Greetings good folks of MMORPG.com.I've been thinking that i should write an honest suggestion and neo-view about Darkfall so you might think before you buy and play it.I strongly recommend for new players and players who might wanna sub as well as themepark players for a leap of faith.And btw this will be something like Darkfall for Dummies = )

What Darkfall Offers;

1- SOCIALIZATION

I've been tinkering around games for a while now ( 12 years of gaming and mmo experience) and im 25 years old.I played and enjoyed both themepark style games and sandbox style games while enjoying the themepark experience more.It is a good thing to do sometimes, being lead by the game and being into raids, grinding, getting the best gear and long story short, experiencing the whole lot.

Now if we talk about what DFUW offers, i can say it does not offer a leadership.It is not a game that you are being lead to someplace and then the other one and then the other one etc...

But the second you enter the game you will find actual players who lead you instead of the game itself.

I've been reading and hearing this kind of thing from all the players who are frightened about being alone.You will not be alone.

The game itself has it's own dynamics that forces you to socialize while the other games not and you will be playing entire game socializing and making friends, making enemies a lot.

The problem with MMORPG's today is they are not giving the feel of an MASSIVELY MULTIPLAYER ONLINE experience while in Darkfall UO you can taste it from nail to toe.

2- SOLO PvE, GROUP PvE, SOLO PvP, Group PvP

Don't believe some people who say that Darkfall has no contents at all.It has an immersive, beautiful world that you can travel, solo PvE for gold, materials that you can salvage/craft, and valuables, treasure maps you can tinker with if you want.

Which game amongst all does not have grind after all?

You grind quests, you grind story you even grind lore in most games nowadays.In which popular game out there you don't grind for something that will make you more powerful?

In Darkfall, you grind as well but no quests, no story, no lore, only mobs,As well as any other game out there, you grind mobs, both solo and with a group.Don't be fooled by some unprofessional players out there. YOU CAN AND WILL SOLO PVE IN THIS GAME.

3 OPEN WORLD HOUSING, PLAYER CRAFTED EQUIPMENT, FULL PLAYER DRIVEN ECONOMY.

---Other games still try to implement some housing features but DFuw has that already.You can make money if you want to buy a house, go for treasure chests for rare loot and/or can loot house deeds by random chests appear on the land.

--- All the equipment from potions to bows, from ships to mounts are player crafted in this game.There is an auction house-like market system that you can purchase stuff.There are also rare weapon/armor loots from monsters as well as other games.

 

4 ACTION BASED COMBAT REQIRES SKILL BUT NO HIT 1-2-3 BUTTONS

Needless to say, DFUW has a combat mechanic that requires skill to execute.It is not a carebear style combat that you push the same buttons again and again.

5 CLASS SYSTEM WITH/WITHOUT HOLY TRINITY

A healer class is available in the game that if you choose it , will be likely to help a lot during both PvE and PvP events, other than that, every class has minor healing abilities that provides them efficient amount of survival.The Holy Trinity system is there if you want to play it that way, and it's not there if you choose not to.The same thing applies for tanks, dps, and whatever else left.

Why you can chose to play it

1- It has everything that a game can offer.It doesn't have a shitty storyline or quests that you don't read ( im a hardcore lore fan of video games btw, but very few out there provides a good story or lore therefore i don't bother reading because im not impressed by most of them) it doesn't have a basic system that you can reach to high end in no time ( you have to grind much but most of the time it's not boring because either the rewards are really useful/good or you playing with your clan and chatting nicely on teamspeak during that time) but it has everything that other games has to offer and don't offer.

And it's 20 bucks nowadays. I'd say give it a shot. ; )

Nice detailed post, and everyone on this site could use this breakdown of a very worthy title, that just seems to release more content lately.

No one would care about my personal experience with that game, and that kind of shit taints objective info like this.

When you look at DF UW you see that ESO isnt really doing anything "New" its just "Popularizing and Polishing" Certain aspects of a game type.

I was with a Small 8 man Stealth PvP force inside "Cyrod" this last weekend on ESO picking solos off the road in 8 player 1 shot ambushes, then re-stealthing and repeating. During this bad ass gameplay in the "Instanced RvR" someone said "FUCKING DARKFALL!" in chat, and many people had "Darkfall" on their tongues this weekend while in Cyrod PvP in ESO.

As I said before...no one truly quits darkfall, they only take breaks from it.  

Yes, the population is lower but I won't settle for playing an inferior game like ESO.  PVP must have collision detection.  PVP must have friendly fire.  PVP must have an open world to pvp in, not a separate instance.  PVP should have a wicked physics engine.  The people around me should all show up around me and not be phased out.  Darkfall does all this.   ESO doesn't do anything like that.  I shake my head that a small thing like full loot can scare so many people away.  So spread the word, and maybe Darkfalls low population can get bigger.  

 

PS:  Loot regionalization and Area of Influence territory control are coming soon, which will bring a lot of people back to Darkfall.  You ain't seen nothing yet.

Its been a while since I played DF, a while so long, I actually don't remember long.  I have tried it a few times, initially playing on the EU servers when it came out before they had the NA servers.  I really liked the open play to it.

Problem I just kept running into.  I would join a clan, and it was about harvesting, always harvesting.   Got boring real quick.  Had to share everything with the clan.  If you went out and harvested alone, for personal reasons, gank, stolen, start over.  Got tired of that, after a while.

The real killer, levelling.  It took so long to level anything up.  I wanted to battle and fight with my guild, but was completely useless, as I was weak.  I was told, you gotta pound sand for a year, then you can be useful.  Well, nah, I got better things to do with myself than pound sand for a year just to get to the "fun" part.

Maybe its changed since then.

I have dabbled in Darkfall since it's original release. The single biggest reason I gave up on it is displayed for all to see in this newest patch: WEATHER EFFECTS. 

Why the hell are they even THINKING about useless bullshit like that, when the entire game is completely unfinished? They have NO direction for their development, and I'm not going to fund this wandering waste of time any more.

global pvp fails in north america . any game with it implodes given enough time or simply is never as successful as those without it . you can look at WOW servers and the global pvp ones are fewer and always had space open for instance . you can just accept that many global pvp games never take off because to many high levels beat up on low levels and discourage people from bothering to play it . 

people who like global pvp should realize this more than others because well they gravitate towards global pvp games . didnt darkfall already implode ?

I agree with everybody in this thread so far, to some extent. Everybody here has at least a partially valid point. Mainly, I agree with OP in that DFUW is worth the $20.

 

I love Aventurine for making this game and I hate Aventurine for fuckng this game up so bad. So Aventurine is Aventurine. It's a love/hate thing for me.

 

I played DF original for over a year toward the end of it's life. It was dying, but it was still fun enough. I played DFUW for about 6 weeks after it launched with a good clan who has also since stopped playing. I stopped playing because I played as much as I could -- 4-7 hours a day -- and I was at 70K pp and noticed 150k pp guys from the so-called "invincible" clan at the time. I don't remember the name of the clan now. I haven't followed the DF politics since then. It was just discouraging to have played so much and still not have the pp (sounds funny now). So I quit. Our clan was starting to get picked on and there really wasn't much we could do about it. We aligned with other clans but they were also getting marginalized as the power clans joined with the other power clans and squeezed out the little guys. That's how it was then. It was depressing.

 

And politics can be treacherous and there was betrayal as well. I understand that can be the fun of it for a lot of people. But I just wasn't into it at the time. You might like it. In that sense, yes, the players make the content. That's a plus and a minus, but more of a plus in my book.

 

Recently, I've been thinking about going back, but all of my clan is gone, so I'd have to start fresh. Also, I live in Asia, so ping is an issue. Ping is a very big issue in this game. Those factors mitigate against my coming back. If I had good ping, I think I would play.

 

Also ESO is coming out and I want to play that. These games are not to be compared. I'm not saying ESO is better at all. I just like Elder Scrolls games and I want to play it. It's my best option now. That's all.

But..you got to be in a big/active guild. These type of games turn into "the bigger fish eats the smaller one". And starting playing the game 3 months after the game launches is pointless. New players will be PK'ed left and right by players that have toons with very high stats, and if the new player join a guild the only useful thing they can provide to the guild is farming mats, so these new players become fodder and are treated as such.

At least the game provides a safe zone for new players to get to understand the basics. But the reality wall will show up sooner or later. Also, why the game need new players when you have all these vets from DF1 around? Is the game not fun anymore for the vets?

What a joke. They've said that aesthetic things like this don't interfere with development in other areas. Not only that, people complain about OTHER aesthetic weak points in the game like racial models (I really want them in), but apparently something like weather affects are out of the question? By the way, have any of you played with these new effects? They're awesome. They affect pvp, they don't seem to have any negative impact on performance and they add a great overall atmosphere to the game.

in addition to the aesthetic things like that, they HAVE added a lot of content since launch, so I don't know what you're talking about. The game is getting better consistently, including things like content, and quality of life shit like buffing transfers, adding the new chat system, adding the new options for skills like casting when you select them, etc.

I'm not sure what else you can ask for except consistently improving the game.
