By what indication? How in the world does one decipher it's actual player-base? All of the typical methods are moot int this case.

I'd have to disagree.  Just do a google search of ESO and you can see the countless articles proclaiming the doom of the game.  Even Forbes wrote an article on it.  Search the forums here and see the countless threads of people who have left the game dismayed.  The evidence is there, one just needs to take the rose-colored glasses off to see it.

I could also do a Google search on people who have seen or interacted w/ aliens, been probed, and had rectal examinations on a spaceship and a ton of  "Results" would come up....

I think the point he was making was for estimates from a reliable, PROFESSIONAL source.

Granted that Forbes writes articles on finance, industry, investing, marketing topics, technology, communications, science, and law; they have proven time and time again to be wrong about 90% of the time when they talk about anything that does not fall under the umbrella of the above listed topics.... Including the subtle nuances of video/PC games.

 That is all.

It's just a game, no reason to get upset. Some are going at it like Republicans vs Democrats up in here.

thats because half these people need to go see a psych. Ive seriously never seen so many people in one area who want things to fail so miserably  besides political conventions.  Some people on this site take gaming WAY too seriously.

This article lacks every bit of evidence for... everything. People starting "I have heard a rumor" in any MMO case are the most boring kind of all. Stop it. Give evidence, links, believable quotes or just stop talking. Useless article. This is only slightly better written as every second or third thread in any given fanforum. *sigh*

So someone posted alot of unsubstantiated thoughts.. why should we be interested in this, or give it anymore weight than what we ourselves believe?

"Does TESO provide an online experience that's familiar enough to satisfy console gamers, especially those who aren't serious about MMOGs and whose expectations for the IP have been shaped by the single-player RPGs?"

I don't think so. I'm an mmorpg player and an ES fan. I'm subbed to ESO still and I like it better than any other mmorpg out now.

My son, on the other hand is a console player and a big ES fan, but not into mmorpgs because he doesn't like grind. He was home for holidays, so I asked him if he wanted to roll up a character and try the game. He asked me if it was "one of those grindy games."

What could I say?

This article is nothing but the usual F2P propaganda from this guy hopping on every F2P bandwagon passing by. Unlike other authors, I never saw him post a single reply EVER, which for a "community site" would be enough reason to cancel his crap by now.

I seriously dont know why mmorpg.com still features his rubbish, which is nothing but a constant agenda against anything which is not F2P or asian grinder. His articles were at least mildly entertaining back then when he literally insulted people who weren't of the same "F2P will save the world" mindset he is.

I remember when alot of people got upset about his articles and someone from the staff said that they would look into having more articles that would likewise feature the pros of other payment methods. But for a single "top5 why P2P still rules" or something, of course nothing ever happened.

I guess the F2P lobby pays well.

Of course you can't deny the vast amount of negative feedback on ESO. On the other hand it is always wise to keep in mind that players who like a game usually remain silent and simply enjoy the game.

I see the biggest problem in Zenimax having tried to sell ESO to a broad audience. The game seems to cater to a more hardcore oriented player base. A mix of AvA-centric players aged 30+ with the patience to enjoy the long lasting story driven content.

Having achieved VR7, I still like the game and enjoy the story driven content. Also, currently there are enough players to enjoy the game at full scale. As long as Zenimax continuously delivers content, the game should do well. Even with a subscription model.

Given the nature of the games design it should have been buy to play from the start . I suspect even though it would have had a rocky launch Zenimax could have avoided a lot of the negativity surrounding the game .

They could still switch now and just charge for DLCS . I doubt they will though . They'll try and pull off a console launch first if that doesn't work out well then it'll go free to play sometime in 2015-2016 .

The game is so bad even if it was free they would be over charging. It barely even deserves to be called an MMO. Biggest flop of 2014 with Wildstar as the runner up. Let's hope 2015 is less disappointing.

Go F2P - send more players back to WoW, good strategy!

Had to laugh when I saw this post . What on earth makes you think it would send people back to WoW ??? because they are so fixated on paying a monthly fee ??? LOL

Even after all these years I'm still amazed at the silly things some gamers say .

Can't really judge it based on games like TOR or AOC, etc...

They were titles operated by companies under outside investment, their F2P transitions were based on upping profits to pay back those investments. This is a private company that answers to no one but themselves. IF their income meets their demand they have no reason to change their business plan, it's the same situation as FFXIV:ARR.

Private companies still have investors to answer to. Instead of stockholders, it's a handful of wealthy people and/or investment funds. And in either case, the investors want to make their money back and then some. They will not settle for a weak rate of return when they can experiment with proven ways to generate more cash (i.e., a F2P conversion).

What's more, investors probably see MMOs (that are not WoW) as a 5 year window to make money, with the first two or three containing the greatest potential. As such, going F2P should happen before the end of the second year.

That's pretty much how I feel...Thought the game looked great...There was a couple features I liked...But by and large I was tremendously disappointed...F2P would not change my mind unless they made some major changes...

The day of the Subscription-Based WoW-Clone (or even the WoW-AnythingEvenCloselyResemblingIt) is over.

TESO may have been a heap of garbage, but Wildstar is as good of a game as you can make with that style and already the servers are dying. The vocal minority are the ones who still have an interest in that style of game and even they're running out of patience fast.

It's time for the genre to try something new... because, mark my words, any AAA Theme Park MMO that gets released from here on in is going to bomb. Hard. You can quote me on it. I mean, look at Rift/Trion... it is a Theme Park MMO that's every bit as good as WoW, with as generous of a F2P system as you can possibly make, and they're dying too.

That's right: you can't even GIVE away this style of game, let alone charge for it.

Developers really need to take heed and radically alter the course of any developments going on now that follow this model.

Only silly to some.

"One man's meat is another man's poison" as the saying goes.

Example? SWTOR - F2P... Insta leave, sub cancelled, not looked back.

Sorry that I no time to play with freeloaders or the other scum that jump on F2P MMO's like moths to flames.

So not all that silly, arrogant maybe, silly... no! :)

No trials. No tricks. No traps. No EU-RP server. NO THANKS!

...10% Benevolence, 90% Arrogance in my case!

I agree with your sentiment but I think ESO is on its way to B2P before console release...

I was hoping we would have 2 very successful sub launches this year (ESO and WS) and that it would be the eturn of the sub model in gaming ...I fear the worst now. Honestly ESO has been a failure it looks it (regardless of your like or dislike of the game itself) and I certainly see the only viable path being the B2P model- Although I dont like this nor think its a 'good' thing.

Its the sad state of gaming at the moment...

You keep posting this BS.  Here's the truth:

"Our project is fully funded from now until launch, which is a luxury unheard of in the gaming industry. With our corporate structure, we're very stable and can concentrate on making games instead of raising money.

How are you paying for this?

ZeniMax Media recently announced a
$300 million investment from Providence Equity Partners, and of course the massive success of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and Fallout 3 only adds to the assets that helped fund ZeniMax Online. Suffice it to say, we're covered.
"

That's from http://www.zenimaxonline.com/faq.html... THEIR OWN FAQ PAGE.  If you check with Providence Equity Partners, you'll find they received a significant holding in SHARES.

Zenimax is VERY beholden to investors.
