OP  2/17/14 6:49:50 AM#1

In the past I've made a lot of positive posts about up and coming or non-mainstream games and the overwhelming responses to my posts are to try to convince me how evil the company is, how bad the game will be, or to not even waste my time trying it.

The negativity here is outrageous and we should all step back and look at ourselves and how we express our opinions.

We always tear people down and complain about what they're doing, then immediately follow it up with wanting a Free 2 Play or Buy 2 Play game that they take the most immense amount of risk in creating.

I'm gonna name off some examples.

I was really excited about Guild Wars 2, I hadn't found time to try it until 2 months after release, but by then, these forums kept me from even considering playing.  I finally played at a friends house and had a good bit of fun.

Darkfall 2 looked really amazing to me, the amount of hatred and vitriol made me not want to play the game just because of how much people complained about it.  Before they had even seen it I found out that 80% of all money that went towards that game funded the throne of satan himself.

If you make a post even saying the remotest positive thing about WoW (Which is actually pretty fun) you get stomped out publicly.

If you try to ask for donations to a designer with Kickstarter, the overwhelming response is people speculating about how bad it's going to be or complaining about how much has been spent on kickstarter already when they probably don't even have a credit card.

My point is all attempts to uplift and help people enjoy a gaming experience are met disastrously here.  I come on this site to find information about games and to see news about games and to find out where to download them.  Usually I just see a whole lot of complaining and negativity.

Does anyone want to reply to this post with something positive to say about a game they're playing?  I'd actually appreciate that.  Let's have a positive post for once.

You give others too much power. Steve Jobs once said that there will always be someone who will tell you what you can't or shoudn't do. Don't listen to them.

If you listen to them they get nothing and you lose everything.

As far as games that I'm excited to play? Fooling around in Aion at the moment but to be truthful I'm somewhat exctied about ESO (even with my critcisms).

And that's pretty much it. Still want to do a few things in LOTRO but will get around to them when I have the time.

Well Divergence has been under development for 9 years now and only just started for a 3rd round of crowdfunding. And that after the admin admitted having used illegal means in previous donation campaigns.

There is so much negativity on these forums because we are sick of corrupt companies.

Eh, you should know not to take MMO forums too seriously. They're always full of masochists who hate their hobby and the games they play or have obviously never played. I'm not sure which option is weirder.

I'm mostly playing Dark Souls nowadays. It's fun and unique. I really enjoy its multiplayer aspects that let you "invade" the worlds of other players and tease them a bit or help others by writing messages of the floor or coming to their world as a helpful phantom for jolly co-operation. Dark Souls 2 is coming soon enough and will hopefully fix some of DS1's problems, such as laggy PvP. I've also restarted playing Civilization 5, Devil May Cry 4 and Dirt 3. All of them are excellent games.

Don't come here expecting to see positive posting about anything.  Get the info your looking for and leave.  If I'm interested in a game I will watch game video, talk to friends who have the same interests as me,  try a trial if there is one, or get into a beta if it's early.  I like to decide for myself since no one knows better than me what I like and dislike.

I'm currently playing WoW while waiting for ESO to release.  I have been in four betas so far and love it.  Bought the CE just the other day.

I'm not an IT Specialist, Game Developer, or Clairvoyant in real life, but like others on here, I play one on the internet.

Thankfully there are non official forums which are not moderated by the gaming companies and where people can get accurate (which means positive and negative) information about games.

Playing now: Archeage, WoW, Landmark, GW2

Top 3 MMORPGs played: UO, AC1 and WoW

Honorable mentions: AO, LotRO and GW2.

If you don't want both positive and negative opinions then you shouldn't consult open access forums. People don't come here for positive brainwashing, that's what official forums are for.  They come here to see both sides of the argument so they can make an informed decision.

My advice? Take it all with a grain of salt.

OP   a few thoughts.

1) I don't expect to have conversations here.I say what I think and move on.I don't often check back to see what some think about my posts.I know what I'll likely find.I don't "watch" many of my posts.

2)You have to toughen up.There are got-chya people everywhere. It's what they do

3) Realize there are some helpful people here and ask questions if you have them .Many will help....some still ridicule.

4)How I think of the got-cha's. They have to live with themselves 24/7. Can there be a fate worse than that ?

5) It's  easy to get infected with gotc-ism and pile on... just stop a moment before you post.

It's funny how different perspectives can be. When *I* look at these forums I see large numbers of gullible fanboys, excited about the next mindless snoozefest where they'll get to play whack-a-quest for a good 30-50 or so hours before they can faceroll their way through uninspired, linear, 20-minute "group content".

You also see bitter old vets proclaiming the second coming of the Sandbox yet they refuse to play a lot of those games....

Neither opinion is useful.

nah .. i doubt these forums have any impact at all. And there is no bad publicity.

I doubt people on the internet is dumb enough to just blindly belief what is said here. More likely is that posts here generate some interests and people will check games out on their own.

That is also why controversy is good for business. If you have a so-so movie, piss off some groups and have them boycott you ... that will help business.

Every major game has one or more hangouts where you can participate in a circle jerk and bully all discontent and criticism out of the community.  Since what's being said here is hurting your feelings and making you doubt yourself, that's probably where you belong anyway.

In the grander scheme of things, needing the overwhelming validation of one's tastes or opinions from other people is not a healthy way to go about one's life.

Play what you want to play and stop telling people what they're allowed to say to make you feel good about yourself and your gaming choices/preferences.

If you let others decide what is right for you, then these forums are not the main problem.

Look, mmorpg.com and especially the forum posters are pretty much looked down upon outside of this website.  It is certainly not an important website as far as industry opinions go.  They tend to believe their opinion is something much more important than it is even those who think they are mearly giving feedback.

The man in my sig disagrees with you and he is the most respected developer in the business which is why he has been a key speaker at so many GDCs. <--that means Game Developers Conference.

I would wager that every single poster that posts negatively here starts out with a long detailed complaint only to see it ripped to pieces by those that cannot fathom any negative comments, or possible reasons for not like something, get attacked personally and then trolled until someone is banned. Then, from that point on, not bother with the details anymore because there is no point to it.

The amount of self-righteous gamers is too great, they are the most destructive force in gaming and are the reasons why so many developers rarely ever see the actual feedback they NEED to see. Not the buttkissing, but the reason WHY people are leaving their game, why it isn't selling, why its about to either fold or go F2P or why they are NOT a potential customer.

Games don't improve because of fanboys, fans or yes men. They improve from NEGATIVE feedback, everything from, Hey can we get some UI options because this layout is bad to please add some damn endgame content there aint enough crap to do with such a small amount of instances and daily quests.

Even that last remark, didn't need to give great detail, they can see that this person does not believe the amount of endgame content is enough. Did it provide any details as to what kind of content is needed? Yes, it actually did. It states there is not enough instances and dailies to keep him busy. YOU however may not think it provides anything but a rant though, because you are not a professional that works in the industry. And Raph Koster agrees. The worst are those that tell you that you are great.

"People who tell you you’re awesome are useless. No, dangerous.

They are worse than useless because you want to believe them. They will defend you against critiques that are valid. They will seduce you into believing you are done learning, or into thinking that your work is better than it actually is." ~Raph Koster

From your post it seems that you have a good expirience from alot of games you play, which can be because you have a better way of focusing on the positive in games and better at forgiving the negative parts. This is a good thing.... for you.. I am much like that myself. I love games, in all forms. If you throw a dice I ll start to giggle! So I get hooked to most games I play and if everyone was like you and me, there would be 1 really crappy and expensive game on the market that everyone would play and "enjoy"!? When I see negative posts on the forums avout games I like or looking forward to play I dont mind at all, aslong as its a genuin oppinion and not a just a "bash" or "rant". Of course there is alot of thst goin on aswell ( might even have ranted.myself some time, if not here then somewhere else), but those posts yyou just git to ignore. On a positive note I have really high hopes for EQn and will probably dive into EQl aswell at some point. Keeping an eye on ESO cause it seems like a blast. Currently playing EQ2 and actually took up MO aswell, as I swore I never would. :) (Phone text)

I would describe the internet mmo forums in general as a smoothie. You throw in 1 of every possible opinion on every possible subject in mmo's. Then have someone shit in it. Then throw it all over your house. Your left with a very honest representation of the human race.
