I like the idea of an MMO with a lot of the old-school mechanics, and perhaps some of the newer MMO ideas.

I don't trust Brad to execute, however.

Um, he didn't get the KS done right.

MMORPG.COM is failing to be objective with it's articles related to Pantheon. There were serious mistakes with this Kickstarter regarding the poor presentation of their 'vision', the purposed game has nothing innovative to offer, and there's a number of people that simply don't trust Brad McQuaid.

WTH is your problem bro? Talk about a HUGE McQuaid hater. So the kickstarter wasn't perfect. Who gives a shit. DO you know what type of MMO hes looking to make? The target audience their looking at having play their game? I think they did a very good job getting hte message of Pantheon to those that have interest.

The kickstarter still got 460k. And thats with it having as you put it "poor presentation of their vision" And who said anything about innovative? why the hell does everything have to be innovative to be good? The MMO communities obsession with perfection is ruining the genre.

Pantheon is about bringing back the true essence of what MMOs were. Rewinding the clock so to speak. And to be honest, i think its the perfect time for such a MMO. I wish Brad all the luck in the world and pray he gets the backing he needs to produce this MMO.

What is your problem sir?  My comments weren't inflammatory or rude and you're responding like they were.  I merely pointed out that the interview wasn't objective and sugarcoated the fact that there were some huge problems with this Kickstarter campaign.  I don't hate McQuaid, nor did I ever play Everquest or Vanguard.

You are correct in saying the campaign was not perfect but you suggest that is was still somehow adequate or competently done.  It simply wasn't.  You say Pantheon is about bringing back the 'true essence' of MMO's?  Well why wasn't that communicated during the campaign.  The only sense of McQuaid's vision I got was that he wanted to make a 'group oriented' MMO, of which there are several good ones from which to choose right now.

You all claim that I'm some hater and I'm not.  MMO's are a business venture and this one was presented very poorly.  Dubious presentations of vague game concepts and reliance on cred in the industry do not make for a successful fundraising campaign and there is every concern that Pantheon will not be developed properly.

For every 'hater' like myself there will always be a fanboy, but no amount of yellow text or all caps rants are going to make up for the reality that what is going on with Pantheon is suspect and right now, giving money to these people is not justified.  It would appear that a number of people agree with me as the current amount of funds raised on their website is just over $100,000, a quarter of what they raised on Kickstarter.  The fans who contributed the other $300,000 must also have concerns with this project, do they not?

There were several videos talking about what he game is supposed to be including the very in depth video with Boogie who brought up Vanguard and made Brad answer for it. [mod edit]

Here is the Boogie interview, watch it [mod edit]

Any mmo worth its salt should be like a good prostitute when it comes to its game world- One hell of a faker, and a damn good shaker!

Let me put this as delicately as I can. Brad,  it's not the game concept that people rejected. It's you sitting at the helm and being responsible for the finances that go into making it that people rejected. You are a talented creative guy...no one trusts you as an executive manager.

-Brad "Aradune Mithara" McQuaid

Chief Creative Officer, Visionary Realms, Inc.

January, 2014

then who is the CEO and/or CFO? i checked the VR, Inc., website and couldn't find a listing of members of the company.

I could be wrong, but I think they said they were hoping to get a CEO after the kickstarter was successful (I guess to be more attractive to someone they thought was talented) and to have money to pay that person.  So they may be doing that search now, that they are doing the funding on their site.  Brad said he was not going to be the financial or CEO type person for this project.

That's the first sign of a problem right there. Your CEO needs to be in on the project from the start if your founding a company.....especialy when you are trying to secure your initial round of funding.  If they had a decent one...I can assure you that the Kickstarter wouldn't have had as many problems as it did..... and the issues with Brad's past and peoples distrust of him would have been thoroughly dealt with and pretty much have been a non-issue for the game.

You don't make the spokesman and public voice for the project be the same one that people are leary about. You bring that guy on only to talk about issues specific to the creative aspects and you have the CEO be the voice for everything else about the game.

The way they handled this assured many people that this would be nothing more then a repeat of Vangaurd.

Oh yeah...and Brad IS responsible for what happaned with Vanguard because he was the person sitting in the corner office.... that's what being in charge means. The buck stops with you. We've had too much these days of people wanting authority without being willing to accept responsability or being held accountable when things go wrong.

Edit - No one here is trying to crucify the man. No one here is sending him hate mail. If he ends up making a game and it's good, people will buy it and no one will begrudge him his success. Heck I hope he does end up making the game and it turns out good...we could use more good games. However, he's asking for peoples donations in advance on the promise of what he'll do with them. If he thinks people aren't going to judge him based upon his past before opening up thier wallets and making a donation, he's already living in a different world. Right now, the main thing standing between him and getting the funding for the game he wants to make is his own ego.....and that doesn't bode well for the future.

You want to hate Brad like he sold your soul fine.

But don't lie please.

Here is the Boogie interview, watch it if its not too much trouble and you wish not to lie anymore

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=45XrbsBt34c

But I get it Brad stole your kids and sold them for the gold that you spun for straw

That Bastard!

+1 !!!

I'm really sorry, but this game actually showed more content than MANY games that are posted up on Kickstarter. Even look at something like "Double Fine Adventure" WTF is that! AND IT DIDN'T EVEN HAVE A FRICKIN' NAME! Camelot Unchained was another one, although they almost got bit in the ass by not being prepared.

I would argue that the biggest issue with the Kickstarter based on what I saw was value. First, stretch goals were poorly done. I didn't get this level of excitement from them. Like 800K to make a whole game.... then 250K to add a new class...? Ummm, yeah. Look at something like Project Eternity and it's like they hit many of their stretch goals and then they just keep adding levels to this massive dungeon. That's cool. It's like they're pulling you in so you increase your pledge because you want to see the next level go in, right? The levels for Pantheon didn't make me jump out of my seat.

Secondly, the packages sucked...... BIG TIME! Soooooooooo, for $35 I get.... a copy of... the game? Huh. Well I could get a copy of Final Fantasy for like $40 right now. And I already know it's good. You need to create something that says, "Hey Buddy! Thanks for supporting us. We really appreciate it and we're going to give you a super sweet deal since you're helping us make this game." Like maybe charge me $35 bux and give me some bullshit vanity gear, a forum badge and for an extra $5 bux a founder title. Oh, and for $50 bux, I get a second copy of the game! Boom! Yup, that shit just happened! You know why this works? Because I need your money and I also need subscribers! So it's kinda like killing two birds with one stone. I'm selling you two copies of the damn game for the price of one, plus all that other shit that doesn't cost me anything to manufacture, and I get 2 subscribers out of it. Wow, I'm awesome. Oh, and by I, I was talking like Brad in the third person.

I have a problem with the concept. The vision does not match the audience. Or should I say the size of the audience. For a game to be so focused on group mechanics how will this team combat content migration that happens when older players no long do the lower level content and new players are stuck trying to get things done with very limited support? Will they incorporate a DF tool? A reward system for vets to redo old content? All these things needed to be laid out during their first KS attempt.

I mean don't get me wrong, I love grouping.....when I can find a group. But it felt like he was trying to pull on the heartstrings of old EQ vets without offering solid answers to these fundamental questions.  It's like me trying to get together a D&D session from a group I rolled with 20 years ago. It sounds cool in concept. But in all reality you have to have it all figured out before you go sending out an email blast.  You cannot make this stuff up along the way. Especially when dealing with such a volatile group of gamers.

And even though I feel like a game like Pantheon was not for me (I didn't like EQ) I honestly thought the demand was out there from the EQ crowd. Well maybe it goes to show you that like the MMORPG genre, not all EQ players like all things EQ.  Maybe it was a mixture of different features that resonated with the players. Anyway I hope it gets made anyway. And even though I'm not a strong fan of piecemeal mmorpg development, I do think that every type of player should have something they can play.

Definatly a lot of hater of Brad on here.If anyone has the right its me to hate this guy but I don't.It seems that people never forgive one person but they will forgive gaming companies.i,e EA spew out shit games every year, badly put together and released too early.Capcom another one.Ubisoft as well.Yet all you complainers that have a dig at Brad cant wait to buy your next pile of shit off these companies including day 1 dlc

I bought vanguard on release and it was bad but I stayed with the game for 2.5 yrs and loved every second of it.you know its your choice wether or not you wish to fund a game .But if you don't want to you shouldn't really come into a discussion where people are interested. There is only one possible reason you are here and that is to stir shit. How sad that is really that rather than go play a game you like you would rather bump a thread of a game or a person you don't like. You do realise you are doin us so called Brad fanboys a favour by keeping the discussion live.

Lot of softballs in that so-called interview, and not a tough question in the lot.

No follow-up questions about how/why the KS failed, and potentially violated KS terms, by wanting to use the money to "start a business"?

Nothing about no one else having the gall to charge $15/mo for a forum subscription?

I would say this was "bad games journalism" but there needs to be actual journalism for it to be bad.

This was a softcore marketing piece dressed up in a cheap suit.

I doubt anyone on the website will see anything substantial in the '2-4 weeks' they say they should have waited before starting the KS.

LoL at Brad thinking of his glory in the same vein as Stan Lee...

I pledged during the KS, as the idea sounded interesting to me, however over the course of 40 DAYS, I never saw more than ~4 of their supposed '10' veterans online posting or whatever. Even then it was a paragraph here, a landscape there. Are they really working on this, or what, I thought.

My whole feeling at this point is just .. MEH

First time I have heard about this game. I like what I've seen and heard so far with it though.

Developers seems to be upfront and honest about expectations, past experiences in both success and failures, and seem to have a good general idea on what sort of game they would like to create.

I will probably end up throwing a couple dozen bucks at the development via their webpage a little later in the week.

Hope you get over it, and maybe he will make a game you will like, maybe he won't.

I don't hold studio/dev grudges, if someone makes a mmo I like, I will play it, they are so few and far between, I cannot afford to hold grudges and narrow my choices even more.  I wouldn't buy anything from most well known studios if I did (EQ, SoE, etc...).

His 'vision' is a mmo I would like to play, if he can pull it off, everything else aside, I am all for it.

Also, people stuck on this $15 thing, I was interested in what they were talking about, went and looked and it seems a little steep, but you get to have live chats and bounce things off of the guys making the game, so if you can afford it, and you think your ideas need to be heard, go for it.  I wouldn't do it, because I don't feel my ideas need to be heard more than the access any donation seems to afford me, if I were to give money to the site.

I pay around $350/mo. for my cable/cell phones bill, so mmo subs do not put me off (my cable/cell phone bill does, it is crazy, but haven't found a good alternative yet), and if I thought I needed to be heard by the devs, I could see wanting to do the $15 thing and have some say in design, maybe.

If I dislike a mmo, I don't care if my mom made it, I wouldn't play it or talk good about it, and I don't have blind faith in any developer, but I think Brad is as capable as anyone else of making the type of mmo that I like to play.  EQ/VG are in my top 5, despite it's bad launch killing it.

I do not think their KS is proof positive/negative of demand, Brad is a polarizing figure, I mean just read any thread about Pantheon.  People paid money for VG, and a lot of them couldn't play it at launch, due to not having a high end computer.  So they are pissed.  I had a brand new high end computer, so I only pretty much had some stutter/lag when panning for the most part, so it didn't kill my enjoyment, if I didn't have that computer, I may of hated VG, instead of loving it?  So even people that didn't play VG, see all the negativity and alligations of other behavior and probably get scared off.  So I think Brad is not the best case study for demand, as someone else said, Jacobs got CU funded, and people were pissed at him too, and CU was way more niche than anything Brad was pushing.

So, I have still not donated now, but I would love to see someone talk Raph into joining a team and making a new mmo.

Developers seems to be upfront and honest about expectations, past experiences in both success and failures, and seem to have a good general idea on what sort of game they would like to create.

I will probably end up throwing a couple dozen bucks at the development via their webpage a little later in the week.

Are you crazy?!?! You're not suppose to make sense on these forums? Do you know the lvl of flame that awaits you now?

The answer would be, no, you cynical non-self-informer.

There is a difference between being a CEO and a CCO, which he is the latter and not the former.

Thumbs up for what I just pointed out to this person: that there is a difference between CEO and CCO.

The mmorpg genre has been thoroughly degenerated by greedy corporations. These darn companies only want to make money by getting stupid people addicted to stupid games for morons. In order to squelch competition, these evil corporations pay people to come onto these forums and incite hatred for anyone who has the temerity to develop a game which might be better than the junk produced by mainstream development studios.

Those who say that the failure of the Pantheon kickstarter proves that there isn't a market for Brad's vision are really just stating the obvious: most consumers are dumb enough to enjoy playing games that are designed for people with the IQ of a darn monkey.

How many of these Brad haters are going to spend money on ESO and Wildstar?

Vanguard = fail   *could have been great*

Kickstarter: presentation, funding = fail

What in the world makes anyone think this motley crew can honestly deliver on what they are promising? Desperation? Like not wanting to go home from the bar alone so you bed the only thing available, the woofer?

I want a throwback mmo too but I don't want to piss away money for Vangaurd 2.0 with bad management, crappy communication and disappointment as features.

Actual post pertaining to the discussion:

I like the idea of Pantheon- I really, really do.  However, there is just not enough presentation available to me at the moment to even begin to think of paying for anything.  I, personally, have never gufawed over concept art when games are unveiled.  I need to see a snipit of it in pictures- maybe in motion with a video.

I fully support what these guys are doing, and I hope to see Pantheon develop further.
