The reverse for me. Some bargains in there numerous sales but i find the client is bloatware!

Bloatware:

"(computing) Software that is overpacked with features and therefore slow or unwieldy; software that is inefficiently designed and occupies an excessive amount of memory or disk space."

Steam uses a fraction of my browser's RAM usage.

The amount of space it takes in the HDD is negligible.

If the news notifications are bothering you, you can turn that off.

How so is Steam bloatware?

I've never noticed any issues either, but everyone I know who "hates" steam always tells me the same thing.

I hated it at first as well, until I got into the sales and thanks to steam, I found a couple great games, Guns of Icarus, SolForge and The Wolf Among us just to name a few.

I absolutely love Steam and it is without a doubt the best thing that has happened in PC gaming for me personally in many years

have been using steam for years now, its even the first place i look when i am interested in a particular game, or where i browse for games. boxed games are something of a pain, i don't like having the disks anymore as they can get broken, and i hate having to search around trying to find them, and since storage space on hdd is so cheap, its easier, more convenient, not to have to use disks.

It's overpacked with features (do I need an overlay with what friends are doing when I'm playing games, no, do I need a store browser in my game launcher, no). It is inefficient too, (though of course that is debatable) I would argue that a loader itself should load in fractions of a second rather than seconds and should occupy maybe a few kilobytes rather than megabytes, it has no fancy graphics after all. Pretty much ticks all the boxes for bloatware, even though it only needs to tick one to qualify. As you might tell I don't really care for it though your mileage might differ!

I just like it for the convenience, plus they do have some really great sales sometimes for games that I would have not otherwise tried.  Account security is not really an issue.

I guess that's what it comes down to. So anything anyone might bring forth as arguments, you'll outright disagree with just for the sake of it.

The few things you mentioned are either optional / can be tweaked further / can't wrap my head around (size...).

meh... it comes in handy. I have no clue where I put that copy of Brink, but every time I open up the steam client it asks if I want to download it again.

I'm sure you're pretty proud of your bookcase or w/e filled with neat, categorized game boxes that actually have the games they came with inside of them. Wait until you move four or five more times, then come tell me about the joys of a physical copy. And store that shit on your hard drive? You'd be lucky if that's not erased within a week of getting bored with it.

Losing your steam account is about as likely as losing your bank account. It will only happen if you make extremely stupid decisions.

Guess shopping at Target or Sony or any number of other retailers that store data overseas, Steam included, is extremely stupid... It's not about ownership, it's about damage control. Come on, this ain't 1995 and being hacked isn't just about clicking on suspicious links anymore. Quit living in the dark ages.

And what happens if you decide to take a break from gaming when you go to college and after awhile decide darkslayer1337sauce or whatever you decided as a kid isn't an e-mail you'd like to keep giving out. A few years pass and things settle down. You download steam again, only to find the account is linked to an e-mail address you've long since stricken from your memory.

I'm sure there are steps you can take to recover game access, but the point is you shouldn't be classified as a moron for losing your account information. Shit happens, enjoy life more.

I like it and GoG. I like having my games in a place where I can download them again.

I don't have the original discs for pretty much any old game I've owned. So now I have them on GoG and Steam for as long as those services last.

I think a mind wipe so people could play an mmo like it was their first time again, would be easier to build than a new mmo people here would actually like. - DamonVile

I don't deny it makes things pretty easy and stuff like cloud saves (for steam works aware games at least) is neat if moving to your laptop. Having said that on the whole games install load and run pretty easily nowadays anyway. Don't know if you remember the DOS days and DOS/WIN95 days but it could be a massive pita getting stuff to run. I just wish you could strip it right back to core launcher functionality. Edit: btw I didn't disagree just for the sake of it I listed quantative reasons why it matches your definition of bloatware. Just serving adds makes it so.

Steam is fantastic, I've gotten some real gems during their sales, in fact their sales spoiled me and these days I refuse to pay more than $20 for a PC game, I don't care if it's brand new I'm not paying $60 for some game that's going to be $15 in a Steam sale in a few months.

I've become dependent upon spell check. My apologies for stupid grammatical errors.

2/02/14 7:30:19 PM#54

Yeah, having a source for the games I want to play at very discounted prices really is nice.  There are also a lot of indie games that I otherwise would never see.  Easy game installation is a nice plus too.  Steam really just works and does what it does very well.

For every large, complex problem, there is a simple, clear solution that also happens to be absolutely wrong.

I like it. I hated it at first though, and was suspicious of it. But I bought dozens of indy titles I simply can't buy on Amazon. I don't know of a way to get Magic 2014 on CDROM then get the expansions or DLC for that or other games. It is simply a lot more convienient and doesn't seem to effect the performance of my PC. I mean, you see a game you like the look of, download it and 10 minutes later you are playing it.

There are issues with the greenlight however. Games like Garry's Incident should never get greenlit and it's become a common occurence that substandard games that are nothing more than shovelware are appearing on the market.

I would much rather have the game installed right on my pc and have a separate login for it. I'd feel like I actually own it more than I would through a client like steam.

Ah, the good ol' hypothetical. At my last job we had hallways filled with filing cabinet's just crammed full of paperwork from the last decade to now. It was becoming a problem (as we had no more space to fit more cabinets and things just weren't fitting in the files anymore) so we had a meeting to come up with a solution. I said, "We don't need to keep hard copies because we already scan and store all these documents into our database, we also make a backup of all work done each month and save it to our shared drive which gets backed-up daily on the servers and stored in a secure facility." Their answer was thusly, "Yes, but what if there's a fire and we HAVE to get a file that same day and our database gets wiped or corrupted? Then how do we know what was done?"

I just looked at them like . . . wtf. Yes, and what if aliens land, take over the planet, and kick your dog?

Anyway, that little anecdote is meant to hopefully alleviate you of your ridiculous fear that you will lose the account and won't be able to recover it. There are many failsafes in place to verify your identity and to verify your order history - barring any extreme circumstances, it's not that easy to lose your account.

Don't take this to mean you should or have to use Steam, but that your hypothetical is silly.

Take my advice, I'm not using it anyway.

When Valve originally made the switch from the WON ID system to Steam, I was pretty annoyed by it, but after all this time I've become an avid supporter. They gave GFWL an ass whopping, made reaching the audience of computer gamers more accessible to an array of studios, and have continued to nurture the creativity of the community with open sourced modding tools and the Steam workshop. My only serious gripe is regards to being able to make more of my information private; I'd really prefer the option to set my online status to invisible when I wanted to stay under the radar, just as an example.

You can do that already.

As for liking Steam, it is one of the best things to ever happen to PC gaming.

I'm not a fan of monopolies.  When I can't get a legal copy of a game unless I use Steam I know they've gone to far.  I will never use a company that threatens to take away my right of purchase through other wholesalers.

They have good prices on games so I buy them there sometimes but when GMG offers an extra 25% off a game I want I never hesitate to buy there instead and also do prefer buying on GOG because you actually own the games you buy there. Being fanboys of particular stores is for idiots. Makes even less sense than being a fanboy of a product.

Heh.

I am a super-fan of some establishments because of service. You give good service, I come back. This has been lost in the day of the interwebs, since good service means my online cart works.

But I am old and some things are important to me.
