Well the game wont be that much when its released.. its only that much if you really want to get in and help test the game.

They said during the kickstarter the price was that high because they did not want thousands of peole buying into beta who just wanted to play a game they wanted to get people who actually wanted to test a game to find and report bugs.. people willing to put $150 into a game usually want it to work when released to will gladly help find bugs and make the game better.. if it was say $10 to get into beta then most of those people would only be wanting to play a new game and not test to find bugs.

You are not actually paying 150$ to get into beta.  The game itself if pre ordered is 50$ plus another 50$ for all expansion passes which equals 100$.  Increase the game pre order to 75$ to get into the standard beta , they are in the "first beta stage right now" next phase is "standard beta", for a total of 125$

So to recap

100$ for the game when it goes live along with the expansion pass

or

125$ for the game including standard beta access plus the expansion pass

or 150$ for immediate access plus the game plus all expansion passes.

so really it is a package deal with access right now costing you an extra 25 to 50$ depending on if your willing to wait for the live release or want standard beta access.

So myself I think it is not about wanting limited people for first beta but more about milking for more money.

Source

EDIT: you also have the option to just get the game when it goes live for 50$ but you get no future "expansions" or alternately you can pay 75$ for game+standard beta but no expansion pass.

Essentially, it is 50 USD for Beta access.

50 USD for the game + 50 USD for all expansions that will come in future + 50 USD for beta access = 150 USD for whole package.

I would think that if you are willing to pay a company in advance for their game ($50) and for all future expansions (an additional $50) that you have shown enough commitment to their game to warrant beta accees.

Agreed which I why I feel they are "milking it". Like you I think beta access should be a perk for supporting the game by pre ordering it.

They're not "milking it". It's a continuation of the Kickstarter tiers, just like Star Citizen.

That is the great thing about opinions we can all have different ones, to me spending over 100$ for a game is "milking it".  Also SC had alpha access for cheaper AND they pretty much let people know they were "milking it".

I spent 60$ bucks for a ship + 6 months insurance on it + alpha access + all future content, If I had to pay for the game too I would not have spent any money till release.

The way I see it is a good console game is what 60 to 100$ counting taxes so any mmorpg that charges more than that is "milking it" IMHO.

Feel free to disagree.

Funny how you deliberately leave out the one who actually spent those money out of the equation....

I'm currently playing the Premium Beta, and while it's still very buggy (it is still a beta, actually it's more or less the last Alpha build with a few hotfixes) and we are all limited to a small 'goldfish bowl' of 5 star systems, I'm enjoying it immensely and it shows really great potential

Very much looking forward to the next update (the version shown at E3) to be released, which apparently could be within the next few days

That's the thing about opinions, I am the only one that decides what mine is, there is no one else to put in the equation :)

There was no need to quote this post of mine when I clearly explain it in my next one which you promptly ignore. That said your 1 of 2 in my ignore list so kindly don't bother to respond to me I do not wish to argue and will not click on (show post) again so I will not see it anyways.

Haha I am looking forward to trying this game when it goes live, I feel like they may have an advantage over SC with the star system they plan on using.

I wonder how big the "fish bowl really is when in game" I get the feeling it is much bigger than the small Arena Commander we have access to in SC right now?

Well, you must have seen the oft quoted '100 billion star systems with ~400 billion stars' stat. Well, that's for the entire galaxy. But what seems to have been hidden a bit is a quote from DB that the 'civilised' space around Earth consists of ~100,000 populated star systems, so that's the initial populated goldfish bowl. They reckon it will take 2 months real time to traverse the entire galaxy, if given a properly organised team of explorers (who are organising themselves even now!), so realistically, a lot longer than that. This gives them quiet a bit of time to flesh out some of the other outer systems with non-procedurally generated content and seed hand crafted events etc if they so desire.

Apparently, all of this is in game now, although we can't access it, and believe me, many have tried! Although I doubt that much of this hidden content is of any real quality to play yet.

As for the current size, the goldfish bowl of 5 systems is on a 1:1 scale for planetary size / distances etc. It looks to be about a 20 light years diameter sphere. Without being able to jump drive from absolutely anywhere, it would take you forever to travel (max jump speed is ~2500 times the speed of light, which isn't as fast as you think in these scales :-P)

Human populated aka "core" systems have been known about since day 1 practically.

2 months? I don't think so ;-)

With 10,000 organised explorers (which is way beyond any reasonable expectation).

1440 systems per day * 10,000 = 14,400,000 total systems per day

100,000,000,000 / 14,400,000 = 6944 days / 365 = 19 years

That's every explorer visiting a unique system 24 / 7 / 365 for 19 years..

Does system hopping qualify as exploring? I don't think so. Also no accounting for fuel scooping / pirate interception / destruction / ship repair etc

The SC team seem to be way more locked in the 'we need more money' mindset with their continues stretch goals and their selling of pay-to-win ships.

I'm happy ED is not going the pay-to-win route. They do need to get funding somehow, and if us fans are willing to chip in, i don't see a problem at all.

Compared to other mmo's it's actually cheap if you think about it.

No monthly fee, for most other MMO's you pay more then that in annual fee costs alone.

And then you have to buy the game and the expansions too.

All expansions included. And on top of that you get to help the development by testing early builds.

The quote was 'traverse' not explore. I agree with you though, exploring all those systems would be a ridiculously time consuming job. But, I think DB was basing that statement off of info we don't yet know : basically, how far an 'explorer' version of various ships can jump with full fuel. These ships aren't in the game yet, so we don't know that. And if they are just traversing the galaxy, they don't have to stop at every system. Just one at their farthest range so they can refuel, and then off they go again.

Pointless as far as I'm concerned, but, it's a guarantee that someone will at least attempt that, just because :-P

I'll see if I can find a link to the quote

Seriously?

Space sim, vs Flight sim?

All that matters is: it's a game, is it fun?

Sure is, fun as hell!

OK, sign me up.

I think this game could be the WoW-killer (using Oculus Rift).

As people have described above, it's a space flight sim with Flight Assist off. However, the veterans of the game fly using Flight Assist on, and only switch it off during certain dogfighting manoeuvres.

If you used Flight Assist off all the time, it would be too much for us humans because we don't have enough fingers or mental processing power to make it workable.

This guy only flies with Flight Assist Off - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DwVYc_iPAvg

Manuallly counteracting every directional change and maintaining that level of control is completely nuts...

Space faring technology that didn't develop computers to auto dock ships or target  and track objects in space are immersion blowing. I can't imagine a space station that would allow tones of mass to come hurtling at it under total human control. Collision would destroy the station or massively damage it.

The oculus rift sounds neat but after a couple of oooo ahhhhs and it will be back to the game play..

I love the idea of exploring a vast galaxy but with the technology oddities it doesn't "feel" right to me right now. Yes I'm in beta. Yes I loved the original Elite. However, I am a more experienced and mature gamer now with increased expectations.  Looking forward to more beta updates. Especially some tutorials.
