The 7th anniversary of Lord of the Rings Online is right around the corner and so is the release of Lord of the Rings Online’s 13th Update: The Breaking of Isengard. Previously, players had taken part in Isengard content by being held captive by Saruman and the orcs within.  Now? The story has progressed with the books and players will get to explore what happened and how Saruman came to lose power. Yes folks, that means lots and lots of Ents and the Entmoot.

Read more of Bill Murphy's Lord of the Rings Online: Playing the Ent in the Breaking of Isengard.

I suppose there is no group content with this patch. How the mighty have fallen.

By what we are told so far... probably not. I agree with your comment btw.

What sounded appealing to you?

The mobs he describes are all reused models (angry huorns, wood trolls, slugs, etc). They reuse mob models a lot, but still it's not exactly a grabber to hear that a new map area is released with the same mobs again. This have been happening since Moria, before really, but heavily since then.

Their new quest mechanic is a time sink so you don't burn through their content too fast. It's basically a repackaged daily on an extended timer.

The session play as an Ent does sound sort of clever with how the hobbits move fast, but that's not really a core selling point.

Improved inventory is welcome, but then they're monetizing something people have already purchased through pre-orders or direct cash shop sales. I get that they're expansions to the inventory system, but still it seems typical of Turbine to sell you something in a basic form, improve on it and polish it, and then sell it to you again. It's just one of those things they do that puts me off.

There are some other things about the game and how they sell it that sort of sour it for me so that does tint my opinion. However, the details of the update sound uninspired and bland to me.

Please.  This game has broken the lore many times.  Dragons, undead dragons, rune keepers....

The game is over.  It's been dead for a couple of years.  Their best times were right when Moria was released and it has been a steady decline ever since.  Anyone who has played the game for some length of time will say the exact same thing.

They just need to put this game out of it's misery once and for all.

I agree with most your comment except I don't get the rehashed mobs.  It's middle earth it's not like they can create some new villains and if they did well people would cry it's lore breaking .  In lotro we are stuck with certain enemy type.

Yeah, there isn't a lot of creative freedom for mob diversity, but they don't really seem to make a lot of effort to hide it either.  It's not one of my biggest criticisms of the game, but it's also not a very strong selling point either. I don't think Bill was trying to sell the xpac, but he did mention them as a bullet feature. That made me think the feature list for this update isn't very strong. It's just an observation.

I'm not a huge fan of Turbine anymore and how they've run the game, but I don't feel good about trashing the game so I try and pass on commenting. I do miss the experience I had in Shadows (SoA), Moria, and even Mirkwood to an extent, and I wish I could recapture that experience when I revisit this game.

I think it's more like STO's DOff assignment chains, which is not a bad thing, I like the DOff system there.

The other two are re-used ones indeed, the daily quests with some random are from Rohan (Hytbold and the Legendary edition's exclusive horse session play content), the escorting quest giver mechanic was first used (I think) in the Evendim revamp. Honestly I don't mind them, especially the latter, that's a great way to handle questing.

A small correction to the bags, they won't monetise it again, they will charge just for the additional space. So far you could have 6 bags, with 15 slots in each one. After U13 you can buy more slots above what you already have. The other updates (resize, filter, sort and search) will be free for everybody.

I'm curious about the ND revamp, the book closure, and the Treebeard session play. I don't like the concept of the mini huorn, but I already wrote it under Suzie's thread :) http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/post/6260012

Just sad to see what this game has become, my 3rd most played mmo on and off for 5 years. After Gap of Rohan I can't stomach to give them anymore of my $ for garbage.

Dozens of MMO's, RTS's, FPS's, etc.

Funny, not one of you can say anything nice about the game or Turbine.  Have to disagree about the lore, they might stretch it a bit, but never broken it, you just don't know much about all the lore Tolkien wrote, there was a lot more than just in those 4 books.

As to the game the servers are alive and doing well.  Lots of people on playing.  I never have problems getting a group on any of the servers I play on.  So you can naysay all you want, but lots of other people are still enjoying the game.  Go play some of those f2p games out there that will make you grasp how much better lotro is.

I'm not bashing the game it's still the best experience I have had in an mmo.  My only issue is the direction they are taking it is not what I enjoyed for 6 years.  I still come back every time they release a book.

I really don't have a lot of nice stuff to say about Turbine anymore. The nicest thing I can think of is they are trying to make AC available to the community rather than just close it. That's commendable in my book.

What they've done with LotRO though not so much. I liked the game a lot and played it for years (since the beta period) and don't dislike it now. I just don't think they've done a lot with it. I don't like a lot of how they've sold the game. There are just things that sour my experience. However, I wouldn't tell someone not to play it. I think the core community is happy overall and their servers are mostly healthy by all accounts more or less. I just give my opinion on how I feel about the game, not so much how I think the gaming community as a whole feels about it.

The community is of course the best reason to play regardless of anything else. They have mostly nice people, while other mmos have mostly toxic selfish people. It is great, to actually see people alive and talking!!

In fact, gameplay mechanics can only do so much, the most exciting and fun action combat games make it hard to communicate, as you are busy clicking hotbar rotationals, and it is really hard to find that correct balance, that both makes the game fun, and yet gives people the will and ambition to actually communicate and socialize with others.

Making a game to soloish is what all the mmos are doing now, that is why groups usually tend to be zergs done in complete silence. They really should keep reusing models and zones if they have to, in order to make new instances and new quests for groups. Shouldn't be that hard, just come out with a lot new group content, but reusing the same exact zone and npc models from solo content... Make everything scalable from solo, to 2 , to 3 , to full party, to raid...

Above all though, the game is still fun, and it is the only Lord of the Rings Online game I play. They just need to take more advantage of scaling and instancing, keep making more group content and above all keep making reasons to go there, it can't be that hard to create quests if you are just reusing the art!!

MMO's are like that though, they get old and stale, they quit making things better, Everquest 2 has had terrible expansions for the past few years, Tears of Veeshan and Chains of Eternity were terrible, they quit making overland content and put everything behind instances... Above all, the 2 overland solo zones aren't even fun...

Maybe someday, they will make another fun expansion like Ruins of Kunark again and Kingdom of Sky, but unfortunately, all mmos cease to make good expansions after awhile...
