Don't worry about the past. Look at how to shape your future.

YOU CHOSE your adventure in those games, they didnt choose for you.

You can still choose your adventure in current games.  You don't have to take the fast track to leveling if you don't want to.  Just takes a little imagination and the willingness to find your own fun.

I do, i miss the days where i can just stick with one good MMO game. DAOC is the longest MMO game i have ever played going from it`s release to 2012. I only stopped becouse i can`t play PC games anymore sadly becouse of my wrist.

What you describe is not the same at all.  From what I remember of EQ, there wasn't a true fast track as most MMOs have today. You had to be power leveled in EQ to really be fast tracked.  In EQ it took me months to get to max level and I had good friends that would come power level me all the time.  How many MMOs have been released since WoW came along and made the genre all about easy mode to max level and then raid for gear that can truly say it takes the vast majority of the players 6 months or more to hit max level?

Better yet, how many MMOs since WoW can say they take months to reach max level and have depth, a sense of adventure and wonder that keep the players coming back day after day just because they might discover something new and exciting?   Don't answer that because the easy mode MMO model started by WoW destroyed it.  Yes WoW fanbois, WoW did because it was designed to be an easy as hell dumbed down clone of EQ.  Now every company out there follows the dumbed down easy as hell design trying to get a slice of that money.

Yeah , you can , but alone .

And even if you manage to find player who have same idea with you , then there come the difference between level , items make it impossible to have a journey with other .

Basically , you alone in massive multiplayer O RPG

The difference are , in old game , you search for the journey , other too .

And because the game design make players can overlook the difference and join the journey with other.

Nowadays themepark design ? you are alone

And you know ? lone journey are suck ,

try to walk in long road alone and walk it with your friend to see what difference .

Hmm.

The longest i played a single mmorpg would have to be 6 months, That's not to say i didn't play for many years in those chunks.

Lately, I find i spend less and less time "commited" to mmorpgs, It takes about 1 month and i've grown bored. Maybe that's an age thing? maybe the change in design is the problem.

I actually don't know if i want an mmorpg for "years" now, It's fun to say "Hey i might play x game today". Then again its great to be immersed in a game, I miss that.

8/30/14 10:08:01 AM#106
Well I don't miss it since I have played the same mmo for 2 years now and I am not even thinking about changing :)

$500 Backer to 2015's Top New MMO... The Repopulation!

8/30/14 10:18:51 AM#107

In the days of UO, EQ, AC, SWG and DAoC, your choice in MMO's was limited, so it wasn't hard to focus on just one. As for the quality of MMO's. It's simply gone from content and features to graphics and rewards. Vanilla EQ wasn't necessarily a group focused game, since some classes were designed to be able to solo. This meant you could play your group oriented class when friends were online or switch to your solo class when they weren't. This doesn't mean solo classes were tackling the dungeons or bosses with ease, but you could do quite a bit of content with certain classes or farm gold and rare drops.

Vanilla WoW started out the same way and in my opinion, Vanilla WoW actually made a great EQ replacement. It's not surprise that both EQ and WoW eventually took a different direction with their games. They became less challenging outside of dungeons, more group focused and less adventurous. They became more of a dungeon grinder for gear and exploration became more of a hunt for achievement points.

When I played Vanilla EQ, which I consider vanilla up until PoP expansion. There were so many elements that you had to deal with. Coins had weight as did items, so you couldn't adventure forever or you'd become too encumbered. You also had racial language barriers and racial factions to overcome. Troll SK's couldn't walk into Qeynos and expect to be greeted with open arms. You had to prove yourself before doing so. Also, night time actually meant something, not just a mood setting. When it was night time, you had to look where you were going unless you accidentally ran into a deadly high level skeleton or werewolf that could easily chase you down. You also had focused classes that had purpose and meaning. Warriors couldn't heal themselves on their own during battle. Clerics weren't superb at taking down enemies quickly and thus spent a lot of mana which we all know took forever to recover from. Nothing was more scary than a giant spell book covering your screen while you meditate, leaving your sense of awareness limited to sounds of footsteps.

Why do MMO's lack the staying power of older games? Because the current MMO community are silver spoon and ungrateful kids, hellbent on forcing gaming companies to shove rehashed boring content out at an alarming rate. This whole gearfest nonsense and repetitive dungeon grind as an excuse for an MMO is utter BS.

SUMMARY: There isn't one MMO out there that feels like a D&D game session. MMO's are so far off track from the basics of what the veteran MMO players grew up with that it's more like an arcade game than anything else. I wouldn't be surprised if 90% of the current MMO gaming community never even heard of D&D or used their imagination to the degree that we did.

and now there's so many shiny new titles coming from every corner of the world it's hard to focus on just the 1

No thats not true.

i would still be content with playing 1 title. It's just that everything released is utter bullshit and not intresting to play for very long.

i would love to have a game wich would take me a year to get to cap for instance.

This nails it for me.

That being said, i am still playing Everquest 1 today. Simply because nothing better has been released since it came out.

MMOs finally replaced social interaction, forced grouping and standing in a line while talking to eachother.

Now we have forced soloing, forced questing and everyone is the hero, without ever having to talk to anyone else. The evolution of multiplayer is here! We won,... right?

Well the first MMO I played was Ultima in 98 when I was 11 and played it 3 years straight.

Moved On and played Runescape from 2003-2008 (still played on and off until 2010)

So yes those were my main MMO's I was invested in.

Today I just bounce around looking for a new MMO and sadly and not finding it. As to your question yes not having a main MMO and therefore not getting involved in the community does take some of the magic away for me anyways

People talk WoW this and WoW that, but it never caught on with me. CoH is where i made my bed at since at that point i was lookin for something other then the "Magic,Orc,Elves" MMo. Day one CoH for me, i knew i'd be draining money into this game till it either shut down or i lost a job. The whole concept with the power and costume system is what got me at the jump considering i have a rather vivid imagination and freakin loved super heroes. Even thou basically what yal call "endgame" wasn't really put to the forefront till years later, it meat little to me cause i was always all over the place with new ideas and adding powers and costumes all the time didn't help curb that either.

Another aspect where heroes felt superior at was a combination both our community and class system. You'd be hard pressed to find another mmo where at any random point of you startin out, some high lvl comes runnin up in trade and drops a few mill$$$ on you just because. And because the way our system was built, CoH completely negated the "Holy Trinity". The power system cast Tanks,DPS,Support, etc in such a diverse rainbow that while some were preferred, none were rejected and with a good team build may not have even been needed.

Not needing a Tank or Healer....let that sink in for a min.

Only mmo aside from Tabula Rasa, Auto Assault, and FFXVI where im deep into the story aspect and not just click thru to get thru. Goin thru things i wanted to know who did this, what the hell was that, why did that look like that, wait wasn't he dead????wtf?!?! Hopefully with the things in motion now, i wont have to wait for much longer to feel all that again.

Perhaps tomorrow will be better.

I only miss old games if new games are just crap and so far i have seen a lot of crap flooding this market. Then i see reviews that give these games 7 or 8 /10 and i just lol,i think total bs they are not even worth my time nor could you pay me to play them, that is how bad they are.

Marketing/advertising and sheer boredom will always keep a bad batch of games sounding great or amazing.I am actually stunned that nothing coming out for the last 10 years has been very good only average at best.I know there are a lot of gamer's who don't mind simple linear gaming,i can't stand them and won't play them.

Every-time , and it's amazing how many times I see this SAME verbiage, I LOL and call Bullshit. It's painfully obvious that if approached by a game company to play their game for cash, I guarantee you'd agree without a second thought. So much drama to try and express an opinion. Further, concluding with 'won't play them' basically suggests that your opinion is baseless, since... well... you haven't played them.

On topic; yea, I kinda miss having a single game to fixate on for years. What's changed? Me.

It all depends on the circumstances. I miss playing WoW for all those years, but my kids grew up and it doesn't hold their attention anymore. It isn't as fun for me playing it without them for many reasons. Sure, I could chat with guildmates, but to me it's not the same. So, when they bounce around to other new mmorpgs I usually follow with them. So yes, I do miss it.

Of course. I miss the years and thousands of hours I put into Guild Wars 1. Yes, it's still running, but, with no new content or balance updates, the game is essentially a ghost of its former self (and has been a ghost since approximately 1 or 2 years after the initial announcement of Guild Wars 2).

To return to the game I loved would be to see it in a much sorrier state - and there are no other games which share its incredible design philosophies. I can only optimistically hope (typically to my disappointment) that some new title will capture all or part of what made Guild Wars 1 my favorite game.

I know how the CoH player feels. Or the Ultima player. Or players of the various other games to die with no real spiritual successor. It's a sad feeling, knowing that there is no place for you in the industry.

Home? I don't play games for a home. I play them for fun.

No, i don't miss playing the same game (MMO or not) for years straight. I am much happier to have more variety of games to play, and don't have to "waste" my time on only one game.
