OP  4/01/14 7:27:37 AM#1

After being driven back to WoW after playing in the ESO BETA, I decided to purchase ESO, as I really really want to like this game and give it more of a chance.

Here is my review, after a few days of playing as well as several beta weekends.

THE GOOD:

Beautiful Graphics, better storyline than what was in BETA (it seems), as well as voice acting, smooth release, no lag, no performance issues. I enjoy the combat, being able to dodge manually, block as well, and interupt all based on movement and clicking.

The UI is very intuitive, as are the skill tree's and almost all other menu's.

Interesting story, it helps to take your time and not rush thru, and enjoy the immersion.

Gear upgrades that can be done by yourself is refreshing.

Big world, no competiting for spawns, no grind.

No rat race like WoW, where you feel left behind.

Leveling feels good....takes longer to get and you feel like you acheived something.

THE BAD:

No way to block Gold Spamers...thats right, the gold spammers have arrived and not only thru zone chat, but using /Yell as well, and there seems to be no way to report ot block them, other than remove zone chat and yell from your options.

Some bugs such as werewolves and other spawns just standing there not able to attack or be attacked.

Everyone look the same, not much to make players unique from each other.

In some  areas where mobs of players are all running to the next objective....and thus kind of spoils the mystery...

Also, not really anything new or innovative is being brought to the table MMO wise...

THE UGLY:

The subscription...come on....that went the way of the dinosaurs....

Horses cost over 40K in gold unless you bought the Imperial Edition, which frankly IMHO is a total waste of money.

Kind of lonely....seems very hard to find groups or invite players into one.

CONCLUSION:

It is the Elder Scrolls...which is the only reason I am playing this game.

However, so far I am enjoying the immersion....this is due to the great graphics, great story and voice overs.

Seems release is much better than BETA IMHO....

I have shut off "zone chat" to stay immersed as I am more interested in it as a MMORPG  as opposed to a rat race MMO.

Thus in a nutshell, if you are the type who wants Immersion in your RPG, take your time, enjoy yourself and avoid the MMO rat race, then this game is for you.

Otherwise, as I have learned again....and again....that if a MMO rat race is more suited for you than WoW would be better.

I truly think this game ESO is more of a RPG persons type game.

Good read!

As far as gold spam - Have you been unable to right-click > Ignore people? I've been doing so, but I guess I didn't take the time to notice if it was working or not.

All you have to do is right click the gold spammers name and select ignore...

There is an ignore function in game, although its hard to keep on top of it. I'm  loving the game though.

That´s what people should have to know before they start TESO. It´s more focused on the RPG part than on the MMO part. Although it still makes fun with others, and this option to quest with others/ make dungeons combined with the huge world of Tamriel, the lore background and the lovely details which you can find by exploring makes it for me one of the best experiences until know. I´m quite a huge TES fan (but not that i know every detail of the lore) and i do like it that i have the chance to see Tamriel and if i want this share this experience with others. I don´t have to mod anything and i am hoping to see the whole continent of Tamriel and maybe sometimes an other continent of Nirn. I missed a MMO with such a great background. Let´s see what the next year brings.

Yes there are some Bugs and i hate that also. It´s just frustrating that so many people accept unfinished and unpolished products. But i do appreciate the work of the Developers it must have been a big project creating this world, mostly stand to the TES Lore and satisfy both, TES and MMO fans. Think they have found a good way to satisfy these groups except the hardcore TES and MMO fans, who wanted a real TES / MMO. Maybe they needed just the few months until June or July, but maybe the pressure of the publisher was to big. Since they improved the game very much each beta test (except the last one) i trust them to polish furthermore in the next few weeks.

Just going to touch on a few point here.

1) You sure can block gold spammers. Really dont know how it was hard to figure out to right click their name and then click "Ignore" (which blocks their entire account, not just that character). It actually functions better than most games due to the full account block, rather than dealing with them just spamming on a new character same account.

2) Not sure what youre saying is bad about everyone "looking the same". Youve got just about as much customization in the character creation as you do in any TES game, down to adjusting the sizes of individual body parts, facial features, etc. As far as armor goes, the only thing missing is a dye system, although that wasnt in any TES games that I can recall either.Aside from the dye, it has more to offer than most other games by allowijng you to create every armor piece and weapon with a different racial style. Youre not stuck with having X sword or X helmet looking the same for everyone. 2 people might have the same exact equipment on but 1 decked out in Orc style and another in Bosmer, which make them look quite different. So aside from people not having a bunch of different colors, they look more unique than in most other games.

Basically: If you enjoyed the amount of customization available in TES SP games, you'll find just as much here.

3) No, subscriptions haven't gone the way of the dinosaurs. Just because a few major MMOS (most of which were struggling to get subs in the 1st place a couple of years after launch) went F2P doesnt mean every game is going to launch as F2P.

It's strange about gold-sellers because I haven't seen a single one on the EU server.  As yet.  It's odd they're doing it because they need a paid account to do it and, after this month, a sub - how are they making a profit with accounts being (hopefully) banned?

I'm glad people can enjoy this game, but the problem I have is as just as you described, to enjoy this game, you've got to shut out everyone else around you and take your time. That's fine, but when you tack on the monthly fee, your effectively paying a monthly fee for a single player experience, that's not ok. The value just isn't there when one can play vanilla or modded Skyrim for a flat fee, I think Vanilla at this point is around $20 - that's it $20 and done no need to spend another penny for hours of entertainment that is very similar and an arguably better experience than ESO.

I'm just waiting for more reviews of the game to come out to get a good opinion on the game systems and how it plays on release.  I do buy some games out of just hearing the premise, but ESO is one of those games that sounds like it was conceived on the tail end of the MMO gold rush that happened post WoWs unexpected and massive success.

Gold spammers have begun using a tactic where they type a normal looking message, give themselves a bit of space, then spam you to death. It gives the impression that there is no name tied to the message, just harmless player chat in between. It threw me off at first.

Example:

King Smashyoface: Anyone figure out how to do the quest with King blah blah

King Smashyoface: Looking for party for King blah blah

I have seen the issue with static mobs, but it hasn't actually prevented me from progressing yet.

I do get what you mean about looking the same. Sometimes it's difficult to tell who's an NPC and who's a real person even. Either way, it sort of helps immersion IMO.

In one breath you complain about tons of groups running to the next mob and ruining the mystery for you, but then you say it feels lonely. Obviously at least 4 other people aren't having troubles finding a group. The truth is that the best place to find groups are in quest zones, and there are no shortage of people there. The population is healthy ever before launch, almost annoyingly healthy at times. I actually found it more difficult to complete a couple quests due to people stealing my mobs than the difficulty of the game itself.

As far as mount costs, 40K is a lot of gold. However, I feel that mounts these days are just too easy. If you aren't simply given one, the actual cost is negligible in the game. I think I have about 100 mounts in WoW at this point. However, I only had 1 mount for the longest time. It was just too costly or time consuming to get them. I would much rather have that sense of satisfaction when I do actually get one though. For those who actually bought a collectors edition, I guess it was a pretty good value. So I don't see it as a bad thing at all. It's the sense of entitlement that we deserve a mount, for some reason, that we need to stop.

As far as the monthly subscription goes, I think it'll always be around. Actually ESO goes one step further and is offering microtransactions at launch. That's a pretty bold move. Subscription models certainly aren't dead by any means. Right now they're mostly reserved for the select few games which are worthy of a subscription (which aren't many). Problem is that you can't introduce a sub model after launch, or maybe you can (it's never been done though), but taking a sub away, or making it optional later on is a much less painful process.

Goods

The game world is very beautiful and incredibly detailed. They did not put the same TLC into the character models, which is usually okay because you're too busy looking at the gorgeous world.

Bads

Just ignore the spammers. Or report & then ignore them. Right click -> ignore.

People look similar because we're low level - gear gets more interesting and as you find the racial motifs you can mix'n'match styles from the different races to create unique looks. People's faces and bodies however, do vary quite a bit.

Run a different direction from the mob of players, or if it's a public dungeon . . . welcome to public dungeons that's how they are. Thankfully ZOS has included solo dungeons , party dungeons and 4 man dungeons.

Uglies

Subscription: I really hope it stays, unless they adopt a really player friendly F2P model (aka non intrusive / non p2w / non constantly updating cash shop) I much prefer subs, it's cheaper for me. I like to support the game I enjoy, f2p just means I have to pay more to support people who aren't willing to pay (which means they shouldn't be there in the first place).

Expensive horses are good. Worst thing that happened in WoW was the move from long gold grind to purchase your mount to the collectibles system. It was a rite of passage to get your mount when it would take a month or more to grind the gold and you made sure you picked the mount you really wanted. In any case, gold isn't that hard to come by, have 6k after two days of playing and that's just from regular playing not a power-crafter.

Can't help with being lonely, you're the only one who can rectify that.

You can report the gold spammers.  Just have to fill out ticket and report them  for violating the TOS  agreement

Some bugs such as werewolves and other spawns just standing there not able to attack or be attacked.

Everyone look the same, not much to make players unique from each other. There is an incredible lot of different looks... each race has 4 armor sets for each of the 15 zones.. but, they are all realistically looking.... no WoWish looks here... i love the amount of armors..

In some  areas where mobs of players are all running to the next objective....and thus kind of spoils the mystery...  Najor problem indeed, ruins immersiion and challenge

Also, not really anything new or innovative is being brought to the table MMO wise...  Its evolution, finally stories, crafting and exploration done right in an MMO

THE UGLY:

The subscription...come on....that went the way of the dinosaurs.... A death cow, it is as it is.. abnd for all great MMO? before it has worked

Horses cost over 40K in gold unless you bought the Imperial Edition, which frankly IMHO is a total waste of money.  40K gold is not much at endgame...  its just to support the econnomy... gold needs to be rare in MMO? to have a working economy, allways new stuff to work for and wish for... being able to afford everything ruins much of the game for me

Kind of lonely....seems very hard to find groups or invite players into one.  Its a choice to comfort the ES fans.  There is however a few elite mobs in open world zones.... but for grouping there is groupdungeons/Adventure zones/PvP

CONCLUSION:

It is the Elder Scrolls...which is the only reason I am playing this game.

However, so far I am enjoying the immersion....this is due to the great graphics, great story and voice overs.

This is the reason to play this game in the first place...  and there is probably more of this great content then in any other MMO at release..

I agree with that last sentence... its an RPG game in a multiplayer world, with COoP in dungeons and adventure zones.... and a huge PvP battlefield, and a lot of small systems that make people socialise ... all in gredients i need to have a lot of fun..

Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations)
Currently playing : The Elder Scrolls Online and Wildstar

The ugly sections aren't very ugly if you ask me.

You knew the game was a subscription game, so it seems crazy to me to list it as a negative.

Most MMO's don't give you a free horsey either and finding a group is pretty easy if you take the time to try to form one.  Just because there aren't groups sitting in some group finder doesn't mean players won't want to group up.

I would find it a negative if the game didn't make me work for a mount, I'm not all that jealous of the people who move 15% faster than me.

OP,

A few thoughts:

  1. Gold Spammers: I heard someone on my guilds RaidCall say there was an Addon to block Gold Spammers. I was only half listening because I was crafting at the time, but I'll ask again tonight and if I find out the name of the addon, I'll post it in this thread.
  2. Horses: Not all horses cost 40 K. There is a 17 k horse. You should be able to make that by level 20. I'm told the quests from 15 - 20 start paying out 300 - 500 gold per quest. One of my guild mates who is level 20 made 18k questing yesterday.
  3. Subscriptions: You play WoW and you're mad about subs in ESO? Personally, I'm just fine with it. But, then I'm not spending $60 month on other new games that come out. I might buy 3 or 4 more games all year.

I haven't seen one gold spam message on EU. Feel a little left out.

Broken Quests, Broken public dungeon, 2/3 of the lvl 12-15 dungeons have broken events or are very easy to break, broken Dark Anchors.

In the beta I geared up for dungeons using Dark Anchors, on live I had to start the lvl 12 dungeons in White and a couple of green pieces. Since you reach lvl 12 far before you actually do any lvl 12 quests now after they made the starting zones optional.

The Dungeons were pretty hard at 12 in white gear, or the group I was in wasn't so good, not so easy to tell. But now that I'm 13 and in full green/blue it's much easier.  Atleast I'm thinking the dungeons are scaled for green gear minimum or it is much harder. With almost all ways to get gear currently not working it makes the game harder and probably frustrating to some.

You don't need a payed account to gold spam, only idiot developers think this.

Steps:

Make a pre-order for the game on a credit card.

Wait till pre-order early access is send to you.

Cancel order or simply do not have enough funds to pay for the shipment of the game.

Spam!

You can check this easily, is the account name (the one you ignore, not the character name) a random string? Then it was setup as above, an "exploit" that has been exploited since early access was introduced years ago. It is not complex stuff yet it catches every single MMO developer unaware.

Even worse? Right click to report player? The game does NOT include the account name or character name, ESO support wants to write down a 10-15 random string, then type it in the report window.

MMO developers all got a blindspot when it comes to gold selling.
