Everquest Next (and long before the hype -- kept up with it when it was quietly announced at the forums years ago).

I wanted EQII with a better game engine. EQII before the crappy Fighter 2.0 changes that turned the game into WoW-lite (tipping point for me on the final Fighter 2.0 changes was logging in 2 years later, and found my wisdom based Paladin turned into a strength primary stat fighter).

Probably Seed.  Don't get me wrong.  I loved that game...I loved it to death.  But it just got rolled out too soon...pushed out because of impatient investors and VCs... and there just wasn't enough support to fix everything in time.

Bioware plus StarWars!  What could go wrong?  The class stories were nice, and the music was excellent.  I did like huttball.  After that, the game just fell apart for me.  Bad engine.  Bad class balance.  Small zones.  More time spent at the loading screen than the game.  Quests were kill these three stationary mobs, followed by three more stationary mobs.   I knew Bioware was on shaky ground, but with SWTOR, the assimilation into EA was complete.

SWTOR...i still have nightmares...

I love PvP...but illum zone(pvp zone) was so broken to mechanics and engine dropped the ball there...lots of people had stupid FPS there.

Tons of people farmed pvp stuff abusing the system and bioware did nothing.

PvP Rewards Boxes? It was fucking random....

While the story was amazing...every zone was never felt like a mmo...horrible.

And a lot of dungeons had bugged bosses.

PvP Warzones pugs against people in party...sucked hard everytime.

My answer SHOULD be SWTOR, but guess what?  I actually did enjoy playing that game for the six months I was subscribed.  I had fun---sue me.  I am disappointed that it didn't hold me for a longer period of time, but oh well.

Saying all that, I would probably go with Rift.  I was super excited about the game after playing it in beta, thinking about all the endless possibilities in constructing a class from the soul system.  By level 30, I was bored stiff.  I had to muscle through those last 20 levels for no other reason than to say I did it.  One of the dullest leveling experiences I've ever had.

What was I thinking? I was blinded by the IP and fell for the slick talking of the hype videos, despite my inner voice warning me away.

It would have been an above average single player game. As an MMO, it's run of the mill.

Startrek  Online, when it first launched I was expecting the best use of the IP was sorely disappointed, but got to say popped back in after a break from season six and it's now a fun game maybe not long term but a good time waster all the same.

GW2 ,Jumped on the hype train at full tilt then realised the train was not that dynamic after all only Mo I have pre-ordered but never again.

Secret World,Thought the skill system would be a ground breaker turned out a tired rehash of the same old formula.

SWTOR,Had warnings from Beta testers saying how bad the game was but  stupidly thought all that money all that talent and the IP surely a top company like Bioware could not mess this up and we all know how this story ends not very happily.

Age of Conan, Warhammer Online, Darkall, SWTOR, and I'm already expecting TESO to be on the list.

I had the same experience with Age of Conan.  Tortage was awesome...

I played Warhammer 40k and Battlefleet Gothic with my friends for years.  I couldn't wait for Warhammer Online to come out.  And from the makers of DAOC, my favorite MMO??? How could that not be bad?  I think proceeded to get in game, make my squig herder and realized you can only ever "herd" one squig at a time.  I tried a bunch of classes, but I couldn't get into them.

I really wanted Darkfall to have the depth of AI of something like Oblivion at least.  There is NO AI outside of mobs in that game.  Very disappointing.

SWTOR? I liked the voice acting... I think what killed this game was the fact that my assassin had the same storyline as my friend's sorcerer.  I know it seems small, but it killed it.

As a huge fan of the Elder Scrolls series back since the early days of Morrowind, I can say that I don't have very high expectations for TESO.  If they actually pull of an "Elder Scrolls" game then I will play.  I know they are made by the guys who did DAOC, and I really like DAOC, but I like it for the diversity of classes.  Unless they bring that diversity to TESO, or if it actually lives up tot he Elder Scrolls legacy, I won't be playing and will be disappointed yet again.

What the hell happened?

Yeah, I'm with ya. I loved the original look/vision for Tabula Rasa. The game that was released was interesting, but didn't quite capture the same kind of awe or wonder the first version did.

Another game where the vision was just too grand. The original game had blood wars between races. Just look at this lineup. I was hoping to play and angel in that game. Its sad how the final game turned out.

Yep. The original vision for Horizons was amazing. Sad all the drama that happened with David Allen and the fallout from it. The game still came out to be pretty cool, and still has some great systems in place. But it's not nearly what it could/should have been - had it been a more realistic goal.

Then I left Tortage. Those of you who've played it, you know the rest.

So, what is your 'disaster' MMO?

It wasn't that the rest of the game was bad, just that Tortage was about as close to a SRPG quality in an MMO as the genre has ever seen and thus impossible to keep up with.

I have to disagree on this.

After leaving Tortage the textures were horrible and lazy.  Stats just didn't work at all, which again became more apparant the further you travelled.  The game was clearly unfinished and content dried up the further you went with bugs becoming more and more prevalent, Tortage being the only polished and complete part of the game that was largely devoid of bugs.

People at the time even commented that it had appeared Tortage had been so polished to give an unrealistic view of the entire game to reviewers and players alike.

The only thing AoC got really right at launch was the music, that was amazing.

FF14, 1st try and 2nd try. I always loved FF series from i.e. PS2, so my disappointment was terrible. If released 10, 15 years back they would be I guess acceptable. But not nowadays.

AOC.  I'm very tolerable of bad mmorpg, as long as it is playable.  AOC isn't playable.

That being said, at least I bother to play it.  I probably played 50 mmorpg where I played no more than 1 hour.

Do games that never get released count? Jumpgate was my first MMO, so I was really excited for JGE.

The Matrix Online - Come on... How on Earth did they botch it. The audience was there for the taking. But they built it with such a rubbish engine, it was so inflexible. The combat update at least made it workable but then, literally three months after launch they fired all but one guy who had to keep the game going. It got pathetic, seriously, they went from full cutscenes and special effect to basic black and white storyboards... It was a complete fiasco for what is effectively a decent budget game. The thing is, if they had gutted the game and carried on from the combat update it would have been a decent if not strong contender for an enjoyable game.

They did take some stupid design decisions though, a story that updated along with the game meant, if you missed the story that's it, you were out. New players would start with everyone else in chapter 5 and not at the start. A daft decision to be honest, that they updated a 'replay' system to allow you to play missions from chapter 1-4 in the end was telling, but doing the 'evolving' story crap was a surefire way to lose a lot of the player base.

Thing is... I wish MXO was back up and running. I loved it, despite it's stupid flaws. It's just execs, or idiot designers not thinking things through. And MXO is so unique... Not gonna see another game like it, or with that source material ever again, such a missed opportunity.

Star Trek Online

The game that was anything BUT star trek.

Should have been a single player game on my PS3/4/whatever. It's alright, but it certainly isn't a fantastic MMO to be honest. Mind you, I'm just chucking this one in there, I was never hyped for it.

Vanguard-Thsi game was so overhyped it wasnt funny...Supposed to be the successor to EQ and it just sucked....A technilogical disaster

The Secret World-Im not sure why I had hopes for this...They were saying in early beta that it had alot of AO's qualities, but once I got into beta that was far from the case.....Felt like it was the worst of Funcoms games

AoC-Wasnt as hyped about it as most, but it sure was a bad game

Star Trek Online-Was curious but it was dleted less than an hour after I loaded it...Just an awful game.

Wiardry Online-I'm a huge fan of the WIardry series, but this game was a disaster...So bad in fact that it is already being shut down

Guild wars 2 by far takes the cake for this, and continues to do so still to this day. GW2 is by large and by far probably one of the most initially well designed MMO's available to date whos potential as a game has been completely and utterly wasted and squandered by a dev team with no sense of direction or creativity. The beautiful graphics, unique gameplay style and realism of GW2 are drowned out by a complete lack of direction from Anet. This idea that a free to play game can survive on a 2 week to 1 month "living story" patch alone and not develop any other content in the game is utterly insane and it is driving the game into the ground. Massive problems with the lack of content in the game continue to be ignored by anet on a regular basis, and chris whitelines obsession with WvW knows no bounds. The forums are plagued with constant complaints about the direction of the game, and its funny because anet acts like they care about peoples opinions about the direction of the game with these CDI threads, thousands upon thousands of legitimately EXCELLENT suggestions on how to not only improve the game, but make it insanely profitable, and just when you think they are going to listen to what the people say, they throw it back in everyones faces with this living story bs. lol It is truely one of the most dissapointing MMO's ive ever played in my entire life, and I think the reason it is still popular and people are so passionate about it is because they see how badly the game is being ruined by anet.

It's a split for me. SWTOR and GW2. I find both games to be incredibly dull. The only redeeming quality I found for SWTOR was that it was Star Wars and as for GW2, the world and the races were wonderfully done. The redeeming qualities for both games can hardly be a saving grace for a whole game.

I can't log into either game and play for more than 20 minutes without falling asleep at the wheel. In some circumstances, quite literally falling asleep.

Age of Conan was hyped hard and they didnt tell me they hadnt bothered to finish it or that melee's were gimped by stamina and as a caster I could just run and if they ran after me they wouldnt be able to do anything because their stamina was gone and they would just melt.

Warhammer Online I love the IP it just wasnt as good as it should have been and they never bothered to fix things in it.

that said I still have memories of fun times in each of them
