A while back, I had thought about getting this game.
I thought the whole super-hero concept was pretty cool and I loved the whole look of the game.
So, I did some looking around and asked a few people about the game.

Alot of people said the game was too limited in terms of places to go and things to do.

In the end, I bought World of Warcraft. It's pretty fun, and I've been a Warcraft fan ever since I first played the original Warcraft game.

But I am still wanting to know how this game is.

I know the name "City of Heroes" should give me a hint about the games world, but is it really just limited to a city as far as exploring goes?
I don't know much about overall things to do in this game, either.
Is it quest based ( Like wow ), or are missions and quest kind of like a side thing for earning extra money and xp?
Or is it something completely different?

Groovy.

Well,i think the main drawback of COH/V is only the mission system, lack of different, from lv 1 to 50,go to there, kill some mob... and there's nothing beside fighting, unlike other game(EQ2/WOW),no crafting system or anything except fighting... however, this game is coool, everyone love the game before 25lv,and the character creation is GREAT!!!!!

For me, City of Heroes will probably never offer enough content. As someone else has put it, CoH is essentially just a well done combat engine, and nothing more. Personally, I'm just not willing to devote the time and effort required to level a character for the sole purpose of fighting. The developers removed the more common aspects of an MMORPG, crafting, fishing, housing, etc/whatever, as it wouldn't fit their theme (and rightly so), but they obviously forgot to put something in their place, and City of Heroes now suffers from a blatantly "shallow" feel and gameplay.

I'd rather just play Diablo 2 for free. :S

I've heard good things about it's character creation and everything.

I've also heard the pvp is crap.

The character creation is the best. No other MMOG come close to it. However there are no loot in the game to customize your character so they have to built one and it turn out to be the best.

PvP is crap because their play testers are amateurs. If the player testers can’t make the best built in PvE do you think they know how to make one in PvP?

Combat is fun but the mission maps are too limeted. Almost every building has the same layout, for example. If they'de fix that it would be alot better as a game.

No crafting is a godsend, actually. And with the addition of Mayhem missions and more customized missions, there is actually a nice variety at times. Most of this is in City of Villains right now, but owning both (like I do) really makes some massive costuming options available. And the team combat is awesome!

The PvP is alot of fun, and fairly well balanced. It is probally the second best PVP I have ever played (DAOC was the best imho). But maybe I just love the fact that I can PvP while fighting in mid air .

I only bought the COV expansion, but I can play both CoH and CoV.  It is odd, but it is true.  Perhaps with CoV, they are making the original free now?

COH/COV are only what they advertise themselves to be. I give them credit for at least doing that. That game has never pretended to be anything else. I haven't seen too much added to the game because the flavor of the moment had it in their game. But yeah it does get repetitive and eventually boring to some. When I get bored I quit playing for a few months and come back.

What it does good is the character creation. The PvP can be a lot of fun. The most important thing to me has been the community. I've played most of these games and to me COH has the best. It's one of the few games you can always find a group in. That has always been the coolest thing to me. A lot of these games have turned people into anti-social something or others. Seems like anymore it's all about soling to people.

Wait for Vanguard- the word solo is a curse word in the eyes of Sigil.

I'd rather wait for WAR where they've said "however you choose to play the game, is the way you can play the game."

But that will mean people will choose to solo,  just like every other game.

If EA doesn't screw WAR up, that is.

I keep going back to CoH and CoV specifically because it has no real loot or crafting systems.

I like taking a break from my regular EQ2 gaming with something that doesn't require me to constantly horde gold, camp mobs for specific drops, repair damaged equipment so I don't become nude, worry about upgrading entire sets of gear every 10 levels (for stuff that may look worse than what I had before), and go on raids that are long, tiresome, and often frustrating in the attempt to garner an item or two that will let you finally stand out among the cookie-cutter populace (all wearing identical gear at your class and level).  Raids especially are what keeps me fleeing EQ2, my friends drag me to them and despite having done dozens of raids never once seeing a peice of equipment for my classes drop ( I played only mages in EQ2).

And crafting, there is rarely anything of value to these systems.  They involve pointless grinding for the most part, and are rarely innovative in any way.  The only time I saw one that was essential was in pre-CU and pre-NGE Star Wars Galaxies, specifically because it was engineered to be necessary.  Drops were always inferior, crafted goods were always superior.  It was completely vital to the game; the economy and everyone's welfare depended on the flow of goods.  But even in that game you had the old grind up in crafter skills:  making thousands of useless things noone will ever buy simply to level up.  Repeatitive and dull.  My last attempt at crafting was in EQ2, and I found it horrible.  Massive grinding.  High level crafters were rare enough, that when you found one that actually did work in a dependable manner, you would latch on to him forever.  I knew quite a few that ran, despite strict forbidance by Sony Online, 3rd party programs that would point-and-click the crafting interface while they weren't playing, to grind out those endless, pointless items to level up so they can make things people actually want.  In the end, crafters are not necessarily those with the greatest desire to experience another type of game, but rather those with simply alot of time to grind (or a suspicious work-around method).

Anyway, I see now I've veered into rant territory, and that was not my intention.  My goal is this- to let you know that for many players, the lack of certain features in CoH/CoV is not at all a deterent, but a solid reason to play it.  I'm not saying its all good, you must understand, but that things like those I've talked about are a nice break from the types of games we've been accustomed to.  (For one thing, I do wish it had more customizability among characters, but I'll leave that to another thread..)
