of paying a monthly fee like in most MMOs, instead you buy the game in the shop, which covers the matainance cost of the game servers, then bring out new "chapters" and expansions, that renews the gaming experience and also allows more money to flow into the company.

This game has become very popular over the last couple of months and is near the top of the charts in terms of popularity and people who play it. I personally also play it as well, and I have never once thought that it would lose out to other MMOs because the money other games would be earning.

Guild Wars was a daring move in the gaming community's eyes, yet it payed off well. In my opinion, I believe that if more games adopted this approach to gamers paying for their games, MMORPGs would become much more popular.

I think continuously paying for a persistant world is a must if we want a dynamically changing world of quality.

Subscriptions are the only way to insure long-term profitability on the scale that these copmanies are looking for right now. While having to fork over dough is always less pleasant than playing for free, it does have its advantages, chief among them is funding for continnued support and improvement. In due course, perhaps LOTRO will have a freebie version like EQ2's Trial of the Isle so folks can get a look at it... but no time soon I would wager.

One other major benefit to charging a subscription is that it is just like a cover charge - it keeps the rabble out. Just think how rank a game would be with griefers if they could join on a whim with no cost. Very scary.

Runescape is a java game, a good java game though I might add, and does not take as many resources to mantain as say LotRO will take. So they can have free servers where you can play pretty much half of the game for no cost at all. I do not think this will work at all with LotRO becuase it will cost them more many to supply the free servers than they would be making over all.

Whether people like it or not turbine have said many times that there WILL be a monthly subscription. Alot of people like to play for free (who wouldn't) but for a game as big as Lotro it is just not feesable, they need to run lots of servers and have good support and this costs money. too many people get their hopes up about free games but the reality is that free games are no way near as good as pay to play games.

The only way thats gonna change is if free games like guild wars can step up the competition to drag customers away from other games. That would be a industry changing event
